Centro de Investigación en Salud Poblacional, Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública. Mexico. Electronic address:

Introduction And Objectives: We aimed to analyze the trends of total and sex-stratified mortality from hepatitis C virus (HCV) and to estimate the proportion of non-alcoholic liver disease deaths in Mexico attributable to HCV from 2001-2017.

Materials And Methods: Using the mortality multiple-cause dataset, we selected the codes for acute HCV and chronic HCV to analyze trends from 2001 to 2017. We then estimated the proportion of HCV-related deaths out of non-alcoholic chronic liver disease deaths, by including in the denominator: other acute and chronic viral hepatitis, malignant neoplasm of the liver, liver failure, chronic hepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis of the liver, and other inflammatory diseases of the liver.

Proteinase 3 (PR3) is the main target antigen of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCAs) in PR3-ANCA-associated vasculitis. A small fraction of PR3 is constitutively exposed on the surface of quiescent blood neutrophils in a proteolytically inactive form. When activated, neutrophils expose an induced form of membrane-bound PR3 (PR3) on their surface as well, which is enzymatically less active than unbound PR3 in solution due to its altered conformation.

Department of Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA; William J. von Liebig Center for Transplantation and Clinical Regeneration, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA. Electronic address:

Background Aims: Roux en y anastomosis is a preferred method of biliary reconstruction in liver transplantation that involves living donors or pediatric patients. However, biliary stricture is a frequent and serious complication, accounting for up to 40% of biliary complications in these patients. Previously, we demonstrated that extraluminal delivery of adipose-derived (AD) mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) decreased peri-biliary fibrosis and increased neo-angiogenesis in a porcine model of duct-to-duct biliary anastomosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the posterior interosseus nerve (PIN) location during elbow surgeries, aiming to find a more accurate estimating method using transepicondylar distance (TED).
  • Two methods were tested: Method A used electronic calipers on 39 cadavers, while Method B employed a sterile tape measure on 16 cadavers in a pronation position.
  • Results showed that Method B provided a much closer estimate of the PIN's location with a mean difference of ±2 mm, making it a simpler and more reliable technique compared to Method A.

Article Synopsis
  • Sex differences play a significant role in neuroimaging phenotypes related to dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), but the extent of this contribution remains underexplored.
  • A study involving 442 probable DLB patients revealed that males exhibited higher rates of frontal atrophy and smaller gray matter volumes in several regions compared to females, suggesting distinct neurodegenerative patterns based on sex.
  • Additionally, the interaction between sex and age showed that while younger females experienced less atrophy than males, this difference diminished by around age 75, indicating a convergence in atrophy levels as age increases.

Estimation of insulin sensitivity (S) and its daily variation are key for optimizing insulin therapy in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). We recently developed a method for S estimation from continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) data in adults with T1D (S) and validated it under restrained experimental conditions. Herein, we validate in vivo a new version of S performing well in daily life unrestrained conditions.

Background: Left atrial (LA) reservoir strain <18% and booster strain <8% have been proposed as the optimal threshold to detect increased left ventricular (LV) filling pressure in patients with acquired heart disease. The purpose of this study was to determine whether these LA strain cut-off points can detect increased LV filling pressure in adults with coarctation of aorta (COA).

Methods: This retrospective study included adults with COA (n = 126; age, 36 ± 16 years) who underwent non-simultaneous cardiac catheterization and echocardiography.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a primary brain tumor that carries a dismal prognosis, which is primarily attributed to tumor recurrence after surgery and resistance to chemotherapy. Since the tumor recurrence appears near the site of surgical resection, a concept of immediate and local application of chemotherapeutic after initial tumor removal could lead to improved treatment outcome. With the ultimate goal of developing a locally-applied, injectable drug delivery vehicle for GBM treatment, we created elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) hydrogels.

Hemodynamic Assessment in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction.

Cardiol Clin

November 2022

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Mayo Clinic and Foundation, 200 First Street Southwest, Rochester, MN 55905, USA. Electronic address:

Heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is characterized by an inability of the heart to perfuse the body without pathologic increases in filling pressure at rest or during exertion. Right heart catheterization provides direct assessment for HF, providing the most robust and direct method to evaluate the central hemodynamic abnormalities, and serves as the gold standard to confirm or refute the presence of HFpEF. This article reviews current understanding of the best practices in the performance and interpretation of hemodynamic assessment, relates important pathophysiologic concepts to clinical care, and discusses current and evidence-based applications of hemodynamics in HFpEF.
