Research Institute of the University of Bucharest, Department of Botany-Microbiology, Faculty of Biology, University of Bucharest, 050663 Bucharest, Romania.

The pathogenesis of chronic wounds (CW) involves a multifaceted interplay of biochemical, immunological, hematological, and microbiological interactions. Biofilm development is a significant virulence trait which enhances microbial survival and pathogenicity and has various implications on the development and management of CW. Biofilms induce a prolonged suboptimal inflammation in the wound microenvironment, associated with delayed healing.

  • - Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) and pleomorphic dermal sarcoma (PDS) are rare tumors that require careful differentiation, as PDS can spread while AFX does not infiltrate beyond the dermis.
  • - A study involving 13 patients found that preoperative sonography accurately distinguished between AFX and PDS in all cases, even changing the diagnosis in 3 patients, which was confirmed post-surgery.
  • - Using ultrasound can enhance the clinical diagnosis, speed up treatment, and improve patient care, as AFX can be treated with micrographic surgery while PDS requires more extensive surgical approaches and lymph node evaluation.

Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: a GRADE approach for evidence evaluation and recommendations by the Italian Association of Medical Oncology.

ESMO Open

May 2024

Oncologia Medica 2, IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino, Genova; Department of Surgical Sciences and Integrated Diagnostics (DISC), Plastic Surgery Division, University of Genova, Genoa, Italy. Electronic address:

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) accounts for ∼20%-25% of all skin tumors. Its precise incidence is often challenging to determine due to limited statistics and its incorporation with mucosal forms. While most cases have a favorable prognosis, challenges arise in patients presenting with locally advanced or metastatic forms, mainly appearing in immunocompromised patients, solid organ transplantation recipients, or those facing social difficulties.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies have explored the link between human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) in the development of pityriasis rosea (PR), yielding inconsistent findings due to varying sample types and techniques used.
  • In this study, researchers tested tissue and plasma samples from 25 PR patients for HHV-6 and HHV-7 using advanced molecular and serological methods, finding a significant prevalence of HHV-6 and HHV-7 in the samples.
  • The results suggest that both HHV-6 and HHV-7 may play a role in PR, recommending the simultaneous collection of diverse biological samples and the use of quantitative real-time PCR for clearer

Ultrasound and high-frequency ultrasound assessment of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer in the pre-therapeutical setting is becoming increasingly popular in the field of dermatosurgery and dermatooncology, as it can provide clinicians with relevant, "in vivo" parameters regarding tumor lateral and depth extension as well as potential locoregional spread, cancelling the need of more extensive imaging methods and avoiding a delay in diagnosis. Furthermore, preoperative sonography and color Doppler can aid in orienting the clinical diagnosis, being able in numerous situations to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions, which require a different therapeutic approach. This preoperative knowledge is of paramount importance for planning an individualized treatment regimen.

Infectious and inflammatory dermatoses featuring skin lesions with loss of tissue expose skin layers to microbial invasions, disrupt the normal skin microbiome, and potentially lead to sepsis. However, literature data on the incidence of cutaneous-onset sepsis are scarce. This retrospective observational study assessed hospital admissions for primary skin lesions without bacterial infections and sepsis during 2020-2022 in the largest emergency hospital in NE Romania.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the characteristics and dermatoscopic features of cutaneous metastases (CMs) from various primary tumors, highlighting the challenge of diagnosing them.
  • A total of 583 patients were analyzed, with melanomas being the most common primary tumors, and a significant portion of the metastases was found in the head and neck region.
  • The findings suggest that pigmented melanoma metastases often appear as structureless blue lesions, while amelanotic metastases display linear serpentine vessels; both types can be confused with other skin lesions.
