The potential antimicrobial and antibiofouling properties of previously synthesized PEG/NiPAAm interpenetrated polymer networks (IPNs) were investigated against three of the most common bacteria (, , and ). The main goal was to evaluate the material's biocompatibility and determine its potential use as an antifouling component in medical devices. This was intended to provide an alternative option that avoids drug usage as the primary treatment, thus contributing to the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

We present a next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) global QCD analysis of the proton's helicity parton distribution functions, the first of its kind. To obtain the distributions, we use data for longitudinal spin asymmetries in inclusive and semi-inclusive lepton-nucleon scattering as well as in weak-boson and hadron or jet production in proton-proton scattering. We analyze the data using QCD perturbation theory at NNLO accuracy, employing approximations provided by the threshold resummation formalism in cases where full NNLO results for partonic hard-scattering functions are not readily available.

With ongoing global warming, increasing water deficits promote physiological stress on forest ecosystems with negative impacts on tree growth, vitality, and survival. How individual tree species will react to increased drought stress is therefore a key research question to address for carbon accounting and the development of climate change mitigation strategies. Recent tree-ring studies have shown that trees at higher latitudes will benefit from warmer temperatures, yet this is likely highly species-dependent and less well-known for more temperate tree species.

Background: Patients with COVID-19 may experience a persistent increase in the blood urea nitrogen over creatinine ratio (PI-BUN/Cr). Its elevation could reflect multiple underlying pathophysiological processes beyond prerenal injury but also warrants nuanced interpretation due to its complex interplay with various factors, underscoring the importance of investigating its effects on mortality and acute kidney injury in this population.
Methods: We analized a retrospective and longitudinal cohort of patients admitted to a single center in Mexico City for patients with severe COVID-19.

This study investigates the hydrogeochemical characteristics and water quality of the Puebla Valley aquifer, a volcano-sedimentary system predominantly influenced by water-rock interactions and ion exchange processes. The research assesses the suitability of groundwater for agricultural irrigation by applying various water quality indices, including salinity and sodicity indices and Wilcox diagrams and USSL. Seventy-one water samples were analyzed to determine key physicochemical parameters and dominant ion concentrations, revealing that the primary hydrogeochemical facies are HCO -Mg and HCO -Ca.

The synthesis of three novel curcumin derivative compounds, featuring aza-crown ether macrocycles of various sizes (aza-12-crown-4, aza-15-crown-5, and aza-18-crown-6), is described. The incorporation of these aza-crown macrocycles significantly enhances their water solubility, positioning them as groundbreaking instances of curcumin derivatives that are fully soluble in aqueous environments. These curcumin ligands (L1, L2, and L3) were then reacted with zinc acetate to afford the coordination metal complexes (L1-Zn, L2-Zn, and L3-Zn).

This paper analyses the optimal control of infectious disease propagation using a classic susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model characterised by permanent immunity and the absence of available vaccines. The control is performed over a time-dependent mean reproduction number, in order to minimise the cumulative number of ever-infected individuals (recovered), under different constraints. We consider constraints on non-pharmaceutical interventions ranging from partial lockdown to non-intervention, as well as the social and economic costs associated with such interventions, and the capacity limitations of intensive care units that limits the number of infected individuals to a maximum allowed value.

This work reports the synthesis of FeO (FeO) microparticles using the Pechini method and their use to remove microplastics from tap water. The analysis by electronic microscopy revealed that the FeO microparticles (FeMicroPs) have a porous structure and are formed by interconnected grains with sizes of 80-120 nm. In addition, the X-ray diffraction analysis pointed out that the FeMicroPs are composed of γ- FeO and α- FeO phases.
