A novel bifunctional magnetic sorbent with mercapto and amino groups and ion imprinting (MBII) was synthesized using a one-step aqueous sol-gel process for preconcentration and determination of Cd(II) ions. MBII was employed as a microcolumn (MC) filler in a flow-through system coupled to GFAAS. The magnetic properties of the solid allowed microcolumn magnetic solid-phase extraction (MCMSPE) to be performed by simply including a single circular magnet around the MC.

Singlet dioxygen has been widely applied in different disciplines such as medicine (photodynamic therapy or blood sterilization), remediation (wastewater treatment) or industrial processes (fine chemicals synthesis). Particularly, it can be conveniently generated by energy transfer between a photosensitizer's triplet state and triplet dioxygen upon irradiation with visible light. Among the best photosensitizers, substituted zinc(II) phthalocyanines are prominent due to their excellent photophysical properties, which can be tuned by structural modifications, such as halogen- and chalcogen-atom substitution.

In this paper we present the determination of ultratraces of cadmium ions in water by means of a minicolumn (MC) flow-through preconcentration system coupled with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The core of the system is a lab-made ion imprinted magnetic organosilica nanocomposite which is employed as filler of the MC for the selective retention of the analyte. In this case superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles were coated with an amine-functionalized shell and ion imprinted with Cd(II) by a simple sol-gel co-condensation method.

The study of the interaction of light with systems at high dye concentrations implies a great challenge because several factors, such as emission reabsorption, dye aggregation, and energy trapping, hinder rationalization and interpretation of the involved photophysical processes. Space constraints induce dye interaction even in the absence of ground state stabilization of dimers and oligomers. At distances on the order of 1 nm, statistical energy traps are usually observed.

As an alternative approach to the well known Ca(ii)-alginate encapsulation process within silica hydrogels, proton-driven alginate gelation was investigated in order to establish its capacity as a culture carrier, both isolated and embedded in an inorganic matrix. Control over the velocity of the proton-gelation front allows the formation of a hydrogel shell while the core remains liquid, allowing bacteria and microalgae to survive the strongly acidic encapsulation process. Once inside the inorganic host, synthesized by a sol-gel process, the capsules spontaneously redissolve without the aid of external complexing agents.

Free standing hierarchical bioglass scaffolds were prepared by the ISISA (ice-segregation-induced self-assembly) method. Commercial low-cost precursors such as Ludox® HS-40 and cow milk were employed as the source of SiO and biominerals (Ca(ii), P(v), Na(i) and K(i)), respectively. Then, in a single macroscopic piece, three levels of porosity coexist due to the simultaneous templating effect of ice (macropores), milk (50-200 nm mesopores) and the voids left between preformed Ludox® nano building blocks (2-5 nm mesopores).

This study deals with the structure of the digestive gland of the carnivorous gastropod Adelomelon beckii in Mar del Plata area (Argentina) and discusses the function of its cell types and compare with other gastropods. According to histological and transmission electron microscopy observations the epithelium is composed of two types of cells that are subject to cyclical changes, involving three phases: absorption, digestion and fragmentation. The majority of the cells, called digestive cells, have a basal nucleus with a cytoplasm filled by spherical digestive vesicles in different stages.

Environmental temperature influences physiology and behavior in animals in general and is particularly determinant in ectotherms. Not least because temperature defines metabolism and body temperature, muscle activity in insects also strongly depends on this factor. Here, we analyzed how environmental temperature influences the dynamics of ingestion due to its effect on the sucking pump muscles in the nectivorous ants Camponotus mus.

Acropsopilio chilensis Silvestri, 1904 (Eupnoi: Caddidae: Acropsopilioninae), is recorded for Robinson Crusoe Island, Chile. This is the first harvestman species recorded for the Juan Fernández Archipelago and also the first extra-continental record for this species. During the comparison with continental co-specific specimens, some previously unknown, remarkable morphological characteristics were discovered, among them: the absence of ovipositor seminal receptacles and tracheal system, small and probably imperforate spiracles and the presence of a subdistal spiny structure, maybe a stylus, in the major branch of the penis.

In light of the multiple sex chromosome systems observed in howler monkeys (Alouatta Lacépède, 1799) a combined cladistic analysis using chromosomal and molecular characters was applied to discuss the possible origin of these systems. Mesoamerican and South American howlers were karyologically compared. FISH analysis using the chromosome painting probes for the #3 and #15 human chromosomes was applied to corroborate the homeology of the sexual systems.

Urban ants are a worldwide critical household pests, and efforts to control them usually involve the use of alimentary baits containing slow-acting insecticides. Feeding behaviour is a complex functional system that relies on external signals and the physiological state of the animal. This is also the case in ants as they vary their feeding behaviour according to food characteristics, environmental conditions and - as they are social insects - to the colony's requirements. The biogenic amine serotonin (5-HT) was shown to be involved in the control and modulation of many actions and processes related to feeding in both vertebrates and invertebrates.

We assessed the indirect response of longevity in lines selected for wing length (WL) and developmental time (DT). Longevity in selection lines was compared to laboratory control lines and the offspring of recently collected females. Junin virus (JUNV), the causative agent of Argentine haemorrhagic fever, is a human pathogen that naturally enters the body through the epithelial cells of the respiratory and digestive tracts. The interaction of JUNV with two types of polarized epithelial cultures, Vero C1008 and A549, was investigated. Radioactive virus-binding assays showed that JUNV infects polarized lines preferentially through the apical surface.

An interconnected Au nanoparticle arrangement is obtained by electrodeposition from Au(III) soluble complexes within the pore system of block-copolymer templated mesoporous titania films. The aim of this work was to study the growth and production of ligninolytic enzymes by Fomes sclerodermeus using a natural medium based on wheat bran as the principal substrate in a solid-state fermentation.
