Unlabelled: Despite the general success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA), addressing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) and the resulting long-term complications is a growing medical need given the aging population and the increasing demand for arthroplasty. A larger proportion of patients face revision surgery because of the long-term complication of aseptic loosening despite clearance of the infection. The pathomechanisms leading to prosthetic loosening are not understood as it has been widely assumed that the bone stock recovers after explantation revision surgery.

Background: Injuries of the long head of the biceps (LHB) tendon are a prevalent source of anterior shoulder pain and are commonly treated with tenodesis. Not only a stable fixation of the LHB but also anatomic restoration of the length-tension relationship plays a central role in providing satisfactory functional and cosmetic outcomes, especially in young patients. We report the clinical outcomes of 2 different subpectoral tenodesis techniques using unicortical button fixation.

The established standard to ensure state-of-the-art cancer treatment is through multidisciplinary tumor boards (TBs), although resource- and time-intensive. In this validation study, the multiple myeloma (MM)-TB was reexamined, aiming to validate our previous (2012-2014) results, now using the TB data from March 2020 to February 2021. We assessed MM-TB protocols, physicians' documentation, patient, disease, remission status, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) as left-truncated survival times.

Background: Antibiotic-loaded polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement spacers provide high local antibiotic concentrations and patient mobility during the interim period of two-stage revision for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). This study compares mechanical characteristics of six dual antibiotic-loaded bone cement (dALBC) preparations made from three different PMMA bone cements. The study`s main objective was to determine the effect of time and antibiotic concentration on mechanical strength of dALBCs frequently used for spacer fabrication in the setting of two-stage revision for PJI.

The treatment of non-unions is often complicated by segmental bone defects and bacterial colonization. Because of the limited availability of autologous bone grafts, tissue engineering focuses on antibiotic-loaded bone graft substitutes. HACaS+G is a resorbable calcium sulphate-hydroxyapatite loaded with gentamicin.

Emerging evidence indicates that regulatory T cells (Treg) intervene in the inflammatory processes that drive osteoarthritis (OA). However, whether polarized Tregs affect clinical features of the disease in the short- or long-term, and if so, what their role in OA-related pain and functional disability really is, remains elusive. Thus, the aim of the current study was to characterize the infiltration profile of Tregs in systemic (peripheral blood) and joint-derived (synovial fluid and synovial membrane) samples from patients with knee OA in relation to OA-induced symptoms.

Local treatment of bone loss with an injection of a resorbable, calcium-based implant material to replace bone has a long history of clinical use. The in vivo discrimination of changes in bone versus implant is challenging with standard computed tomography (CT). However, spectral-CT techniques enable the separation between tissues of similar densities but different chemical compositions.

A major complication of hemophilia A therapy is the development of alloantibodies (inhibitors) that neutralize intravenously administered coagulation factor VIII (FVIII). Immune tolerance induction therapy (ITI) by repetitive FVIII injection can eradicate inhibitors, and thereby reduce morbidity and treatment costs. However, ITI success is difficult to predict and the underlying immunological mechanisms are unknown.

Purpose: When revising acetabular cups, it is often necessary to provide additional stabilisation with screws. In extensive defect situations, the placement of screws caudally in the ischium and/or pubis is biomechanically advantageous. Especially after multiple revision operations, the surgeon is confronted with a reduced bone stock and unclear or altered anatomy.

Purpose: Numerous approaches to the management of juvenile and aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are described in the specialist literature together with discussion of the associated healing and recurrence rates. Since there is currently no evidence-based treatment standard for these conditions, the aim of this systematic literature review with meta-analysis was to examine the different management approaches, evaluate the corresponding clinical outcomes and, as appropriate, to formulate a valid treatment recommendation.
Methods: A systematic search on OVID Medline based on a pre-existing search strategy returned 1333 publications.

Background: There are detailed findings on hip and knee joint parameters determined via functional calibration methods for use in instrumented 3D-gait analysis but these methods have not yet been addressed to the foot.
Research Question: Are functional calibration methods feasible for determining foot joint parameters and may they help for clinical interpretation of foot deformities?
Methods: Rigid segments were formed by markers on forefoot and hindfoot via a least square method. The position of the midfoot joint articulating both foot segments was then determined via a functional calibration motion.

Background: In total hip replacement, wear and corrosion arising from modular taper connections have increasingly become a serious clinical concern. Previous studies led to confounding results regarding the role of specific taper design features, likely due to the application of different analytical approaches. Accordingly, this study has two major objectives: first, to evaluate different analytical approaches to evaluate the fretting-corrosion behavior; and secondly to determine the effect of four specific design variables: the taper engagement situation, the stem taper length and surface topography in terms of roughness and contact ratio.

Current diagnostic standards for PJI rely on inflammatory markers that are typically elevated in autoimmune diseases, thus making the diagnosis of PJI in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and joint replacement particularly complicated. There is a paucity of data on differentiating PJI from rheumatoid arthritis in patients with previous arthroplasty. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the cases of 17 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 121 patients without rheumatoid disease who underwent surgical intervention due to microbiology-positive PJI of the hip or knee joint.
