Birth-related fractures are an important differential diagnosis of child abuse in early infancy. While fractures associated to vaginal deliveries are well known, cesarean section is not necessarily known to cause such injuries. Nevertheless neonatal fractures have been described after cesarean sections.

DEHP is an endocrine disruptor that interferes with the function of the female reproductive system. Several studies suggested that DEHP affects steroidogenesis in human and rodent granulosa cells (GC). Some studies have shown that DEHP can also affect the FSH-stimulated steroidogenesis in GC; however, the mechanism by which DEHP affects hormone-challenged steroidogenesis in human GC is not understood.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied how different COVID-19 vaccines work against new virus variants, especially the Omicron strain.
  • They found that people who got the same type of vaccine multiple times had strong immunity, but there was a bit less protection against Omicron compared to earlier versions of the virus.
  • Both types of vaccination (same or different vaccines) created a strong immune response, which can help decide future health guidelines.

Recent findings suggest that high-grade serous ovarian cancer can originate in the fallopian tube. Not only has that made the identification of precursor lesions pivotal in early detection and prevention of these cancers, prophylactic salpingectomy alongside hysterectomy for benign indications has been increasingly proposed as well. The present prospective single-center study included 273 women who underwent opportunistic salpingectomy alongside laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy.

We advise that only clinically validated HPV assays which have fulfilled internationally accepted performance criteria be used for primary cervical screening. Further, assays should be demonstrated to be fit for purpose in the laboratory in which they will ultimately be performed, and quality materials manuals and frameworks will be helpful in this endeavor. Importantly, there is a fundamental shortage of well validated, low-cost, low complexity HPV tests that have demonstrated utility in a near-patient setting; representing a significant challenge and focus for future development in order to reach the WHO's goal of eliminating cervical cancer.

Advanced Nanomedicine for High-Risk HPV-Driven Head and Neck Cancer.

Viruses

December 2022

Department of Clinical Laboratory, The Cancer Hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Zhejiang Cancer Hospital), Institute of Basic Medicine and Cancer (IBMC), Chinese Academy of Sciences, No. 1 East Banshan Road, Gongshu District, Hangzhou 310022, China.

The incidence of high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HR-HPV)-driven head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is on the rise globally. HR-HPV-driven HNSCC displays molecular and clinical characteristics distinct from HPV-uninvolved cases. Therapeutic strategies for HR-HPV-driven HNSCC are under investigation.

During the last two and a half years, clinical manifestations, disease severity, and pregnancy outcomes have differed among pregnant patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. These changes were preceded by the presence of new variants of SARS-CoV-2, known in the literature as variants of concern. The aim of this study is to describe the differences between maternal clinical characteristics and perinatal outcomes among pregnant women with COVID-19 during four waves of the COVID-19 epidemic in Serbia.

Metastasis of high-grade ovarian carcinoma (HGSC) is orchestrated by soluble mediators of the tumor microenvironment. Here, we have used transcriptomic profiling to identify lipid-mediated signaling pathways encompassing 41 ligand-synthesizing enzymes and 23 cognate receptors in tumor, immune and stroma cells from HGSC metastases and ascites. Due to its strong association with a poor clinical outcome, prostacyclin (PGI) synthase (PTGIS) is of particular interest in this signaling network.

This study evaluated factors that influence the cost-effectiveness of talazoparib, particularly for patients with a germline breast-cancer-gene-(brca)-mutation and locally advanced or metastasized breast cancer within the context of the German healthcare system. We constructed a partitioned survival model to compare medical costs and treatment effectiveness for patients with such cancers over 45 months. Transition probabilities were derived from survival data from a randomized Phase-III EMBRACA trial, utilities based on published reports, and costs in Euros, which included costs for drug acquisition, clinical monitoring, and treatment of adverse events.

: Cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) usually showed an infiltrative growth pattern into endocervical stroma. In rare cases, SCC spreads superficially as an intraepithelial lesion to proximal uterine segments, and more rarely, involves invasive and more aggressive behavior on secondary sites. : In this study, we present the case of an interesting form of cervical SCC growth and we discuss the possible reasons for that presentation.

The inflammatory processes that occur at the maternal−fetal interface are considered one of the factors that are responsible for preterm birth. The pro-inflammatory roles of the Gal-3-induced activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and the consecutive production of IL-1β have been described in several acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, but the role of this inflammatory axis in parturition has not been studied. The aim of this study was to analyze the protein expression of Gal-3, NLRP3, and IL-1β in the decidua, villi, and fetal membranes, and to analyze their mutual correlation and correlation with the clinical parameters of inflammation in preterm birth (PTB) and term birth (TB).

Fibroid Removal after Myomectomy: An Overview on the Problems of Power Morcellation.

Healthcare (Basel)

October 2022

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and CERICSAL (CEntro di RIcerca Clinico SALentino), "Veris delli Ponti Hospital", Scorrano, 73020 Lecce, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • - The authors evaluated the risks and outcomes associated with uterine fibroid morcellation, specifically the potential spread of hidden uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) during laparoscopic versus open myomectomies, considering the influence of adherence to medical guidelines.
  • - They conducted a comprehensive review of literature from 1990-2021, concluding that while there is a general risk for LMS post-myomectomy, proper adherence to scientific guidelines can minimize risks associated with laparoscopic procedures.
  • - The review emphasizes that gynecological societies do not outright ban morcellation but recommend it based on individual patient assessments, urging doctors to provide thorough information to patients during the consent process.

Introduction: Hysterectomy now belongs to standard gynecological procedures. Moreover, a shift towards laparoscopic techniques is ever more apparent as they provide many advantages such as less traumatization and shorter convalescence. Large uteri are still mentioned as contraindications for laparoscopic hysterectomy even though those patients might benefit from the lower morbidity associated with minimal invasive techniques.

Background: As a consequence of the progressive decline in human semen quality in recent decades, modern epidemiological investigations have identified several trace elements that could be responsible for this phenomenon. However, their levels in semen have not been clearly elucidated, particularly for elements present in ultra-trace levels.

Methods: We aimed to determine the levels of 39 (ultra)trace elements and 5 macroelements in human semen samples with confirmed normozoospermia using ICP-based techniques.
