Background: Dichloroacetate (DCA), a pan-pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase inhibitor, ameliorates multiple pathological conditions and tissue injury and shows strong potential for clinical applications. Here, we investigated the preventive effects of DCA in a murine model of alcohol-associated liver disease.
Methods: C57BL/6J mice were subjected to the acute-on-chronic model of alcohol-associated liver disease and treated with DCA.

External urine management devices were introduced into healthcare as a novel solution to avoid indwelling urinary catheter placement and the associated urinary tract infection risk for adult patients. These devices are favored among healthcare workers and patients. However, the downstream impacts of this device can be detrimental to patient outcomes when immobility is promoted through their use.

Diagnostic challenges continue to impede development of effective therapies for successful management of alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH), creating an unmet need to identify noninvasive biomarkers for AH. In murine models, complement contributes to ethanol-induced liver injury. Therefore, we hypothesized that complement proteins could be rational diagnostic/prognostic biomarkers in AH.

Rates of asymptomatic treatment of urinary tract infection (UTI) has not been thoroughly evaluated within the inpatient psychiatry population. The objective of this study is to describe the rate of antibiotic use for the treatment of asymptomatic UTI in psychiatric inpatients and investigate factors contributing to overuse.

Background: Chronic alcohol consumption impairs gut barrier function and perturbs the gut microbiome. Although shifts in bacterial communities in patients with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) have been characterized, less is known about the interactions between host metabolism and circulating microbe-derived metabolites during the progression of ALD.
Methods: A large panel of gut microbiome-derived metabolites of aromatic amino acids was quantified by stable isotope dilution liquid chromatography with online tandem mass spectrometry in plasma from healthy controls (n = 29), heavy drinkers (n = 10), patients with moderate (n = 16) or severe alcohol-associated hepatitis (n = 40), and alcohol-associated cirrhosis (n = 10).

Postoperative constipation is a common problem among orthopaedic surgical patients leading to discomfort, increased length of stay, and other complications. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of polyethylene glycol compared with docusate sodium for the prevention of constipation, after total knee arthroplasty. The secondary purpose was to examine the effectiveness of polyethylene glycol on pain and strain with bowel movement.

However, adverse events associated with FQs and emerging antimicrobial resistance have led to alternative agents, specifically oral Β-lactams (OBLs), being utilized despite concern of subtherapeutic serum concentrations related to their low relative bioavailability.
Objective: To compare efficacy of antibiotic therapies with bioavailability differences in patients with uncomplicated bacteremia from a urinary source.

With a recent emphasis on sterile compounding regulatory requirements, a newly constructed space or renovations to an existing space may need to be considered in any pharmacy where sterile compounding occurs. Pharmacy leaders from two facilities within a health system outline their experience with important aspects of cleanroom renovation learned through the process. Identifying how to maintain sterile compounding operations during construction is required to continue patient-care services.

Introduction: Intravenous haloperidol has been shown to decrease milligram morphine equivalents (MME) of analgesia and reduce hospital admissions for diabetic gastroparesis. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether haloperidol decreases MME for the treatment of non-specific abdominal pain diagnoses in the emergency department (ED), including gastroparesis, cyclic vomiting, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, and unspecified abdominal pain. The primary outcome compared the difference in MME between encounters.

Introduction: Valproic acid (VPA)-induced hyperammonemia poses several clinical challenges in psychiatric medicine. The reported incidence of this adverse effect varies widely across the literature. Furthermore, practitioners treat hyperammonemia in asymptomatic patients although studies suggest this practice is unnecessary.

Background: Historically, there has been a restrictive approach toward outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) in patients with injection drug use (IDU) due to the fear that they might utilize the intravenous catheter to inject illicit substances.
Objective: We tested the hypothesis that patients with current IDU on OPAT would have less favorable treatment outcomes compared to those without current IDU.
Methods: In this retrospective cohort chart review study of Cleveland Clinic OPAT registry, we identified patients with current IDU by both electronic and manual review.

Collaborative drug therapy management (CDTM) is a written agreement that allows a pharmacist to initiate, modify, or continue pharmacotherapies under a physician's scope of practice. While available literature pertaining to cardiometabolic and respiratory CDTM services is growing, publications are sparse in psychiatry, particularly outside Veterans Health Administration medical centers. A descriptive study was undertaken to demonstrate how a board-certified psychiatric pharmacist would begin organizing a protocol for clinical pharmacy services at an outpatient, community treatment center for mental health and substance abuse disorders.
