Background: Opioid anesthetic agents can modulate the impaired immune response in obese patients through mechanisms that involve the expression and release of cytokines. For this reason, anesthetic care for obese patients remains controversial. Therefore, the aim of the study was to compare the effect of opioid-containing anesthesia (OCA) vs opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) using the Cortínez-Sepúlveda model on IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α serum levels before and after surgery in obese patients undergoing bypass surgery.

Introduction: There is increasing evidence that immunohistochemical expression of p53, Ki-67, and Bcl-2 is associated with aggressive (aBCC) and less aggressive (nBCC) histological subtypes and may have a prognostic role.

Aim: To investigate the clinicopathological features and immunohistochemical expressions of p53, Ki-67, and Bcl-2 in cutaneous basal cell carcinoma focusing on histological subtypes. Their roles and possible interactions in the development and progression of BCC are discussed.

Evaluating Dietary Patterns in Women from Southern Italy and Western Mexico.

Nutrients

April 2022

Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences and Advanced Technologies "GF Ingrassia", University of Catania, 95123 Catania, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional diets, like the Mediterranean and traditional Mexican diets, are beneficial, but Italian and Mexican women are increasingly moving away from these eating patterns.
  • A study analyzed the dietary patterns of 811 Italian women and 215 Mexican women, finding distinct patterns: Italian women consumed more legumes and vegetables or processed snacks, while Mexican women had a mix of meats and processed foods versus fruits and whole grains.
  • Healthier dietary patterns were linked to better nutrient quality, but younger women were more likely to adopt less healthy Western-style diets, highlighting the need to promote traditional diets to younger generations.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a prevalent disease throughout the world. The extent of TB illness in childhood is not clear; recent data shows that 10-20% of the cases are found in children under 15 years old. In 2017, 1 million children developed the disease, of which 9% were co-infected with HIV.

Article Synopsis
  • The GENOMEX diet focuses on using genetics to help prevent and manage obesity, particularly in individuals with risk factors for weight-related diseases.
  • A study with 28 participants over six months examined how this diet affected their emotions, self-efficacy, and unhealthy eating behaviors, revealing a significant link between mood and unhealthy eating choices.
  • The intervention led to a reduction in negative emotions and unhealthy eating, with a slight increase in self-efficacy among participants, suggesting that a diet aligned with cultural and genetic factors can positively influence weight management.

Influence of genetic and environmental risk factors in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma in Mexico.

Ann Hepatol

January 2022

Department of Genomic Medicine in Hepatology, Civil Hospital of Guadalajara, "Fray Antonio Alcalde," Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico; Health Sciences Center, University of Guadalajara, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Electronic address:

The latest studies on the epidemiology of diverse types of cancers have located in the scene the relevance of liver tumors, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC is a life-threatening malignancy triggered by chronic exposure to hepatitis B and C viruses, excessive alcohol intake, hepatic lipid droplet accumulation, and aflatoxins that lead to persistent liver damage. The occurrence of such etiological risk factors deeply marks the variability in the incidence of HCC worldwide reflected by geography, ethnicity, age, and lifestyle factors influenced by cultural aspects.

The amino acids synthesized by the intestinal microbiota have been correlated with metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance; both are high incidence conditions in Mexico. However, the knowledge of the relationship of fecal amino acids with the development of both diseases in the Mexican population is scarce. The clinical study was descriptive; the study was carried out in the Antiguo Civil Hospital of Guadalajara.

January 2022

Department of Genomic Medicine in Hepatology, Civil Hospital of Guadalajara, "Fray Antonio Alcalde," Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico; Health Sciences Center, University of Guadalajara, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Viral hepatitis poses a significant health challenge globally, particularly affecting low-income individuals, and this study focused on its prevalence, along with HIV and liver damage, in a public hospital in West Mexico.
  • Through a retrospective analysis of over 10,000 patients, the study found that 3.9% had hepatitis C, 1.0% had hepatitis B, and 2.9% had HIV, with many patients exhibiting abnormal liver enzyme levels.
  • The study concluded that there is a high rate of viral infections and liver fibrosis among these populations, highlighting the need for ongoing testing and early intervention strategies to reduce the disease burden.

Dietary, Cultural, and Pathogens-Related Selective Pressures Shaped Differential Adaptive Evolution among Native Mexican Populations.

Mol Biol Evol

January 2022

Laboratory of Molecular Anthropology & Centre for Genome Biology, Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences (BiGeA), University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy.

Native American genetic ancestry has been remarkably implicated with increased risk of diverse health issues in several Mexican populations, especially in relation to the dramatic changes in environmental, dietary, and cultural settings they have recently undergone. In particular, the effects of these ecological transitions and Westernization of lifestyles have been investigated so far predominantly on Mestizo individuals. Nevertheless, indigenous groups, rather than admixed Mexicans, have plausibly retained the highest proportions of genetic components shaped by natural selection in response to the ancient milieu experienced by Mexican ancestors during their pre-Columbian evolutionary history.

MTHFR C677T and A1298C variants in Mexican Mestizo infants with neural tube defects from Western Mexico.

Congenit Anom (Kyoto)

September 2021

Center for Registry and Research in Congenital Anomalies (CRIAC), Service of Genetics and Cytogenetics Unit, Pediatrics Division, "Dr. Juan I. Menchaca", Civil Hospital of Guadalajara, Guadalajara, Mexico.

Our study investigated the role of MTHFR C677T and A1298C variants in infants with neural tube defects (NTDs) from western Mexico. Using TaqMan allelic discrimination assay, we genotyped 101 live-born patients with NTDs (cases) and 247 controls. Our findings do not support that homozygosity or heterozygosity for the variants C677T and A1298C in the MTHFR gene are associated with NTDs in infants.
