It is generally accepted that activity of K channels maintain resting membrane potential and uterine quiescence during pregnancy, which is, at least in part, mediated by down-regulation of ATP-sensitive K (K) channels. Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) is associated with pre-term and late pre-term labour. Here, we have used real time RT-PCR to compare mRNA levels of K channel subunits in PIH parturient and control parturient.

Endometriosis is a benign gynecological disease which symptoms can provide a severe impact on patient's quality of life with subsequent impact on psychological well-being. Different therapeutic strategies are available to treat this disease, such as surgery, hormonal therapies, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Nevertheless, the efficacy of conventional medical treatments is limited or intermittent in most of the patients due to the associated side effects.

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are the causative agents of carcinoma of the uterine cervix. A number of HPV genotypes have been associated with cervical cancer and almost all tumors associated with HPV show strong p16 expression. However, there is little information on the possible impact of the HPV genotype and p16 immunostaining on the clinicopathological features or their prognostic value in cervical carcinoma.

Widespread adoption of primary human papillomavirus (HPV)-based screening has encouraged the search for a triage test which retains high sensitivity for the detection of cervical cancer and precancer, but increases specificity to avoid overtreatment. Methylation analysis of FAM19A4 and miR124-2 genes has shown promise for the triage of high-risk (hr) HPV-positive women. In our study, we assessed the consistency of FAM19A4/miR124-2 methylation analysis in the detection of cervical cancer in a series of 519 invasive cervical carcinomas (n = 314 cervical scrapes, n = 205 tissue specimens) from over 25 countries, using a quantitative methylation-specific PCR (qMSP)-based assay (QIAsure Methylation Test®).

Endometriosis represents nowadays a real burden for the patients as well as for the physicians, as it requires surgical and/or medical treatment, often long - termed and repeated. Moreover, the high costs necessary to diagnose and treat endometriosis represent a real economic burden, being comparable to other chronic diseases like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, the physicians dealing with this disease should take into account not only the efficacy of the treatment, but also the economic aspects and patients compliance.

The aetiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) remains uncertain and thus dedicated studies are still of much importance. Patients in this group are at high risk for metabolic syndrome, diabetes and ischemic heart disease. Our goal was to use a dietary intervention, facilitating the regression of the disease, through the observation of lipid and hormonal profiles, carbohydrate metabolic parameters and metabolomics of plasma fatty acids.

Introduction: Approximately 21% of Germany's inhabitants have been born abroad or are of direct descent of immigrants. A positive birth experience has an effect on a woman's mental health and her future family planning choices. While international studies showed that immigrant women are less satisfied with their birth experience, no such study has been conducted in Germany until now.

: Dysregulation of TGF-β signaling plays multiple roles in cancer development and progression. In the canonical TGF-β pathway, TGF-β regulates the expression of hundreds of target genes via interaction with Smads, signal transducers and transcriptional modulators. We evaluated the association of TGF-β1, Smad2, and Smad4, the key components of canonical TGFβ pathway, with clinicopathologic characteristics of urothelial bladder cancer, and assessed their prognostic value in prediction of patients' outcome.

- Premature infants are susceptible to oxidative stress that causes neonatal disease such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the production of pro-oxidants and the ability of the body to detoxify their harmful effects by antioxidants. The proliferative phase 2 ROP occurs at around 33 postmenstrual week (pmw).

Background: Allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a common procedure in hematological disorders and is preceded by a conditioning regimen that usually includes busulfan. The immunosuppression caused by the conditioning regimen and graft-versus-host disease prophylaxis is associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) persistence and, consequently, with an increased risk of cervical cancer (CC) and squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs)-the precursors of CC. A gynecological check-up that includes CC screening is recommended in these patients.

Background: Squamous intraepithelial lesions/cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (SIL/CIN) are high-risk human papilloma virus (hrHPV)-related lesions which are considered as high grade (HSIL/CIN2-3) or low grade (LSIL/CIN1) lesions according to their risk of progression to cervical cancer (CC). Most HSIL/CIN2-3 are considered as transforming hrHPV infections, so truly CC precursors, although some clear spontaneously. hrHPV testing has a high sensitivity for the detection of HSIL/CIN2-3 but a relatively low specificity for identifying transforming lesions.

Protein expression/activity of antioxidative defense enzymes (AD) in seminal plasma of fertile men might be used as biomarkers of male fertility status. To test this concept, the present study examined the semen parameters of males among 14 normal idiopathic (normozoospermia) and 84 subnormal (teratozoospermia, oligoteratozoospermia, oligoasthenoteratozoospermia) infertile individuals\. We investigated levels of protein expression/activity of Cu, Zn superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD), manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), their association with functional sperm parameters, as well as their potential to serve as biomarkers of specific sperm pathologies.
