Considering the mutual relationship between redox disbalance and inflammation in (HP) infection, we aimed to evaluate whether the polymorphisms in antioxidant glutathione transferases genes ( rs1695, rs1138272, rs4925 and rs156697) modify susceptibility to HP infection, as well as the severity of HP-associated gastric manifestation development. Therefore, GST gene polymorphisms were determined via the appropriate PCR in 101 HP-positive and 107 HP-negative patients. Our results show that carriers of the variant genotype (rs1695) or at least one variant allele (rs1138272) were more prone to the development of HP-positive gastritis compared with reference allele carriers (OR = 3.

Cirrhotic cardiomyopathy (CCM) is a diagnostic entity defined as cardiac dysfunction (diastolic and/or systolic) in patients with liver cirrhosis, in the absence of overt cardiac disorder. Pathogenically, CCM stems from a combination of systemic and local hepatic factors that, through hemodynamic and neurohormonal changes, affect the balance of cardiac function and lead to its remodeling. Vascular changes in cirrhosis, mostly driven by portal hypertension, splanchnic vasodilatation, and increased cardiac output alongside maladaptively upregulated feedback systems, lead to fluid accumulation, venostasis, and cardiac dysfunction.

Glucocorticoids are used for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) therapy; however nearly 50 % of IBD patients exhibit resistance or dependence. This study evaluates the relationship between methylation level at two CpG sites (cg21991396 and cg00448525) within NLRP3 promoter and glucocorticoid response of 94 IBD pediatrics (39 with Crohn's disease (40.4 %)) and 47 IBD adults (26 with Crohn's disease (55.

The phenomenon of drug-induced mucosal damage has not been reported much in the literature, although over 100 drugs are known to cause this condition. Tetracyclines contribute the most to mucosal damage. The common symptoms are difficulty swallowing, pain while swallowing, and possibly retrosternal pain.

Background/objectives: Most cases of colorectal cancer (CRC) arise from adenomatous polyps. Identifying risk factors for colorectal adenoma (CRA) is critical for CRC prevention. Emerging evidence suggests a link between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and an elevated risk of CRA and CRC, potentially mediated by visceral obesity and adiponectin (APN).

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), which is notorious for its aggressiveness and poor prognosis, remains an area of great unmet medical need, with a 5-year survival rate of 10% - the lowest of all solid tumours. At diagnosis, only 20% of patients have resectable pancreatic cancer (RPC) or borderline RPC (BRPC) disease, while 80% of patients have unresectable tumours that are locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) or have distant metastases. Nearly 60% of patients who undergo upfront surgery for RPC are unable to receive adequate adjuvant chemotherapy (CHT) because of postoperative complications and early cancer recurrence.

Background: Nutrition recommendations in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are to consume rye or integral bread instead of white bread. A positive effect on glucoregulation has been achieved by enriching food with various biologically active substances of herbal origin, so we formulated an herbal mixture that can be used as a supplement for a special type of bread (STB) to achieve better effects on postprandial glucose and insulin levels in patients with T2DM.
Aim: To compare organoleptic characteristics and effects of two types of bread on postprandial glucose and insulin levels in T2DM patients.

Iron deficiency (IDA) and chronic disease (ACD) anemia are complications of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). Therapeutic modalities in remission and active IBD depend on the type of anemia. This study evaluated the link between hepcidin-25, proinflammatory cytokines, and platelet activation markers as biomarkers of anemia and inflammation in active IBD and remission.

Methods: We performed a systematic review of the literature using MEDLINE and LILACS databases. We searched for articles published in the period from January 1990 to December 24, 2022, to identify patients who developed liver abscesses due to Aspergillus spp.

Purpose: The combination of gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel is an established standard treatment in the first-line treatment of metastatic ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas (mPDAC). Afatinib, an oral second-generation pan ErbB family tyrosine kinase inhibitor, has shown promising pre-clinical signs in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. The aim of this phase 1b trial was to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of afatinib in combination with gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel in patients with mPDAC.

Small bowel obstruction is a frequent medical condition with various causes, the most common being postoperative adhesions, volvulus, intussusception, hernias, and tumors. A bezoar-induced blockage of the small intestine is a rare condition that accounts for approximately 4% of all small bowel obstruction cases. Herein, we present the case report of a 71-year-old patient with diffuse abdominal pain caused by a small bowel obstruction due to a calcified bezoar (bezoar egg) resulting from a post-radiation intestinal stricture.

Aim To analyse the impact of the length of antiviral therapy with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) on the renal function in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Methods A cross-sectional study included 75 patients with CHB treated with tenofovir, who had a normal renal function at the beginning of the treatment. Renal function was determined based on glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) value using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease formula (MDRD).

The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2), includes a clinical spectrum of diseases from mild to severe progressive pneumonia, which has affected and still affects the human population worldwide. Most commonly, it is presented by respiratory symptoms, but studies have shown that about 50% of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection have at least one gastrointestinal symptom (GI), predominantly nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of appetite. In addition, abnormal liver functional tests are commonly present in the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Background: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic, recurrent inflammatory diseases with partly understood etiology and pathogenesis. The course of IBD, both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, is characterized by periods of relapse and remission with the possible occurrence of extraintestinal manifestations.
Summary: During the last decades, therapeutic goals in IBD evolved toward endoscopic remission and mucosal healing creating the need for early administration of disease-modifying agents (DMAs).

We present dynamic 18 F-FDG PET/CT acquisition in a 52-year-old old woman with histologically proven hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE). Metabolic rate of FDG images generated with traditional and relative Patlak analysis show the AE manifestation in the liver significantly better the static SUV images. Dynamic PET may thus have the potential to increase sensitivity in the assessment of hepatic AE manifestations.

Foreign body ingestion is a frequently encountered emergency in healthcare institutions. It mostly affects pediatric populations, although it can also affect adults with developmental delays, those with psychiatric diseases, drug abusers, and prisoners. Endoscopy is a diagnostic and treatment method for suspected foreign body ingestion.
