Aim: We investigated the behavior of circulating endothelial cells (CEC) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) receiving sorafenib, and whether CEC levels were associated with time to progression (TTP).
Materials & Methods: CECs in advanced HCC patients receiving sorafenib were counted at baseline and every 4 weeks.
Results: Twenty four HCC patients were enrolled in the study.

Aims And Background: The aggressiveness of cancer care near the end of life and the consumption of opioids are potential indicators of quality of care in palliative and end-of-life settings. The purpose of this article is to present a retrospective analysis regarding these themes and the adopted procedures to improve quality of care.
Methods: We evaluated all cancer patients treated and deceased during 2008 and considered those who died and received any antiblastic therapy within 14 and 30 days prior to death.

Cyclin D3 immunohistochemical expression was investigated in normal, reactive, and neoplastic human embryonal and adult tissues. In the fetus, cyclin D3 was expressed in selected developmental phases of a limited number of cell systems. In normal adult tissues, cyclin D3 showed two patterns of distribution: in lymphoid tissues it was expressed in proliferative compartments, while in most other tissues it was expressed by terminally differentiated/quiescent cells.

Immunohistochemistry is a powerful diagnostic adjunct in the differential diagnosis between malignant mesothelioma (especially of the epithelial type) and adenocarcinoma metastatic to the serous membranes. Most of the immunological probes commonly used, however, recognize antigens expressed by the epithelial malignancies and absent from mesothelial cells and mesotheliomas. Probes suitable for the positive identification of mesotheliomas are comparatively scarce and much less commonly used because of their reduced sensitivity and specificity, their unsuitability for staining routinely fixed and embedded tissues, or their lack of commercial availability.

The immunoreactivity of p21 was evaluated in normal mucosa and in adenomas and adenocarcinomas of the human large bowel. In normal mucosa, p21 immunoreactivity was seen in the superficial third of the crypts (maturation compartment) and in surface (terminally differentiated) epithelium, and was mutually exclusive with Ki67/MIB1 reactivity. These data show that p21 expression is inversely related to proliferation and directly related to terminal differentiation.

Elevated plasma levels of fibrinogen, factor VII coagulant activity (F VIIc), and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) have been reported to be strictly associated with thrombotic events and are considered to be important risk markers of atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease. Therefore, we evaluated in 15 patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) the plasma levels of these coagulation factors, basal insulin values, and the lipid pattern in comparison with 33 hemodialysis (HD) patients and 59 healthy subjects. In CAPD the total cholesterol and triglyceride results were significantly increased, but no difference was found in HDL cholesterol.
