Unsupervised clustering analysis of treatment strategies for elite female athletes with severe stress urinary incontinence: focusing on competition return and SUI improvement.

Purpose: To evaluate two primary outcomes in elite female athletes (EFAs) with severe stress urinary incontinence (SUI) 24 months post-intervention: return to elite-level competition and improvement in SUI symptoms. Clustering analysis was conducted to identify subgroups within the patient population and explore treatment efficacy.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 183 EFAs with severe SUI who underwent treatments including pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT), vaginal and urethral erbium laser (Fotona Laser), and mid-urethral sling (MUS) surgery.

Positive effect of erythromycin on ineffective oesophageal motility in laryngopharyngeal reflux patients: Room for a novel treatment?

Introduction: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) management guidelines are currently derived from the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) which has been shown to be poorly effective in controlling symptoms for these patients. Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that has been used extensively as a prokinetic agent for the gastrointestinal tract. The management of LPR with prokinetics is a novel therapy being investigated with regard to its effectiveness.

Iron and Copper Liver Concentrations in Wilson Disease.

Background And Aims: Wilson disease (WD) results in the defective incorporation of copper into ceruloplasmin as well as decreased biliary copper excretion. Secondary iron overload has also been associated with WD; however, the prevalence is currently unknown. This study aims to determine the prevalence of potential secondary iron overload in patients suspected to have WD.

Influence of foveal glial tissue after macular hole surgery on outer retinal restoration and visual acuity.

Purpose: To investigate the impact of foveal glial tissue on the anatomical and functional results after macular hole (MH) surgery.

Methods: This study included 141 consecutive eyes that underwent successful vitrectomy for full-thickness MH between January 2015 and December 2022. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and the length of outer retinal defects were evaluated preoperatively and at 6 months postoperatively.

The Impact of Pudendal Nerve Injection in Vaginal Surgery: A Secondary Analysis.

Importance: Evidence regarding the effect of pudendal nerve blockade during vaginal surgery is conflicting. Previous studies compared pudendal nerve blockade to either normal saline placebo injection or no injection, demonstrating small or no difference in pain outcomes. Studies investigating nerve blocks at the time of vaginal surgery have not evaluated the effect of infiltration of the space around the pudendal nerve.

Predictors of Outcomes After Gastric Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy for Refractory Gastroparesis: A Systematic Review.

Introduction: Gastroparesis is a debilitating gastroduodenal disorder for which gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (GPOEM) has emerged as an efficacious treatment option. However, response to GPOEM varies between 50% and 80%, such that preoperative predictors of treatment success are needed to guide patient selection.

Methods: We performed a systematic review to identify predictors of clinical and functional response to GPOEM among adult patients with gastroparesis (PROSPERO: CRD42023457359).

Pediatric macular hole associated with vitreoretinal traction on epiretinal lesions - a case report and literature review.

Purpose: We describe a case of non-traumatic macular hole in a pediatric patient associated with numerous epiretinal lesions throughout the macula.

Methods: A healthy 9-year-old girl presented to retina clinic with several months of blurry vision in the right eye. Clinically, there was a full-thickness macular hole with serous detachment and white epiretinal tufts.

Photobiomodulation Therapy for Serous Pigment Epithelium Detachment in Chronic Central Serous Chorioretinopathy.

Background: The surgical management of complicated diverticulitis varies across Europe. EAES members prioritized this topic to be addressed by a clinical practice guideline through an online questionnaire.

Objective: To develop evidence-informed clinical practice recommendations for key stakeholders involved in the treatment of complicated diverticulitis; to improve operative and perioperative outcomes, patient experience and quality of life through a systematic evidence-to-decision approach by a diverse, multidisciplinary panel.

Surgical management of complicated diverticulitis: systematic review and individual patient data network meta-analysis : An EAES/ESCP collaborative project.

Background: We performed a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) of individualized patient data (IPD) to inform the development of evidence-informed clinical practice recommendations.

Methods: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central in October 2023 to identify RCTs comparing Hartmann's resection (HR), primary resection and anastomosis (PRA), or laparoscopic peritoneal lavage (LPL) among patients with class Ib-IV Hinchey diverticulitis. Outcomes of interest were prioritized by an international, multidisciplinary panel including two patient partners.

Role of immune-checkpoint LAG3 as a biomarker finding tool in patient-derived organoid cultures of breast cancer.

LAG3 plays a regulatory role in immunity and emerged as an inhibitory immune checkpoint molecule comparable to PD-L1 and CTLA-4 and a potential target for enhancing anti-cancer immune responses. We generated 3D cancer cultures as a model to identify novel molecular biomarkers for the selection of patients suitable for α-LAG3 treatment and simultaneously the possibility to perform an early diagnosis due to its higher presence in breast cancer, also to achieve a theragnostic approach. Our data confirm the extreme dysregulation of LAG3 in breast cancer with significantly higher expression in tumor tissue specimens, compared to non-cancerous tissue controls.

Sellar and perisellar meningiomas: effects on pituitary function in a Spanish cohort observational study.

Purpose: Studies focused on the effects of sellar and/or perisellar (S/PS) meningiomas on pituitary function are scarce. The primary objective of the present study was to determinate the effects that S/PS meningiomas and their treatments have on pituitary function. Also, we described the clinical characteristics and therapeutic outcomes of the cohort of adult Spanish patients.

Assessment of dyslipidemia management in Turkey using a Delphi panel.

This study evaluated the management of dyslipidemia in Turkey with the goal of understanding current diagnosis and treatment patterns, as well as identifying unmet needs in achieving effective low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) targets. Using a Delphi panel consisting of nine expert cardiologists, the study reveals key gaps in dyslipidemia management, particularly in the underutilization of combination therapies, such as statins and PCSK9 inhibitors, which are crucial for achieving LDL-C targets in high-risk patients. The findings indicate that while many patients with very high cardiovascular risk are diagnosed, a significant proportion do not receive optimal treatment to reach LDL-C levels recommended by European guidelines.

PLK1 overexpression suppresses homologous recombination and confers cellular sensitivity to PARP inhibition.

The overexpression of Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) is associated with poor clinical outcomes in various malignancies, making it an attractive target for anticancer therapies. Although recent studies suggest PLK1's involvement in homologous recombination (HR), the impact of its overexpression on HR remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of PLK1 overexpression on HR using bioinformatics and experimental approaches.

Concordance and test-retest consistency of sleep biomarker-based neurodegenerative disorder profiling.

Biomarkers that aid in early detection of neurodegeneration are needed to enable early symptomatic treatment and enable identification of people who may benefit from neuroprotective interventions. Increasing evidence suggests that sleep biomarkers may be useful, given the bi-directional relationship between sleep and neurodegeneration and the prominence of sleep disturbances and altered sleep architectural characteristics in several neurodegenerative disorders. This study aimed to demonstrate that sleep can accurately characterize specific neurodegenerative disorders (NDD).

Whole genome sequencing reveals candidate causal genetic variants for spastic syndrome in Holstein cattle.

Bovine spastic syndrome (SS) is a progressive, adult-onset neuromuscular disorder (NMD). SS is inherited but the mode of inheritance is unclear. The aim of this study was to characterize the phenotype and to identify a possible genetic cause of SS by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and focusing on protein-changing variants.

Risk factors for constipation during pregnancy: a multicentre prospective cohort study.

Background: Constipation is frequently encountered in the population of pregnant women. Physical activity and nutritional factors are considered common causes of constipation; however, their impact on this population has not yet been evaluated precisely. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of constipation and its risk factors during pregnancy and postpartum.

Emergence of Circulating Tumor DNA as a Precision Biomarker in Lung Cancer Radiation Oncology and Beyond.

Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is emerging as a transformative biomarker in the management of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This review focuses on its role in detecting minimal residual disease (MRD), predicting treatment response, and guiding therapeutic decision-making in radiation oncology and immunotherapy. A systematic review of the comparative effects of sound and music interventions for intensive care unit patients' outcomes.

Background: Despite syntheses of evidence showing efficacy of music intervention for improving psychological and physiological outcomes in critically ill patients, interventions that include nonmusic sounds have not been addressed in reviews of evidence. It is unclear if nonmusic sounds in the intensive care unit (ICU) can confer benefits similar to those of music.

Objective: The aim of this study was to summarise and contrast available evidence on the effect of music and nonmusic sound interventions for the physiological and psychological outcomes of ICU patients based on the results of randomised controlled trials.

Malnutrition Diagnosed via Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) Criteria - Association with Clinical Outcomes and Predictive Value: A Systematic Review of Systematic Reviews.

Objectives: Malnutrition is very common in people with cancer. The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) recommendation on criteria has been proposed as a gold standard for diagnosing malnutrition. The diagnosis of malnutrition includes phenotypic criteria such as unintentional weight loss and etiologic criteria such as reduced food intake.

Liver Cirrhosis: ancient disease, new challenge.

Liver cirrhosis is a common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Excessive alcohol consumption and metabolic associated steatotic liver disease are the most common etiological factors of cirrhosis in our region. Cirrhosis occurs in two well-differentiated phases, compensated and decompensated, depending on the absence or presence of complications, respectively.
