Introduction: Chronic osteomyelitis is a serious osteoarticular infection that most often occurs in the long bones, responsible for significant morbidity with the risk of fracture and amputation. Despite advances in both antibiotics and surgical treatment, the probability of recurrence of infection remains at around 20%. Cerament-G (BONESUPPORT AB, Sweden) is a synthetic bone substitute that fills the bone void left by surgery, prevents infection and promotes bone regeneration within this space.

A defined immune profile that predicts protection against a pathogen-of-interest, is referred to as a correlate of protection (CoP). A validated SARS-CoV-2 CoP has yet to be defined, however considerable insights have been provided by pre-clinical vaccine and animal rechallenge studies which have fewer associated limitations than equivalent studies in human vaccinees or convalescents, respectively. This literature review focuses on the advantages of the use of animal models for the definition of CoPs, with particular attention on their application in the search for SARS-CoV-2 CoPs.

Purpose: A transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) before the liver transplantation (LT) has been considered a contraindication in cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) because of the risk of tumour growth. We aimed to assess the impact of TIPS on incidental HCC and oncological outcomes in transplanted patients with pre-existing HCC.
Methods: All consecutive transplanted patients for cirrhosis who had a previous TIPS with or without HCC were included.

Liver graft-recipient matching remains challenging, and both morphologic and hemodynamic characteristics have been shown to be relevant indicators of post-transplant outcomes. However, no combined analysis is available to date. To study the impact of both morphologic and hemodynamic characteristics of liver grafts on transplantation outcomes, we retrospectively evaluated all consecutive 257 liver transplantations with prospective hemodynamic measurements from 2017 to 2020 in a single-center perspective.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with osteosarcopenia, and because a physical decline in patients correlates with an increased risk of morbidity, an improvement of the musculoskeletal system is expected to improve morbi-mortality. We recently uncovered that the intestinal hormone Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 (FGF19) is able to promote skeletal muscle mass and strength in rodent models, in addition to its capacity to improve glucose homeostasis. Here, we tested the effects of a treatment with recombinant human FGF19 in a CKD mouse model, which associates sarcopenia and metabolic disorders.

The adaptive response to overfeeding is associated with profound modifications of gene expression in adipose tissue to support lipid storage and weight gain. The objective of this study was to assess in healthy lean men whether a supplementation with polyphenols could interact with these molecular adaptations. Abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies were sampled from 42 subjects participating to an overfeeding protocol providing an excess of 50% of their total energy expenditure for 31 days, and who were supplemented with 2 g/day of grape polyphenols or a placebo.

Background: Surgical rib fixation for multiple rib fractures and flail chest has become more common in the 2000s with interesting results in selected patients. However, surgical rib fixation lacks a consensus on the delay to surgery and the benefits on postoperative clinical outcomes. Our goal was to determine if delay to surgery can affect postoperative outcomes.

Cortisol, a steroid hormone mostly known as "the stress hormone," plays many essential functions in humans due its involvement in several metabolic pathways. It is well-known that cortisol dysregulation is implied in evolution and progression of several chronic pathologies, including cardiac diseases such as heart failure (HF). However, although several sensors have been proposed to date for the determination of cortisol, none of them has been designed for its determination in saliva in order to monitor HF progression.

Functional alignment (FA) is a novel philosophy to deliver a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) that respects individual bony and soft tissue phenotypes within defined limitations. The purpose of this paper is to describe the rationale and technique of FA in the valgus morphotype with the use of an image-based robotic-platform. For the valgus phenotype the principles are personalized pre-operative planning, reconstitution of native coronal alignment without residual varus or valgus of more than 3°, restoration of dynamic sagittal alignment within 5° of neutral, implant sizing to match anatomy, and achievement of defined soft tissue laxity in extension and flexion through implant manipulation within the defined boundaries.
