Objective: This prospective, randomized study aimed to compare anterior suprascapular nerve block versus interscalene block in terms of diaphragm paralysis in arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
Methods: Fifty-two patients undergoing shoulder arthroscopy surgery were prospectively randomly assigned to interscalene block (n=25) or anterior suprascapular nerve block groups (n=27) (each group receiving 5 mL, 0.5% bupivacaine).

Over the last decades, individualized approaches and a better understanding of coagulopathy complexity in end-stage liver disease (ESLD) patients has evolved. The risk of both thrombosis and bleeding during minimally invasive interventions or surgery is associated with a worse outcome in this patient population. Despite deranged quantitative and qualitative coagulation laboratory parameters, prophylactic coagulation management is unnecessary for patients who do not bleed.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent joint disease and one of the leading causes of disability, poor physical activity levels (PAL), and quality of life (Qol) of elderly people worldwide. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the superiority of a novel group-based physical therapy (GBPT) intervention compared to a more traditional one-to-one individual physical therapy (IPT) among elderly Bulgarian subjects underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA). One hundred and thirty elderly TKA recipients of both genders with mean age=72.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic demanded exceptional physical and mental effort from healthcare workers worldwide. Since healthcare workers often refrain from seeking professional psychological support, internet-delivered interventions could serve as a viable alternative option.
Objective: We aimed to investigate the effects of a therapist-guided six-week CBT-based internet-delivered stress recovery intervention among medical nurses using a randomized controlled trial design.
Objective: Dexamethasone could be an effective prophylactic agent for the prevention of pain flares after palliative radiotherapy (RT) for uncomplicated bone metastases. To date, there are no data on its prophylactic coanalgesic (opioid-sparing) effect after RT in patients with complicated bone metastases compared to uncomplicated ones, which is the aim of our study.
Methods: Twenty-nine American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) III-IV patients, aged ≥18, treated with single-fraction 8 Gy/1 or multi-fraction 20 Gy/5 RT for painful uncomplicated bone metastases (steroid naïve patients, = 14) or complicated ones (steroid non-naïve patients, = 15), were examined retrospectively.

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) induces complex systemic hemostatic alterations associated with secondary brain damage and death. We specifically investigated perioperative changes of hemostasis in patients with isolated TBI undergoing major neurosurgery and searched for their influence on outcome.
Methods: Serial analysis (four time points, T0-T3) of conventional coagulation assay and rotational thromboelastometry data acquired during 72 h from admission of 68 patients who underwent craniotomy to remove hematoma and/or to decompress the brain was performed.

BACKGROUNDResults of many randomized trials on COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) have been reported, but information on long-term outcome after CCP treatment is limited. The objectives of this extended observation of the randomized CAPSID trial are to assess long-term outcome and disease burden in patients initially treated with or without CCP.METHODSOf 105 randomized patients, 50 participated in the extended observation.

Complex immune response to infection has been highlighted, more than ever, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This review explores the immunomodulatory treatment of moderate-to-severe forms of this viral sepsis in the context of specific immunopathogenesis. Our objective is to analyze in detail the existing strategies for the use of immunomodulators in COVID-19.

Objectives: We aim to investigate the utility of middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity (MCA PSV) Doppler in determining the perinatal mortality and morbidity in serial Doppler measurements from the time of diagnosis to the delivery of complicated cases with fetal growth restriction (FGR).
Methods: At 24-38 weeks of gestation, 65 pregnant women diagnosed with FGR were included in the study. The fetal biometry measurements, MCA pulsatility index (PI), and MCA PSV Doppler evaluation of the cases formed at the diagnosis and the delivery were recorded.

Objective: Many methods are used in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which causes acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and there are conflicting reports in the literature regarding the results of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy, which is one of those methods. The aim of our study is to evaluate the effect of MSC treatment applied together with standard treatments on survival.
Materials And Methods: This retrospective case-control study evaluates the survival effect of MSC treatment administered to patients treated in intensive care after the development of ARDS due to COVID-19 between March 2020 and March 2021.

There have been several attempts to quantify the diagnostic distortion caused by algorithms that perform low-dimensional electrocardiogram (ECG) representation. However, there is no universally accepted quantitative measure that allows the diagnostic distortion arising from denoising, compression, and ECG beat representation algorithms to be determined. Hence, the main objective of this work was to develop a framework to enable biomedical engineers to efficiently and reliably assess diagnostic distortion resulting from ECG processing algorithms.

Radiofrequency denervation of the zygapophysial (facet) joints is a frequently performed procedure for chronic low back pain. However, cryoablation represents a novel therapeutic approach for this condition. We observed and analyzed 3 cases with confirmed positive lumbar facet joint syndrome.

Damage to hippocampus, cerebellum, and cortex associated with cognitive functions due to anesthetic-induced toxicity early in life may cause cognitive decline later. Aquaporin 4 (AQP4), a key protein in waste clearance pathway of brain, is involved in synaptic plasticity and neurocognition. We investigated the effects of single and repeated isoflurane (Iso) anesthesia on AQP4 levels and brain damage.

The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to threaten the lives of millions of people. Viral shedding through the respiratory tract is the main risk factor for the transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome-2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus from sick individuals to healthy individuals. In this study, we aimed to investigate the viral clearance (VC) time in PCR tests of COVID-19 patients and the possible factors affecting this time.

Purpose: The aim of the study comprised the anatomical and functional assessment of the optic nerves and macular ganglion cells in the population of patients with unilateral wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD) and comparison of its results to those obtained from the fellow eye with non-advanced dry age-related macular degeneration (dAMD). Furthermore, we aimed to determine if the number of administered injections contributed to the potential differences between the examined eyes.
Methods: The study was based on 104 eyes of 52 patients in a cross-sectional study.

Background: In our institution, a modified WHO surgical safety checklist was implemented more than ten years ago. In retrospect, we noticed that pediatric anesthesia was underrepresented in our surgical safety checklist modification. Therefore, we added a standardized team briefing (pedSOAP-M) immediately before induction of anesthesia and hypothesized that the use of this checklist was effective to detect relevant errors with potentially harmful consequences.

We report the case of a single 46-year-old woman presenting with huge uterine fibroids growing for the last 12 years, resulting in a recent common iliac vein thrombosis. Due to the high risk for pulmonary embolism, an occluding balloon was inserted through the right jugular vein before the abdominal incision and occluded the vena cava just inferior to the renal veins. The tumor was easily mobilized, and the vena cava bifurcation was exposed and controlled until the uterus with the masses was resected.

Background: Surgery around the ankle is increasingly embedded in outpatient treatment concepts. Unfortunately, the classic "ankle block" as a concept of regional anesthesia is inappropriate for surgery around the ankle because the injection sites are too distal to block this specific region.
Methods: The "high ankle block" avoids this disadvantage by dislocating the injection points 15 cm proximal to the malleoli.
