Genomics is an invaluable tool for conservation, particularly for endangered species impacted by wildlife trafficking. This study uses genomic data to provide new insights to aid conservation and management of endangered species, using as a case study the Yellow cardinal (), a bird endemic to southern South America severely affected by illegal trade and the transformation of its natural habitat. We explore population structure within the Yellow cardinal, delimiting management units and describing connectivity among them.

Arsenic is a well-known toxic substance, widely distributed, whereas vanadium is a pollutant of emerging interest. Both have been found to correlate positively in groundwaters, thus concern arises on the effect of these pollutants on crops, if such waters are used for irrigation. We conducted a study on the effect of aging with a typical crop soil mimicking soils initially irrigated with water containing As and V.

Specialized or secondary metabolites are small molecules of biological origin, often showing potent biological activities with applications in agriculture, engineering and medicine. Usually, the biosynthesis of these natural products is governed by sets of co-regulated and physically clustered genes known as biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). To share information about BGCs in a standardized and machine-readable way, the Minimum Information about a Biosynthetic Gene cluster (MIBiG) data standard and repository was initiated in 2015.

Gradually, new records were added in other northeastern states up to the state of Minas Gerais, in the Southeast region of the country. The species was even found south of Minas Gerais in the state of São Paulo, but not in wild conditions, but in rearing tanks associated with aquaculture practices.

Leather industry is traditionally characterized by the use of large amounts of chemical agents, some of which are toxic to human health and the environment. However, during the last years, many efforts have been made with the aim of successfully implement enzymes as agents for different leather production stages. The lipopeptides produced by the Bacillus spp.

A series of 1,5-disubstituted tetrazole-indole hybrids were synthesized via a high-order multicomponent reaction consisting of an Ugi-azide/Pd/Cu-catalyzed hetero-annulation cascade sequence. This operationally simple one-pot protocol allowed high bond-forming efficiency and creating six new bonds (two C-C, three C-N, and one N-N). Additionally, the products were evaluated against breast cancer MCF-7 cells, finding moderate activity in the compounds substituted with fluorine and chlorine.

In recent years, the rapid alkalinization factor (RALF) family of cysteine-rich peptides has been reported to be crucial for several plant signaling mechanisms, including cell growth, plant immunity and fertilization. RALF4 and RALF19 (RALF4/19) pollen peptides redundantly regulate the pollen tube integrity and growth through binding to their receptors ANXUR1/2 (ANX1/2) and Buddha's Paper Seal 1 and 2 (BUPS1/2), members of the RLK1-like (CrRLK1L) family, and, thus, are essential for plant fertilization. However, the signaling mechanisms at the cellular level that follow these binding events remain unclear.

Although sexual learning can be a key process in the reproductive success of animals, research focused on the experience-dependent modulation of courtship in insects is scarce. In kissing bugs, the behavioural steps implicated in mating have been exhaustively studied, but not the involvement of learning in them. Our objective was to determine whether the sexual behaviour of Rhodnius prolixus could be modulated by experience.

In this study, we present results from path integral molecular dynamics simulations that describe the characteristics of the quantum spatial delocalizations of protons participating in OH bonds in (MeOH)2H+ and in (MeOH)3H+. The characterization was carried out by examining the overall structures of the corresponding isomorphic polymers. To introduce full flexibility in the force treatment, we have adopted a neural network fitting procedure based on second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory predictions.

Juveniles of interspecific avian brood parasites need to locate and recognize conspecifics to continue their life cycle after being reared by individuals of another species. However, little is known about the recognition mechanisms and cues involved in this critical stage of their lives. It has been proposed that adult parasites could show some kind of parental behavior by actively searching and interacting with conspecific young, which in turn could serve the juveniles to learn and/or reinforce the learning of conspecific characteristics.

Background: There is a need for unified guidance in the management of acneiform rash induced by epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRi) among dermatologists.
Objective: To establish unified international guidelines for the management of acneiform rash caused by EGFR inhibitors, based on an experts' Delphi consensus.
Methods: The initiative was led by five members of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Task Force 'Dermatology for Cancer Patients' who developed a questionnaire that was circulated to a group of 32 supportive oncodermatology experts in Europe, Canada, Argentina, the US States and Asia.

Hassalstrongylus Durette-Desset, 1971 (Nematoda: Heligmonellidae), includes 19 species that are distributed from the southwestern United States to central-western Argentina. Hassalstrongylus aduncus is a parasitic nematode of rodents from the subfamilies Arvicolinae, Murinae, and Sigmodontinae, and has been recorded from southern Virginia and Oklahoma to Costa Rica. This species was described by Chandler in 1932; the morphology of the synlophe was not included.

Vanadium (V) is a metal that can enter the environment through natural routes or anthropogenic activity. In the atmosphere, V is present as V oxides, among which vanadium(III) oxide (VO) stands out. Cytogenetic studies have shown that VO is genotoxic and cytostatic and induces DNA damage; however, the molecular mechanisms leading to these effects have not been fully explored.

The virus is the smallest known replicative unit, usually in nanometer-range sizes. The most simple and sensitive detection assay involves molecular amplification of nucleic acids. This work shows a novel, straightforward detection based on the interaction of viral particles with fluorescent nanoconstructs without using enzymatic amplification, washing or separation steps.

The Li ion mobility through the porous cathode is a critical aspect in the development of commercial Li-air batteries. The bulk transport properties of lithium salts in organic solvents are not reliable parameters for the design of this type of battery since confinement could significantly modify the transport properties, especially when pore diameters are below 10 nm. In this work, we studied the effect of the carbon mesostructure and surface charge on the diffusion of LiTf and LiTFSI salts dissolved in diglyme, typical electrolytes for lithium-air batteries.

Detailed osteological descriptions of the craniomandibular complex of passerine birds are lacking for most species, limiting our understanding of their diversity and evolution. Cowbirds (genus Molothrus) are a small but widespread group of New World nine-primaried songbirds, well-known for their unique brooding parasitic behavior. However, detailed osteological data for cowbirds and other Icteridae are currently scarce and several features of their skulls remain undescribed or poorly known.

This research aimed to develop natural plant systems to serve as biological sentinels for the detection of organophosphate pesticides in the environment. The working hypothesis was that the presence of the pesticide in the environment caused changes in the content of pigments and in the photosynthetic functioning of the plant, which could be evaluated non-destructively through the analysis of reflected light and emitted fluorescence. The objective of the research was to furnish in vivo indicators derived from spectroscopic parameters, serving as early alert signals for the presence of organophosphates in the environment.

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is an important protein used for bovine ovarian hyperstimulation in multiple ovulation and embryo transfer technology (MOET). Several attempts to produce bovine FSH (bFSH) in recombinant systems have been reported, nonetheless, up to date, the most commonly used products are partially purified preparations derived from porcine or ovine (pFSH or oFSH) pituitaries. Here we describe the development of a biotechnology process to produce a novel, hyperglycosylated, long-acting recombinant bFSH (LA-rbFSH) by fusing copies of a highly O-glycosylated peptide.
