Drug-induced kidney injury (DIKI) refers to kidney damage resulting from the administration of medications. The aim of this project was to identify reliable urinary microRNA (miRNAs) biomarkers that can be used as potential predictors of DIKI before disease diagnosis. This study quantified a panel of six miRNAs (miRs-210-3p, 423-5p, 143-3p, 130b-3p, 486-5p, 193a-3p) across multiple time points using urinary samples from a previous investigation evaluating effects of a nephrotoxicant in cynomolgus monkeys.

With the recent success of lipid nanoparticle (LNP) based SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines, the potential for RNA therapeutics has gained widespread attention. The prevalence of highly repetitive sequences within the human Y chromosome has prevented its complete assembly to date and led to its systematic omission from genomic analyses. Here we present de novo assemblies of 43 Y chromosomes spanning 182,900 years of human evolution and report considerable diversity in size and structure. Half of the male-specific euchromatic region is subject to large inversions with a greater than twofold higher recurrence rate compared with all other chromosomes.

The current human reference genome, GRCh38, represents over 20 years of effort to generate a high-quality assembly, which has benefitted society. However, it still has many gaps and errors, and does not represent a biological genome as it is a blend of multiple individuals. Recently, a high-quality telomere-to-telomere reference, CHM13, was generated with the latest long-read technologies, but it was derived from a hydatidiform mole cell line with a nearly homozygous genome.

Cooking improves food aroma, but few studies have explored how cooking affects food aromas. Here, aroma changes in mildly salted large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea, MSLYC) after steaming, baking, frying, and deep frying was investigated. The raw fish was dominated by fishy notes but after cooking, the aroma became dominated by fatty notes.

Background: Longissimus muscle samples were collected from lambs exposed in utero to mycotoxins [E-, endophyte-free tall fescue seed without ergot alkaloids (negative control) or E + , endophyte-infected tall fescue seed containing ergot alkaloids] during mid-gestation (MID; E + /E-) or late-gestation (LATE; E-/E +) harvested at two developmental stages (FETAL, gestational d133) or (MAT, near maturity, 250 d of age; n = 3/treatment/developmental stage). Despite the many challenges inherent in conducting high-quality evaluations in the field of environmental education (EE), there is a growing recognition of the importance of evaluation, not only to gauge program success, but also to use evaluation results to improve programming, support organizational learning, and ensure programs are meeting the needs of diverse audiences. The challenges to conducting high-quality evaluations are exacerbated by historical issues of inequity and systemic racism that are pervasive in the United States and globally. We reviewed the literature on culturally responsive approaches to evaluation to propose a culturally responsive evaluation framework and consider its application in EE.

A series of cocrystals of Ph P=E (E=O, S, Se) with organoiodines were studied to understand the roles of noncovalent interactions including chalcogen (ChB) and halogen (XB) bonding in their formation. The structure of the cocrystal of Ph P=S and 1,2-diiodotetrafluorobezene was determined, which demonstrates a similar chalcogen⋅⋅⋅iodine XB pattern to the previously reported isomorphic Ph P=Se structure. The cocrystalline structures resulting from the combination of 1,3-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,3-F DIB), as well as iodopentafluorobenzene, with all three triphenylphosphine chalcogenides, were also determined.

Background: Ergot alkaloids (E+) are mycotoxins produced by the endophytic fungus, Epichloë coenophiala, in tall fescue that are associated with ergotism in animals. Exposure to ergot alkaloids during gestation reduces fetal weight and placental mass in sheep. Changes of key odorants and aroma profiles of Chinese Laowuzeng baijiu during its one-year ageing were determined by HS-SPME-AEDA and direct injection-AEDA (DI-AEDA). Ethyl hexanoate, (E,E)-2,4-decadienal, and 2-phenylethyl acetate showed the highest FD value (486) in all ageing stages. With regards to aroma profiles, fruity, floral, acidic, sweet/honey and cheesy aromas were enhanced during storage, while pickled vegetable, grain and alcoholic notes weakened during the ageing.

The total phenolic content, flavonoid content, in vitro xanthine oxidase (XOD) inhibitory activity and antioxidant activity (AA) of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver leaf extracts were investigated. The AA investigations included 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, β-carotene/linoleic acid bleaching assay and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) test. The ethyl acetate fraction (EE) showed the highest AA and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity.

A fast surface plasmon resonance (SPR) imaging biosensor system based on wavelength interrogation using an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) and a white light laser is presented. The system combines the merits of a wide-dynamic detection range and high sensitivity offered by the spectral approach with multiplexed high-throughput data collection and a two-dimensional (2D) biosensor array. The key feature is the use of AOTF to realize wavelength scan from a white laser source and thus to achieve fast tracking of the SPR dip movement caused by target molecules binding to the sensor surface.

To improve understanding of property measurements in heterogeneous media, an energy-based weighting function concept is developed. In (assumed) homogeneous media, the instrument spatial weighting function (ISWF) depends only on the energy dissipation distribution set up by the measurement procedure and it reduces to simply inverse sample volume (uniform weighting) for 1-D parallel flow case (ideal permeameter). For 1-D transient flow in homogeneous media, such as with slug tests, the ISWF varies with position and time, with 95% of the total weighting contained within 115 well radii, even late in the test.
