Cupriavidus necator H16 is a gram-negative chemolithoautotrophic bacterium that has been extensively studied for biosynthesis and biodegradation of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) plastics. To improve our understanding of fatty acid metabolism for PHA production, we determined the crystal structure of multi-functional enoyl-CoA hydratase from Cupriavidus necator H16 (CnFadB). The predicted model of CnFadB created by AlphaFold was used to solve the phase problem during determination of the crystal structure of the protein.

Advances in nanotechnology have enabled precise design of catalytic sites for CO photoreduction, pushing product selectivity to near unity. However, activity of most nanostructured photocatalysts remains underwhelming due to fast recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and sluggish hole transfer. To address these issues, we construct colloidal CdS nanosheets (NSs) with the large basal planes terminated by S atomic layers as intrinsic photocatalysts (CdS-S NSs).

Antibiotics have been widely used to inhibit microbial growth and to control bacterial infection; however, they can trigger an imbalance in the gut flora of the host and dysregulate the host gene regulatory system when discharged into the aquatic environment. We investigated the effects of chronic exposure to a low concentration of erythromycin and ampicillin, focusing on gut microbiome and global gene expression profiles from Korea native ricefish (). The proportion of (especially the opportunistic pathogen ) was significantly increased in the ricefish under the chronic exposure to erythromycin and ampicillin, whereas that of other bacterial phyla (i.

, the non-conventional yeast capable of high lipogenesis, is a microbial chassis for producing lipid-based biofuels and chemicals from renewable resources such as lignocellulosic biomass. However, the low tolerance of against furfural, a major inhibitory furan aldehyde derived from the pretreatment processes of lignocellulosic biomass, has restricted the efficient conversion of lignocellulosic hydrolysates. In this study, the furfural tolerance of has been improved by supporting its endogenous detoxification mechanism.

An anion-exchange electrolyte membrane, QPAF(C6)-4, polymerized with hydrophobic 1,4'-bis(3-chlorophenyl)perfluorohexane and hydrophilic (6,6'-(2,7-dichloro-9-fluorene-9.9-diyl)bis(,-dimethylhexan-1-amine) is physically flexible and chemically stable. The drawbacks are relatively large water swelling and lower OH conductivity at higher water uptakes, which are considered to be due to the entanglement of the flexible hydrophobic structure of the membrane.

The electrosynthesis of formate from CO can mitigate environmental issues while providing an economically valuable product. Although stannic oxide is a good catalytic material for formate production, a metallic phase is formed under high reduction overpotentials, reducing its activity. Here, using a fluorine-doped tin oxide catalyst, a high Faradaic efficiency for formate (95% at 100 mA cm) and a maximum partial current density of 330 mA cm (at 400 mA cm) is achieved for the electroreduction of CO.

In photocatalytic water splitting, fluidization is known to minimize the adverse effects of mass-transfer, poor radiation distribution, parasitic back-reactions and photocatalyst handling difficulties, which limit the scalability of immobilized-film and suspended slurry photocatalysts. Fluidization of one-dimensional TiO photocatalyst particles, such as nanorods, -wires and -ribbons, is highly desired as it further enhances the efficiency of photocatalytic reaction, due to their peculiar photo-electrochemical characteristics that result in more effective separation of photo-generated charges and absorption of photons. However, the harsh physical environment of a fluidized bed reactor does not readily allow for nanostructured TiO photocatalysts, as the fine features would be quickly removed from the particle surface.

Renewed interests in the development of bioenergy, biochemicals, and biomaterials have elicited new strategies for engineering the lignin of biomass feedstock plants. This study shows, for the first time, that 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate (DHB) is compatible with the radical coupling reactions that assemble polymeric lignin in plants. We introduced a bacterial 3-dehydroshikimate dehydratase into hybrid poplar (Populus alba × grandidentata) to divert carbon flux away from the shikimate pathway, which lies upstream of lignin biosynthesis.

In the terahertz (THz) electromagnetic wave regime, which has recently received great attention in the fields of communication and security, shielding of THz waves is a significant issue. Therefore, carbon-based nanostructures or polymer-carbon nanocomposites have been widely explored. Herein, significantly enhanced THz shielding efficiency is reported for silver nanowires coated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and nanoscale THz metamaterials, as compared to the cases without nanoscale metamaterials.

Electrochemical conversion of CO to fuels and chemicals as a sustainable solution for waste transformation has garnered tremendous interest to combat the fervent issue of the prevailing high atmospheric CO concentration while contributing to the generation of sustainable energy. Monometallic palladium (Pd) has been shown promising in electrochemical CO reduction, producing formate or CO depending on applied potentials. Recently, bimetallic Pd-based materials strived to fine-tune the binding affinity of key intermediates is a prominent strategy for the desired product formation from CO reduction.

Efficient xylose catabolism in engineered enables more economical lignocellulosic biorefinery with improved production yields per unit of biomass. Yet, the product profile of glucose/xylose co-fermenting is mainly limited to bioethanol and a few other chemicals. Here, we introduced an n-butanol-biosynthesis pathway into a glucose/xylose co-fermenting strain (XUSEA) to evaluate its potential on the production of acetyl-CoA derived products.

Accumulation of water at the interface of the cathode catalyst layer (CCL) and the diffusion media is a major cause of performance loss in H/air fuel cells. Proper engineering of the interface by the use of advanced materials and preparation methods can effectively reduce the extent of this loss by improving the transport of water and gas across this interface. Herein, we present detailed modeling results of water and gas transport across this interface for in-house synthesized carbon material with multiple levels of porosity and by considering the interfacial properties of the carbon material and the microporous layer (MPL).

Computational calculations and experimental studies reveal that the CoOOH phase and the intermediate-spin (IS) state are the key factors for realizing efficient Co-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, according to thermodynamics, general cobalt oxide converts to the CoO phase under OER condition, retarding the OER kinetics. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and scalable strategy to fabricate electrodes with maintaining Fe-CoOOH phase and an IS state under the OER.

Although densified wood pellets are an attractive biomass feedstock for bioenergy and biofuels production, partly due to their ease of transport, their friability and hygroscopic nature (attraction of moisture) have proven problematic in terms of storage and handling. Pre-steaming the biomass was shown to reduce the need for size reduction, significantly increasing pellet durability by relocating the plant cell wall lignin to the fibre surface and consequently enhancing binding between particles. Although steam pretreatment has been shown to facilitate enzyme-mediated hydrolysis of biomass, by increasing cellulose accessibility, drying and pelletization partially impeded enzymatic hydrolysis.
