Cervical cancer (CC) is one of the most common and deadly types of female cancer worldwide. Late diagnosis in CC increases the risk of tumor cells spreading to distant organs (metastasis). The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a fundamental process of cancer metastasis.

Pirfenidone Protects from UVB-Induced Photodamage in Hairless Mice.

Molecules

March 2023

Department of Molecular Biology and Genomics, Institute of Molecular Biology in Medicine and Gene Therapy, CUCS, University of Guadalajara, Guadalajara 44340, Mexico.

Background: Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is the main environmental factor that causes histological degenerative changes of the skin giving rise to a chronic process called photodamage. Non-melanoma skin cancer induced by UVB radiation is a result of a cascade of molecular events caused by DNA damage in epidermis cells, including persistent inflammation, oxidative stress, and suppression of T cell-mediated immunity. Retinoids such as tretinoin have been widely used in skin to treat photoaging and photodamage, though its secondary adverse effects have been recognized.

Gastroenterol Hepatol

May 2023

Gastroenterology Department, Dr. Balmis General University Hospital, Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL), Alicante, Spain; Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Miguel Hernández University, Elche, Spain. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in hospitalized COVID-19 patients across multiple countries to understand how frequently these symptoms occur and their relationship to the severity of the disease.
  • - Among 829 patients, common GI symptoms included anorexia, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, and abdominal pain, but these were generally mild, resolved quickly, and not linked to worse COVID-19 outcomes.
  • - The research also found that a significant number of patients experienced liver injury, but similar to the GI symptoms, it did not correlate with the severity of COVID-19 illness.

Introduction: There is increasing evidence that immunohistochemical expression of p53, Ki-67, and Bcl-2 is associated with aggressive (aBCC) and less aggressive (nBCC) histological subtypes and may have a prognostic role.

Aim: To investigate the clinicopathological features and immunohistochemical expressions of p53, Ki-67, and Bcl-2 in cutaneous basal cell carcinoma focusing on histological subtypes. Their roles and possible interactions in the development and progression of BCC are discussed.

Evaluating Dietary Patterns in Women from Southern Italy and Western Mexico.

Nutrients

April 2022

Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences and Advanced Technologies "GF Ingrassia", University of Catania, 95123 Catania, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional diets, like the Mediterranean and traditional Mexican diets, are beneficial, but Italian and Mexican women are increasingly moving away from these eating patterns.
  • A study analyzed the dietary patterns of 811 Italian women and 215 Mexican women, finding distinct patterns: Italian women consumed more legumes and vegetables or processed snacks, while Mexican women had a mix of meats and processed foods versus fruits and whole grains.
  • Healthier dietary patterns were linked to better nutrient quality, but younger women were more likely to adopt less healthy Western-style diets, highlighting the need to promote traditional diets to younger generations.

The amino acids synthesized by the intestinal microbiota have been correlated with metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance; both are high incidence conditions in Mexico. However, the knowledge of the relationship of fecal amino acids with the development of both diseases in the Mexican population is scarce. The clinical study was descriptive; the study was carried out in the Antiguo Civil Hospital of Guadalajara.

Dietary, Cultural, and Pathogens-Related Selective Pressures Shaped Differential Adaptive Evolution among Native Mexican Populations.

Mol Biol Evol

January 2022

Laboratory of Molecular Anthropology & Centre for Genome Biology, Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences (BiGeA), University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy.

Native American genetic ancestry has been remarkably implicated with increased risk of diverse health issues in several Mexican populations, especially in relation to the dramatic changes in environmental, dietary, and cultural settings they have recently undergone. In particular, the effects of these ecological transitions and Westernization of lifestyles have been investigated so far predominantly on Mestizo individuals. Nevertheless, indigenous groups, rather than admixed Mexicans, have plausibly retained the highest proportions of genetic components shaped by natural selection in response to the ancient milieu experienced by Mexican ancestors during their pre-Columbian evolutionary history.

Background: Based on the pathophysiology of acute kidney injury (AKI), it is plausible that certain early interventions by the nephrologist could influence its trajectory. In this study, we investigated the impact of 5 early nephrology interventions on starting kidney replacement therapy (KRT), AKI progression, and death.

Methods: In a prospective cohort at the Hospital Civil of Guadalajara, we followed up for 10 days AKI patients in whom a nephrology consultation was requested.

Background: The impact of donor quality on post-kidney transplant survival may vary by candidate condition.

Objective: Analyzing the combined use of the Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) and the estimated post-transplant survival (EPTS) scale and their correlation with the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline in deceased-donor kidney recipients (DDKR).

Methods: This was a retrospective, observational cohort study.

Article Synopsis
  • The adoption of rice as a staple in many Asian diets has significantly impacted nutritional habits and created challenges in managing blood sugar levels due to rice's high carbohydrate content and glycemic index.
  • Epidemiological data shows differences in type 2 diabetes and obesity rates among Asian populations, with South Asians experiencing higher prevalence than East Asians, potentially due to historical dietary adaptations.
  • Genetic analysis of various East and South Asian populations suggests that those with a long history of rice or millet consumption may have developed biological adaptations to mitigate the negative effects of high carbohydrate diets.

Introduction: Thyroid hormones can directly affect kidney function; elevated levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are associated with proteinuria, decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and progression to end-stage renal disease. Our hypothesis is that in patients with CKD and TSH at levels considered to be in the low subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) range, lowering TSH with levothyroxine (LVX) improves the clinical parameters of renal function.

Methods: This was a double-blind, randomized, pilot clinical trial in patients with proteinuric CKD (eGFR <60 ml/min per 1.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a serious worldwide health problem, with an estimated global prevalence of 24%; it has a notable relationship with other metabolic disorders, like obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is one of the most important clinical entities of NAFLD, which is associated with an increased risk of progression to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Mexico is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of metabolic diseases; therefore, we sought to investigate the impact that these clinical entities have in the progression to advanced fibrosis in Mexican patients with NASH.
