The development of greener and more sustainable synthesis processes for manufacturing commodity chemicals is of great importance. The majority of current phenol production methods involve harsh reaction conditions with high energy consumption, causing severe environmental pollution. In this study, we present a novel approach for the decarboxylation of hydroxybenzoic acids (HBAs) to phenol using a choline chloride-urea (ChCl-urea) deep eutectic solvent (DES).

Due to the severe climate crisis, biorefineries have been highlighted as replacements for fossil fuel-derived refineries. In traditional sugar-based biorefineries, levulinic acid (LA) is a byproduct. Nonetheless, in 2002, the US Department of Energy noted that LA is a significant building block obtained from biomass, and the biorefinery paradigm has shifted from being sugar-based to non-sugar-based.

Lithium batteries with solid-state electrolytes are an appealing alternative to state-of-the-art non-aqueous lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes because of safety and energy aspects. However, engineering development at the cell level for lithium batteries with solid-state electrolytes is limited. Here, to advance this aspect and produce high-energy lithium cells, we introduce a cell design based on advanced parametrization of microstructural and architectural parameters of electrode and electrolyte components.

Solution-based processing of van der Waals (vdW) one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) materials is an effective strategy to obtain high-quality molecular chains or atomic sheets in a large area with scalability. In this work, quasi-1D vdW TaPtSe was exfoliated via liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) to produce a stably dispersed TaPtSe nanowire solution. In order to screen the optimal exfoliation solvent, nine different solvents were employed with different total surface tensions and polar/dispersive (P/D) component (P/D) ratios.

Designing suitable anion exchange ionomers is critical to improving the performance and in situ durability of anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) as one of the promising devices for producing green hydrogen. Herein, highly gas-permeable and dimensionally stable anion exchange ionomers (QC6xBA and QC6xPA) are developed, in which bulky cyclohexyl (C6) groups are introduced into the polymer backbones. QC6BA-2.

Based on experimental and computational evidence, phthalocyanine (Pc) compounds in the form of quaternary-bound metal-nitrogen (N) atoms are the most effective catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the heat treatment process used in their synthesis may compromise the ideal structure, causing the agglomeration of transition metals. To overcome this issue, a novel method is developed for synthesizing iron (Fe) single-atom catalysts with ideal structures supported by thermally exfoliated graphene oxide (GO).

Background: Industrial biomanufacturing of value-added products using CO as a carbon source is considered more sustainable, cost-effective and resource-efficient than using common carbohydrate feedstocks. Cupriavidus necator H16 is a representative H-oxidizing lithoautotrophic bacterium that can be utilized to valorize CO into valuable chemicals and has recently gained much attention as a promising platform host for versatile C1-based biomanufacturing. Since this microbial platform is genetically tractable and has a high-flux carbon storage pathway, it has been engineered to produce a variety of valuable compounds from renewable carbon sources.

To realize economically feasible electrochemical CO conversion, achieving a high partial current density for value-added products is particularly vital. However, acceleration of the hydrogen evolution reaction due to cathode flooding in a high-current-density region makes this challenging. Herein, we find that partially ligand-derived Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) could prevent electrolyte flooding while maintaining catalytic activity for CO electroreduction.

H-driven microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is an emerging bioelectrochemical technology that enables the production of complex compounds from CO. Although the performance of microbial fermentation in the MES system is closely related to the H production rate, high-performing metallic H-evolving catalysts (HEC) generate cytotoxic HO and metal cations from undesirable side reactions, severely damaging microorganisms. Herein, a novel design for self-detoxifying metallic HEC, resulting in biologically benign H production, is reported.

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites have been investigated for their potential to serve in next-generation perovskite solar cells (PSCs). While PSC technology is approaching commercialization, thermal and moisture stabilities remain a concern. Here, we describe the assembly of PSCs using an imidazoanthraquinone derivative (AQ) as a small organic additive to enhance the device performance and stability.

Electrochemical CO reduction on Cu is a promising approach to produce value-added chemicals using renewable feedstocks, yet various Cu preparations have led to differences in activity and selectivity toward single and multicarbon products. Here, we find, surprisingly, that the effective catalytic activity toward ethylene improves when there is a larger fraction of less active sites acting as reservoirs of *CO on the surface of Cu nanoparticle electrocatalysts. In an adaptation of chemical transient kinetics to electrocatalysis, we measure the dynamic response of a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) cell when the feed gas is abruptly switched between Ar (inert) and CO.

With increasing coffee consumption worldwide, the efficient and sustainable management of spent coffee grounds (SCG) has become increasingly challenging. This study investigated the anaerobic co-digestion of small amounts of SCG with food waste (FW) at increasing co-feeding ratios of 1:100-1:10 (volatile solids basis) to assess the possibility of SCG treatment using the spare capacity of existing anaerobic digesters. Co-feeding SCG increased methane production compared to FW mono-digestion in the tested range of co-feeding ratios without compromising process stability.

As thermoplastic, nontoxic, and biocompatible polyesters, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are considered promising biodegradable plastic candidates for diverse applications. Short-chain-length/medium-chain-length (SCL/MCL) PHA copolymers are flexible and versatile PHAs that are typically produced from fatty acids, which are expensive and toxic. Therefore, to achieve the sustainable biosynthesis of SCL/MCL-PHAs from renewable non-fatty acid carbon sources (e.

Combining an electrochemically stable material onto the surface of a catalyst can improve the durability of a transition metal catalyst, and enable the catalyst to operate stably at high current density. Herein, the contribution of the N-doped carbon shell (NCS) to the electrochemical properties is evaluated by comparing the characteristics of the NiFe@NCS catalyst with the N-doped carbon shell, and the NiFe catalyst. The synthesized NiFe@NCS catalyst has a distinct overpotential difference from the NiFe catalyst (η = 468.

To investigate the solvent effect on the detection of peptides and proteins, nanoelectrospray mass spectra were measured for mixtures of 1 % acetic acid and 5 × 10 M gramicidin S (G), ubiquitin (U), and cytochrome c (C) in water (W), methanol (MeOH), 1-propanol (1-PrOH), acetonitrile (AcN), and 2-propanol (2-PrOH). Although doubly protonated G (G2+) and multiply protonated U (Un+) and C (Cn+) were readily detected with a wide range of mixing ratios of W solutions for MeOH, 1-PrOH, and AcN, Cn+ was totally suppressed for the solutions with mixing ratios (v/v) of W/2-PrOH (50/50) and (70/30). However, denatured Cn+ started to be detected with W/2-PrOH (90/10) together with Gn+ (n = 1, 2) and native Un+ (n = 6-8).

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) provide one of the most feasible remedies to fuel cells' dependency on the dwindling Pt group catalysts. Nevertheless, AEMFCs still suffer reduced durability, which requires an in-depth understanding of their membranes. The low thermal endurance of the anion exchange membranes (AEMs) usually limits the direct application of powerful techniques, such as Raman spectroscopy.
