Symptoms caused by a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) overdose are often mild and can be managed with supportive care and close monitoring, even when complicated by serotonin syndrome. There are limited pharmacokinetic data regarding massive overdoses of paroxetine, and the severity of an SSRI overdose is likely to be underestimated. We describe a fatal case of severe serotonin syndrome and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) following an overdose of controlled-release paroxetine.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the link between lymphovascular invasion (LVI) and oncological outcomes in prostate cancer patients who underwent robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).
  • Out of 3195 patients, 2608 met the criteria, with 11.9% experiencing biochemical recurrence (BCR), showing that LVI adversely affects BCR-free survival and metastasis-free survival in certain patient groups.
  • The findings indicate that LVI is a significant independent prognostic factor for recurrence and metastasis, especially in patients with locally advanced disease, highlighting the need for close monitoring in these cases.

Achondroplasia (ACH) is the most common form of skeletal dysplasia characterized by a rhizomelic short stature. Radiological skeletal findings in pediatric and adult patients with ACH include short long bones, a relatively longer fibula compared to the tibia, a narrow lumbar interpedicular distance, and a hypoplastic iliac wing. Nonetheless, the characteristics of skeletal growth during the neonatal and infantile periods have scarcely been explored.

Objective: Aneurysm wall inflammation is associated with lesion instability in unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs). However, most UIAs remain unruptured during lifelong follow-ups because of simultaneous protective remodeling against the inflammatory response. The protective effects of osteoprotegerin (OPG) in intracranial and abdominal aortic aneurysms have been suggested using rodent models; however, the role of this protein in UIAs in humans remains unclear.

Eur Radiol

July 2024

Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, UMC Utrecht Brain Center, Utrecht University, University Medical Center Utrecht, room number G3-201, Postbox 85500, 3508, Utrecht, GA, The Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • In patients with an unruptured brain bulge (called an aneurysm), using a special dye (gadolinium) to check the wall can tell us if it might grow or burst.
  • Researchers studied many patients to see if the dye could predict these issues, taking into account the size of the aneurysm.
  • They found that while the dye shows some connection with growth or rupture, it doesn’t really help if you already know the size of the aneurysm, so doctors might not need to use it for short-term predictions.
