It is a clear fact that many complications in surgical treatment, not just in cardiovascular surgery, are caused by things related to surgical techniques. In other words, postoperative problems are already determined by preoperative surgical management and intraoperative surgical operations. This describes strategies to avoid the surgical complications of distal bypass using the autogenous veins for each item.

Effect of evolocumab in patients with chronic limb threatening ischemia (Evol-CLI study).

Cardiovasc Revasc Med

November 2024

Adventist Heart & Vascular Institute, Saint Helena Hospital, St. Helena, CA, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) is associated with increased risk of major adverse cardiac and limb events (MACLE). In patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), evolocumab is associated with decreased MACLE, improved maximal walking time, increased vascular flow-mediated dilation (FMD), and decreased carotid intima-media thickness (IMT). We investigated the additive effect of evolocumab in patients with CLTI on maximally tolerated lipid lowering therapy after an index revascularization for non-healing wounds.

Objective: Wound, Ischemia, and foot Infection (WIfI) staging was established to provide objective classification in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and to predict 1-year major amputation risk. Our goal was to validate WIfI staging using data from the Best Endovascular vs Best Surgical Therapy in Patients with CLTI (BEST-CLI) trial.

Methods: Data from the BEST-CLI Trial, a prospective randomized trial comparing surgical revascularization (OPEN) and endovascular revascularization (ENDO), were used to assess the association of WIfI stage on long-term outcomes in an intention-to-treat analysis.

Non-negligible Polyhalogenated Carbazoles in Arctic Soils and Sediments: Occurrence, Target and Suspect Screening, and Potential Sources.

Environ Sci Technol

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100085, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) in soil and sediment samples from Ny-Ålesund, Arctic, finding significant concentrations, especially of 3,6-dichlorocarbazole and 3-chlorocarbazole.
  • The results indicated that sediments contained about six times more unknown PHCZs compared to target PHCZs, with concentrations suggesting environmental presence possibly due to long-range transport and human activities.
  • Toxicity assessments showed low risk associated with these compounds in Arctic soils and sediments, marking the first documentation of PHCZs in this region and highlighting potential environmental concerns.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how reactive oxygen species (ROS) affect nitric oxide levels and neuroinflammation in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) of rats given high fructose, linking increased blood pressure to these processes.
  • - Researchers treated hypertensive rats with CLI-095 and glycyrrhizic acid (GA) to mitigate inflammation, finding that these treatments reduced blood pressure and preserved nitric oxide synthase levels while decreasing inflammatory markers.
  • - Findings suggest that CLI-095 and GA have potential benefits in treating hypertension and inflammation by interrupting the interaction between acetylated HMGB1 and TLR4, challenging traditional views on the neuroinflammatory causes of hypertension.

December 2024

MTA-SZTE Lendület "Momentum" Computational Reaction Dynamics Research Group, Interdisciplinary Excellence Centre and Department of Physical Chemistry and Materials Science, Institute of Chemistry, University of Szeged, Szeged H-6720, Hungary.

Article Synopsis
  • The studies of gas-phase S2 reactions have enhanced our understanding of basic chemical processes and their mechanisms, providing deep insights into chemical dynamics.
  • This research focuses on the reactions involving fluorine and CHClI, using advanced computational methods to explore different reaction pathways and their associated energies.
  • Findings indicate that additional halogenation of CHY alters reaction dynamics, making certain reaction pathways more favorable and reducing the prominence of the classic backside attack mechanism in favor of other processes like halogen-bonded complex formation.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Xiaoyanlidan Tablet (XYLDT) is a Chinese patent medicine consisted of three traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) including Andrographis Herba (AH), Linearstripe Rabdosia Herba (LRH) and Picrasmae Ramulus et Folium (PRF). In Chinese traditional medicine theory, XYLDT has the "heat-clearing, dampness-dispelling and gallbladder function promoting" properties, and was widely used in the clinic for decades to treat pain in the subcostal region or bitter taste in the mouth, which were induced by liver-gallbladder dampness-heat. Meanwhile, it was also used for the therapy of acute cholecystitis and cholangitis.

Summary: Short tandem repeat (STR) profiling is commonly performed for authentication of biomedical models of human origin, yet no tools exist to easily compare sets of STR profiles to each other or an existing database in a high-throughput manner. Here, we present STRprofiler, a Python package, command line tool, and Shiny application providing methods for STR profile comparison and cross-contamination detection. STRprofiler can be run with custom databases or used to query against the Cellosaurus cell line database.

Background: Critical limb ischemia (CLI) of the lower limbs (LLs) is a severe condition caused by peripheral arterial obstructive disease (PAOD). Surgical planning for CLI requires the study of limb circulation, and the vascular resistance index (RI) measured by Doppler ultrasound (US) has been used to aid in surgical decision-making. The objective is to correlate the RI of recipient arteries with the patency of LL revascularization surgeries in patients with CLI.
