Article Synopsis
  • PEComa is a rare type of tumor mainly found in gynecology, making diagnosis challenging for doctors.
  • Three cases of gynecological PEComas (in the uterus, vagina, and retroperitoneum) are discussed, highlighting their treatment and follow-up results.
  • There is little consensus on the best treatment options due to the rarity of these tumors, but surgical removal is standard, while new therapies like m-TOR inhibitors show promise for recurrent cases.

Article Synopsis
  • Despite advancements in perinatal care, infections from gram-negative bacteria still significantly contribute to neonatal health issues, particularly for premature and very low birth weight infants due to their weak immune systems and hospital-acquired infections.
  • This study examined the effects of betamethasone and tocolytic agents (indomethacin and fenoterol) on the immune systems of mothers and their newborns by assessing cytokine production after exposure to E. coli.
  • The results showed that betamethasone, both alone and with tocolytics, reduced cytokine production, indicating a suppression of the immune response, leading to potential harmful effects on neonates, suggesting that it should only be used in specific cases of preterm labor

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) latency is typically harmless but reactivation can be largely detrimental to immune compromised hosts. We modeled latency and reactivation using a traceable HCMV laboratory strain expressing the luciferase reporter gene (HCMV/GLuc) in order to interrogate the viral modulatory effects on the human adaptive immunity. Humanized mice with long-term (more than 17 weeks) steady human T and B cell immune reconstitutions were infected with HCMV/GLuc and 7 weeks later were further treated with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) to induce viral reactivations.

Background: The sensitivity of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancers to tamoxifen treatment varies considerably, and the molecular mechanisms affecting the response rates are manifold. The human epidermal growth factor receptor-related receptor HER2 is known to trigger intracellular signaling cascades that modulate the activity of coregulators of the estrogen receptor which, in turn, reduces the cell sensitivity to tamoxifen treatment. However, the impact of HER2-related receptor tyrosine kinases HER1, HER3, and, in particular, HER4 on endocrine treatment is largely unknown.

The main advancement in the surgical treatment of early cervical cancer has been a de-escalation in the radical surgical approach of early stage disease. Similarly, sentinel lymph node detection with cervical tracer injection can be performed alone in microscopic tumors (stage IA) while additional lymphadenectomy is still performed in macroscopic tumors (IB1 and IIA). Parametrial resection has been progressively reduced in tumors less than 2 cm, and simple procedures, conservative (trachelectomy) or not (simple hysterectomy), are currently being evaluated in several phase III trials.

Development of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is very rare in a spontaneous ovulatory cycle and it is usually seen during pregnancy. In the etiology of OHSS, higher hCG (molar pregnancies or multiple pregnancies) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels have been accused. In recent years, some follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) receptor (FSHR) gene mutations have been described in patients with OHSS in the first trimester with normal hCG levels.

Dietary phytochemicals in breast cancer research: anticancer effects and potential utility for effective chemoprevention.

Environ Health Prev Med

August 2018

Department of Medical Biology, Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Bratislava, Malá Hora 4, 036 01, Martin, Slovak Republic.

Cancerous tissue transformation developing usually over years or even decades of life is a highly complex process involving strong stressors damaging DNA, chronic inflammation, comprehensive interaction between relevant molecular pathways, and cellular cross-talk within the neighboring tissues. Only the minor part of all cancer cases are caused by inborn predisposition; the absolute majority carry a sporadic character based on modifiable risk factors which play a central role in cancer prevention. Amongst most promising candidates for dietary supplements are bioactive phytochemicals demonstrating strong anticancer effects.
