In differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients, the response to initial treatments is evaluated 6-12 months after radioiodine therapy (RIT) according to the 2015 American Thyroid Association (2015 ATA) criteria. In selected patients, diagnostic 131-radioiodine whole-body scintigraphy (Dx-WBS) is recommended. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of I-Dx-WBS-SPECT/CT imaging in detecting incomplete structural responses in the early follow-up of DTC patients and, additionally, derived optimized basal-Tg value as a yardstick for scintigraphic imaging.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the role of circulating miRNAs as a biomarker of the persistence of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) in patients with an "uninformative" thyroglobulin (Tg) measurement.
Methods: We prospectively enrolled 49 consecutive PTC patients with Tg-positive antibodies (TgAb) who had undergone a (near)-total thyroidectomy and I therapy (RIT). The serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), Tg, and TgAb levels were measured before and at 6 and 12 months after RIT, respectively.

Background: Early identification of cervical lymph node (LN) metastases cervical lymph node metastases (CLNM) is crucial in the management of differentiated thyroid cancer differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) as it influences the indication and the extent of surgery with an impact on the recurrence risk and overall survival. The present review focused on novel sensitive and specific diagnostic techniques, by searching through online databases like MEDLINE and Scopus up to February 2022.
Areas Covered: The techniques identified included contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), dosage of fragment 21-1 of cytokeratin 19 (CYFRA 21-1) in lymph node fine needle aspiration washout, sentinel LN biopsy (SNB), and artificial intelligence (AI) - deep learning applied to ultrasonography and computed tomography.

Methods: We observed three patients who developed/exacerbated autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) shortly after receiving mRNA-based vaccines against SARS-CoV2.

Methods: Exploratory analysis used existing TSH and FT4 measurements taken at EOC during routine clinical practice (February 2018-April 2020) using Elecsys® TSH and Elecsys FT4 III immunoassays on cobas® 6000 and cobas 8000 analyzers (Roche Diagnostics).

Nuclear thyroidology has adopted changes and predicated on a careful risk-benefit analysis, in order to prevent a potential spread of the virus while being at the same time effective, safe and preserving their quality of essential services. Since most thyroid nodules (TNs) are benign, and malignant neoplasms are characterized by an indolent natural history, it is generally safe to delay diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

The role of radioiodine therapy (RIT) (used as ablation therapy or adjuvant therapy) following total thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) changed. Major revisions of the American Thyroid Association (ATA) Guidelines in 2015 resulted in significant differences in treatment recommendations in comparison to the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) 2008 guidelines. Recently, we presented the effects on daily practice for RIT among Swiss Nuclear Medicine centres.

Introduction: Nuclear medicine parathyroid imaging is important in the identification of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands in primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT), but it may be also valuable before surgical treatment in secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT). Parathyroid radionuclide imaging with scintigraphy or positron emission tomography (PET) is a highly sensitive procedure for the assessment of the presence and number of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands, located either at typical sites or ectopically. The treatment of pHPT is mostly directed toward minimally invasive parathyroidectomy, especially in cases with a single adenoma.

Purpose: Currently, there is an increasing interest regarding the impact of COVID-19 on the thyroid function. As several recent reports have described the onset of thyroid dysfunction in patients diagnosed with COVID-19, we performed a systematic review to assess the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in patients with COVID-19 as this information could be clinically relevant for the management of these patients.
Methods: A comprehensive computer literature search using PubMed/Medline and Cochrane databases was performed until November 14, 2020 to search original articles evaluating thyroid dysfunction in COVID-19 patients.

Objectives: Results can vary between different free thyroxine (FT4) assays; global standardization would improve comparability of results between laboratories, allowing development of common clinical decision limits in evidence-based guidelines.
Content: We summarize the path to standardization of FT4 assays, and challenges associated with FT4 testing in special populations, including the need for collaborative efforts toward establishing population-specific reference intervals. The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine Committee for Standardization of Thyroid Function Tests has undertaken FT4 immunoassay method comparison and recalibration studies and developed a reference measurement procedure that is currently being validated.
