Background: The treatment landscape for active ulcerative colitis is rapidly evolving and current real-world evidence on response to advanced therapy is limited. This study aimed to determine indicators of inadequate therapeutic response among patients with ulcerative colitis in Germany initiating advanced therapy.
Methods: This retrospective analysis used German claims data (2015-2022) from adult patients (≥ 18 years).

This study demonstrates the effectiveness of propidium iodide as a reliable marker for detecting dead or dying cells in frozen liver tissue sections. By comparing propidium iodide staining with the widely used Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay, both methods showed consistent results in disease models such as alcohol-induced fibrosis and Western diet-induced fatty liver. Additionally, propidium iodide was successfully co-stained with other fluorescent markers, like phalloidin (for actin filaments) and antibodies targeting collagen, enabling detailed spatial analysis of dying cells within tissue.

The non-invasive assessment of disease severity remains pivotal in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) as it has wide implications in predicting liver-related complications or death. Shear-wave elastography (SWE) is an emerging ultrasound-based method to non-invasively measure liver stiffness. The aim of our study was to evaluate two-dimensional (2D) and point (p) SWE to predict the presence of esophageal varices (EV) or clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH).

: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a collection of metabolic disorders that include insulin resistance, central obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. The prevalence of MS affects 20-30% of adults worldwide, leading to serious health, social, and economic issues. Mitochondrial dysfunction, characterized by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations and altered dynamics, plays a pivotal role in MS by impairing glucose oxidation.

The airway epithelium provides a crucial barrier against infection with respiratory pathogens. This barrier can be impaired following viral infection, paving the way for bacterial superinfections. Type I interferons (IFNs) are important antiviral mediators, and inhaled formulations of these glycoproteins are considered a potential approach for the treatment of respiratory viral infections.

Objective: To study pregnancy outcomes and complications in women with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH).
Methods: A retrospective multicenter study was conducted at tertiary reference centers in 5 countries (Austria, Germany, Italy, Sweden, USA), including 72 adult women with CAH (nonclassic [NC] n = 34, simple virilizing [SV] n = 21, salt wasting [SW] n = 17).
Results: A total of 133 pregnancies, 112 live births, and 25 abortions were documented.

Background: Postoperative sore throat is a frequent and distressing complication caused by airway instrumentation during general anesthesia. The discomfort can lead to immediate distress, delayed recovery and reduce patient satisfaction. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of preoperative ketamine gargle on the occurrence of postoperative sore throat among adult patients who underwent surgery under general anesthesia with endotracheal tube.

Onset, progression and cardiovascular outcome of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are influenced by the concomitant sterile inflammation. The pro-inflammatory cytokine family interleukin (IL)-1 is crucial in CKD with the key alarmin IL-1α playing an additional role as an adhesion molecule that facilitates immune cell tissue infiltration and consequently inflammation. Here, we investigate calcium ion and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-dependent regulation of different aspects of IL-1α-mediated inflammation.

"Medical scientists" are postgraduate investigators who are engaged in biomedical research, and either hold a biomedical PhD or are qualified in medicine but do not participate in patient care. Medical scientists constitute ~40% of staff at medical faculties and >90% at nonuniversity medical research institutions in Germany. However, medical scientists in Germany face limited long-term career prospects and a lack of dedicated training and support programmes.

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of the ethanol extract (GPEE) on oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic markers in a rat model of streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus (DM). Phytochemical analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was performed to measure the total phenolic and flavonoid contents. In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated through DPPH, FRAP, HO, and NO scavenging tests, and the in vivo effects of the GPEE were assessed in streptozotocin-induced DM rats.

Pro-inflammatory cytokines are emerging as neuroinflammatory mediators in Parkinson's disease (PD) due to their ability to act through neuronal cytokine receptors. Critical questions persist regarding the role of cytokines in neuronal dysfunction and their contribution to PD pathology. Specifically, the potential synergy of the hallmark PD protein alpha-synuclein (α-syn) with cytokines is of interest.

Barth Syndrome (BTHS) is a rare X-linked disease, characterized clinically by cardiomyopathy, skeletal myopathy, neutropenia, and growth retardation. BTHS is caused by mutations in the phospholipid acyltransferase tafazzin (Gene: TAFAZZIN, TAZ). Tafazzin catalyzes the final step in the remodeling of cardiolipin (CL), a glycerophospholipid located in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
