Members of the genus Nicoll, 1907 include endoparasites of aquatic birds and mammals, distributed worldwide. Adult specimens were collected from the intestines of three bird species (the great black hawks, Gmelin; laughing gull, Linnaeus; and the willet, Gmelin) in three localities along the Gulf of Mexico. were sequenced for the large subunit (LSU) from nuclear rDNA, and the new sequences were aligned with other microphalloid sequences available in GenBank.

We present a simple method to evaluate the curved surface of a plano-convex aspheric lens using an incoherent light source. We implement an exact ray trace to obtain analytical expressions for designing a set of geometric objects, placed within a plane, to produce by refraction a regular array of either circles or straight lines in the plane of detection when the optical system under test works in accordance with the nominal design. An innovative geometrical test is implemented to calibrate the position of each element involved in the measurement system.

Departamento de Materiales de Baja Dimensionalidad, Instituto de Investigaciones en Materiales Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, C.P. 04510, Mexico City, México.

We conducted a comprehensive physicochemical analysis of one-dimensional ZnO nanowires (1DZnO), incorporating anti-CYFRA 21-1 immobilization to promote fast optical biomarker detection up to 10 ng ml. This study highlights the effectiveness of proof-of-concept 1DZnO nanoplatforms for rapid cancer biomarker detection by examining the nanoscale integration of 1DZnO with these bioreceptors to deliver reliable photoluminescent output signals. The urgent need for swift and accurate prognoses in healthcare settings drives the rise of sensitive biosensing nanoplatforms for cancer detection, which has benefited from biomarker identification.

Discovering and documenting Acari: the first twenty years in Zootaxa.

Zootaxa

May 2021

Australian National Insect Collection, CSIRO, GPO Box 1700, Canberra ACT 2601, Australia,.

Acari represent the most diverse group within the arachnids with some 60,000 described species. It is generally believed that most species of mites are waiting to be discovered and described. Zootaxa was the most important journal for mite taxonomy during the last twenty years (2001 to 2020).

Thirty sediment samples from four different beaches along Bahia Solano and Nuquí (Department of Chocó) of eastern Colombia, with tourism and gold mining activities, were analysed to estimate the concentrations of fourteen different acid leachable metals. Metal distribution patterns showed elevated concentrations of Co, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn compared with the upper continental crust values. Calculation of geochemical indices confirmed that the enrichment is due to periodic gold mining activities (severe to extremely severe enrichment of Cu, Zn, V, Co, Cr and Pb) along with natural (geological) contributions (minor and moderate enrichment of Ca, Mg, Fe, Ti, Mn and Li).

A baseline study on metal concentrations in sediments was initiated from the Sodwana Bay and St. Lucia, adjacent to marine protected areas (MPAs) of South Africa. They were analysed to identify the acid leachable metal (ALM) (Fe, Mg, Mn, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Co, Pb, Cd, Zn and Hg) concentration pattern.

South Durban basin of South Africa has witnessed tremendous urban, industrial expansion and mass tourism impacts exerting significant pressure over marine environments. 43 sediment samples from 7 different beaches (Bluff beach; Ansteys beach; Brighton beach; Cutting beach; Isipingo beach; Tiger Rocks beach; Amanzimtoti beach) were analyzed for acid leachable metals (ALMs) Fe, Mg, Mn, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Co, Pb, Cd, Zn and Hg. The metal concentrations found in all the beaches were higher than the background reference values (avg.

August 2015

Laboratorio de Acarologia, Departamento de Biología Comparada; Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Avenida Universidad 3000, Ciudad Universitaria. C. P. 04510. Distrito Federal, México.

A checklist of 44 species of sucking lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Anoplura) recorded in Mexico, belonging to nine genera in six families is given, together with a list of the 63 species of Mexican wild mammal hosts with which they are associated. Summaries of the known geographical records and host relationships for each louse species are presented for each Mexican state. Data were compiled from published and original records, including three new locality records from the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero.

[Species of Malassezia associated with various dermatoses and healthy skin in the Mexican population].

Rev Iberoam Micol

December 2003

Laboratorio de Micología Médica, Departamento de Microbiología y Parasitología, Facultad de Medicina, UNAM, Ciudad Universitaria C.P. 04510, México, D.F., Mexico.

At the present, eight Malassezia species have been described and their distribution in normal skin and in several skin diseases appears variable. The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency and distribution of Malassezia species in patients with psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and pityriasis versicolor attended in a Hospital from Mexico City, in addition to a healthy individual group. Scales of abnormal and healthy skin were grown in modified Dixon agar and the species identification was performed by macroscopic and microscopic features; by catalase and urease reaction; growth at 32, 37 and 40 degrees C; and Tween 20, 40, 60 and 80 assimilation.
