Purpose: The aim of the retrospective, single-center study was to assess the prognostic value of immune cell-based and albumin-based ratios regarding lethal outcome in critically ill COVID-19 patients.
Patients And Methods: We analyzed 612 adult critically ill COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) between April 2020 and November 2022. Blood measurement on admission to the ICU encompassed complete blood count (CBC), IL-6, C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin, lactate, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), serum bicarbonate, arterial base deficit/excess (BD/E), and D-dimer.

Introduction: Sedation is often required during flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FFB) to ensure patient comfort and the success of the procedure. The choice of sedative agents may differ between anesthesiologists and pulmonologists. This pilot study aimed to investigate the current pre-procedure preparation, monitoring, premedication and sedation practices for FFB in Türkiye, focusing on the preferences and practices of pulmonologists.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) incidence after neurosurgical operations has been reported as 10-14%. The literature regarding the incidence of nosocomial acute kidney disease (AKD) following neurosurgery is scarce. This retrospective, single-center, observational study aimed to assess the impact of different anaesthetics on development of postoperative AKI and persistent AKD in neurosurgical patients.

Background: In the PROTECTION trial, intravenous amino acids (AA) decreased the occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in cardiac surgery patients with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Recruitment of renal functional reserve may be responsible for such protection. However, patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have diminished renal functional reserve, and AA may be less protective in such patients.

Resistance to the effects of rocuronium and other neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBA) has been previously reported, including delayed onset of relaxation, rapid recovery and incomplete paralysis under recommended doses. These conditions have been associated with denervation injury, burns, immobilisation, infections, metabolic disorders, and drug interactions. In this report, we describe the case of a young male without any known pre-disposing factor for NMBA resistance, who failed to attain muscle relaxation with non-depolarising NMBA despite high doses of rocuronium and atracurium during two surgeries for colorectal cancer, several months apart.

Background: The Abdominal Compartment Society (WSACS) established consensus definitions and recommendations for the management of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) in 2006, and they were last updated in 2013. The WSACS conducted an international survey between 2022 and 2023 to seek the agreement of healthcare practitioners (HCPs) worldwide on current and new candidate statements that may be used for future guidelines.
Methods: A self-administered, online cross-sectional survey was conducted under the auspices of the WSACS to assess the level of agreement among HCPs over current and new candidate statements.

Background: The analgesia after lower third molar alveolectomy is based on the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that have significant risks, and are contraindicated in the third trimester of pregnancy. Aiming to reduce NSAIDs use after this surgery, we quantified analgesic effects of ultrasound (US)-guided extraoral mandibular nerve block.
Methods: Thirty-six patients were equally allocated to the experimental or control group, based on their willingness to receive experimental US-guided extraoral mandibular nerve block for postoperative analgesia.

General anesthetics exposure, particularly prolonged or repeated exposure, is a crucial cause of neurological injuries. Notably, isoflurane (ISO), used in pediatric anesthesia practice, is toxic to the developing brain. The relatively weak antioxidant system at early ages needs antioxidant support to protect the brain against anesthesia.

Very small intracranial aneurysms, generally considered to be those 3 mm in diameter or smaller, pose particular technical challenges for endovascular surgeons. For this reason, very small aneurysms have been excluded from many relevant studies. The aim of our research was to establish the risk factors for the occurrence of stroke complications after endovascular embolization of ruptured and unruptured small intracranial aneurysms.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious and common complication of cardiac surgery, for which reduced kidney perfusion is a key contributing factor. Intravenous amino acids increase kidney perfusion and recruit renal functional reserve. However, the efficacy of amino acids in reducing the occurrence of AKI after cardiac surgery is uncertain.
