Introduction: Surgical fixation of displaced midshaft clavicle fractures is predominantly achieved with intramedullary (IM) or plate fixation. Both techniques have potential pitfalls: plate fixation involves greater periosteal stripping and protuberance of the implant, whereas IM fixation may be associated with implant-related complications, such as migration or skin irritation, which may lead to further surgery for implant removal. The aim of this study was to compare these two methods in simple (Robinson 2b.

Introduction: Surgery is supposed to modulate the production of carbon monoxide by the reduction of heme oxygenase activity or transcriptional regulation of inducible heme oxygenase. On the other hand, the inhalation of tobacco smoke can substantially raise the level of carboxyhemoglobin in the blood. Furthermore, methemoglobin is maintained at a constant level.

Introduction: Modern total hip arthroplasty is largely dependent on the successful preservation of hip geometry. Thus, a successful implementation of the preoperative planning is of great importance. The present study evaluates the accuracy of anatomic hip reconstruction predicted by 2D digital planning using a calcar-guided short stem of the newest generation.

In the assessment of hand and upper limb function, detecting sincerity of effort (SOE) for grip strength is of major importance to identifying feigned loss of strength. Measuring maximal grip strength with a dynamometer is very common, often combined with calculating the coefficient of variation (CV), a measure of the variation over the three grip strength trials. Little data is available about the relevance of these measurements in patients with median nerve impairment due to the heterogeneity of patient groups.

Introduction: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is known to be a common complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA). The minimal invasive (MIS) modified anterolateral approach has become popular in combination with a short stem. We analysed the incidence of HO following short-stem THA using this approach in combination with a postoperative administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

The presence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a significant complication of cirrhosis because it changes the prognosis and the treatment of the patients. By now, contrast-enhanced CT and MR scans are the most reliable tools for the diagnosis of HCC; however, in some cases, a biopsy of the tumor is necessary for the final diagnosis. The aim of the study was to develop a diagnostic tool using the microRNA (miRNA) profiles of the tissue surrounding the HCC tumor combined with clinical parameters in statistical models.

Background: Although autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) has been established as a standard treatment for large full-thickness cartilage defects, the effect of different doses of autologous chondrocyte products on structural outcomes has never been examined.
Hypothesis: In ACI, the dose level may have an influence on medium-term magnetic resonance morphological findings after treatment.
Study Design: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1.

Introduction: In recent years a variety of short-stems have been introduced. Stable osteointegration is a key factor for a satisfactory long-term result. The purpose of this study was to evaluate postoperative radiological alterations and subsidence, as a result of using a newly developed device, over a 2-year follow-up.

Introduction: Injuries to the acromioclavicular (AC) joint are common in sports participants and may lead to instability or degenerative changes that require surgical intervention. Diagnostics include X-ray projections; MRI could also be a useful method. Surgical treatment of acute Rockwood type III AC dislocation varies on a case-by-case basis and includes coracoclavicular (CC) stabilisation with two techniques of minimal invasive fixation: the Bosworth screw and AC TightRope fixation (Arthrex, US).

The aim of this prospective, randomised study was to measure and evaluate regional bone mineral changes and clinical results following the use of cemented and cementless hemiarthroplasty (HA) for treatment of femoral neck fracture in elderly patients. The study comprised 60 patients, 30 with cemented HA (group A) and 30 with cementless HA (group B). All patients underwent osteodensitometry of the contralateral hip, lumbar spine and bilateral distal femur.

Introduction: Distal tibial or pilon fractures are usually the result of combined compressive and shear forces, and may result in instability of the metaphysis, with or without articular depression, and injury to the soft tissue. The complexity of injury, lack of muscle cover and poor vascularity make these fractures difficult to treat. Surgical treatment of distal tibial fractures includes several options: external fixation, IM nailing, ORIF and minimally-invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO).

Introduction: Acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocations usually occur in a young active population as a result of a fall on the shoulder. Rockwood divided these dislocations into six types. Optimal treatment is still a matter of discussion.

The purpose of this study was to compare imaging modalities in the diagnosis of occult radial head and neck fractures and to assess the diagnostic value of ultrasound in diagnosing occult fractures of the radial head and neck. The study included 193 patients (101 male, 92 female) who were referred by trauma surgeons from January 2011 to July 2014 and presented with history of acute elbow trauma. The mean age of the patients was 37 years (range 15-82 years); 95 right and 98 left elbows were included in the study.

Introduction: Comminution of the patellar apex is amenable to internal fixation by standard techniques and usually requires partial patellectomy. In our institution, multifragmentary fractures of the distal pole are treated with the basket plate, which is shaped to fit the geometry of the patellar apex. This implant has been used in our institution for over 25 years.

Background: Very little information on medium- to long-term results is available for surgically treated proximal humeral fractures. The aim of this prospective treatment study was to present long-term results after angular stable plate fixation of displaced proximal humeral fractures and to detect which specific patient- and fracture-related parameters affect the clinical outcome.
Methods: We performed a prospective clinical and radiologic evaluation of 77 patients with a displaced proximal humeral fracture (28 Neer 2-part, 38 3-part, and 11 4-part fractures; 28 AO A fractures, 30 AO B fractures, and 19 AO C fractures) treated with angular stable plate fixation after a mean follow-up period of 96 months (range, 74-133 months).

The aims of this study were to evaluate the discernibility of the LIR (lateral intercondylar ridge) and the LBR (lateral bifurcate ridge) and show their reliability in femoral tunnel placement in ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction. Additionally, their position to the femoral axis, their course, and the ACL footprint were analyzed. For this study, 235 human femora were evaluated.

Purpose: Proximal humeral fractures are common and frequently associated with osteoporosis. Little is known about the association between the patho-anatomical fracture pattern of proximal humeral fractures and patient characteristics. The purpose of this six year longitudinal registry analysis of proximal humeral fractures was to study overall numbers, certain predefined pathoanatomical patterns and distribution compared with specific patient characteristics.

The aim of this study was to analyze the association between chronic low back pain (LBP) in chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with quality and intensity of pain experience. A total of 406 war veterans from 1991-1995 war in Croatia participated in this study. They were divided into four groups, according to psychiatric interview, psychometric testing and the presence of LBP verified by the imaging of lumbar area, into: (i) war veterans suffering from PTSD and LBP (N = 102), (ii) war veterans suffering from PTSD only (N = 108), (iii) war veterans suffering from LBP only (N = 99) and (iv) healthy controls (N = 97).
