Background: Understanding the neural basis of behavior requires insight into how different brain systems coordinate with each other. Existing connectomes for various species have highlighted brain systems essential to various aspects of behavior, yet their application to complex learned behaviors remains limited. Research on vocal learning in songbirds has extensively focused on the vocal control network, though recent work implicates a variety of circuits in contributing to important aspects of vocal behavior.

Purpose: Cancer and cancer treatment have been associated with cognitive changes in survivorship, with forgetfulness and distractibility reported years post-treatment. Deficits in attention control may explain these difficulties. We assessed breast cancer survivors using a primary measure of attention control, the saccade/antisaccade task, to assess the effects of diagnosis and treatment.

A prevailing belief among researchers is that burnout is a work-specific syndrome induced by intractable job stress. The validity of this belief, however, remains unclear. This cross-sectional study compared burnout with two general conditions, nonspecific psychological distress (NSPD) and exhaustion, in terms of (a) causal attributions to work and (b) associations with 11 job variables (e.

Motivated by the recent experimental developments in van der Waals heterostructures, we investigate the emergent magnetism in Mott insulator-semimetal moiré superlattices by deriving effective spin models and exploring their phase diagram by Monte Carlo simulations. Our analysis indicates that the stacking-dependent interlayer Kondo interaction can give rise to different types of magnetic order, forming domains within the moiré unit cell. In particular, we find that the AB (AA) stacking regions tend to order (anti)ferromagnetically for an extended range of parameters.

Humans rely on predictive and integrative mechanisms during visual processing to efficiently resolve incomplete or ambiguous sensory signals. Although initial low-level sensory data are conveyed by feedforward connections, feedback connections are believed to shape sensory processing through automatic conveyance of statistical probabilities based on prior exposure to stimulus configurations. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show biases in stimulus processing toward parts rather than wholes, suggesting their sensory processing may be less shaped by statistical predictions acquired through prior exposure to global stimulus properties.

Introduction: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) are increasingly used for major depressive disorder (MDD). Most tDCS and rTMS studies target the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, either with or without neuronavigation. We examined the effect of rTMS and tDCS, and the added value of neuronavigation in the treatment of MDD.

For decades, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) has been regarded as the "gold standard" for the assessment of burnout. The present paper demonstrates that the MBI fails to measure the construct it is purported to measure. On a deeper level, the problems affecting the MBI question the very idea of burnout.

Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood microvessels, is a necessary physiological process for tissue generation and repair. Sufficient blood supply to the tissue is dependent on microvascular density, while the material exchange between the circulating blood and the surrounding tissue is controlled by microvascular permeability. We thus begin this article by reviewing the key signaling factors, particularly vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which regulates both angiogenesis and microvascular permeability.

Background: Hypertension is a global issue that is projected to worsen with increasingly obese populations. The central nervous system including the parts of the cortex plays a key role in hemodynamic stability and homeostatic control of blood pressure (BP), making them critical components in understanding and investigating the neural control of BP. This study investigated the effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) associated with aerobic physical exercise on BP and heart rate variability in hypertensive patients.

Background: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a globally prevalent pathogen, with outbreaks occurring in tropical regions. Chronic pain is the main symptom reported and is associated with decreased mobility and disability. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is emerging as a new therapeutic tool for chronic arthralgia.

The mechanical properties of CuTi alloys have been characterized extensively through experimental studies. However, a detailed understanding of why the strength of Cu increases after a small fraction of Ti atoms are added to the alloy is still missing. In this work, we address this question using density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with the modified embedded atom method (MEAM) interatomic potentials.

This study examined the psychometric and structural properties of the Polish and Ukrainian versions of the Occupational Depression Inventory (ODI). We relied on two samples of Polish employees (N = 526, 47% female; N = 164, 64% female) and one sample of Ukrainian employees (N = 372, 73% female). In all samples, the ODI exhibited essential unidimensionality and high total-score reliability (e.

The disruption of endothelial heparan sulfate (HS) is an early event in tumor cell metastasis across vascular barriers, and the reinforcement of endothelial HS reduces tumor cell adhesion to endothelium. Our recent study showed that while vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) greatly reduces HS at an in vitro blood-brain barrier (BBB) formed by human cerebral microvascular endothelial cells (hCMECs), it significantly enhances HS on a breast cancer cell, MDA-MB-231 (MB231). Here, we tested that this differential effect of VEGF on the HS favors MB231 adhesion and transmigration.

The concept of mentalized affectivity (MA) encompasses the dimensions of identifying, processing, and expressing emotions and describes the process of making sense of and reevaluating one's affects in light of autobiographical memory. This construct was developed within the theoretical framework of mentalization and, due to its interpersonal nature, added further complexity to the emotion regulation construct. This research aimed to examine the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Brief-Mentalized Affectivity Scale for adolescents (B-MAS-A) on an Italian sample of young people (aged 13-19 years).

Hypothesis The thermocapillary migration of a spherical drop with a stagnant cap in the presence of a constant applied temperature gradient can be strongly affected by the finite thermal conductivity of the stagnant cap. Numerics The heat conduction of the stagnant cap is analytically modeled. The effects of the additional interfacial stresses generated by the disturbances to the local temperature field due to the presence of the cap at the fluid-fluid interface and the corresponding velocity of migration of the drop are evaluated by solving for the temperature and hydrodynamic field equations in and around the drop.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) encompasses treatment strategies for diabetes, which is referred to as "Consumptive Thirsty" syndrome. Recently, there has been discovery regarding the mapping between TCM and signaling molecules, which has revealed a remarkable consistency between TCM and modern medicine from a molecular perspective. In this manuscript, we have summarized the etiology and treatment strategies for diabetes in TCM and have examined these strategies in the context of molecular mechanisms.

This study reports on the first use of the optical Kerr effect (OKE) in breast cancer tissue. This proposed optical biopsy method utilizes a Femtosecond Optical Kerr Gate to detect changes in dielectric relaxation and conductivity created by a cancerous infection. Here, the temporal behavior of the OKE is tracked in normal and cancerous samples of human and mouse breast.

To boost efficient energy transitions, alternatives to expensive and unsustainable noble metal-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are needed. Having this in mind, carbon black - Black Pearls 2000 (BP) was enriched in active nitrogen-containing centers, including single-atom Fe-N sites surrounded by Fe nanoclusters, through a synthesis methodology employing only broadly available precursors. The methodical approach taken to optimize the synthesis conditions highlighted the importance of (1) a proper choice of the Fe precursor; (2) melamine as an N source to limit the formation of magnetite crystals and modulate the charge density nearby the active sites, and glucose to chelate/isolate Fe atoms and thus allow the Fe-N coordination to be established, with a limiting formation of Fe clusters; and (3) a careful dosing of the Fe load.
