Kinetic approach for the appropriate selection of indigenous limestones for acid mine drainage treatment with passive systems.

Acid mine drainage treatments using limestones have been widely reported in the literature; however, additional studies are needed to select the most effective limestone type based on an adequate characterization and in consideration of the kinetics of the rock's reaction upon exposure to high iron concentrations. In this study, with the aim to select the most appropriate limestone to use in a passive treatment system, the regular characterization (calcium carbonate analysis, determination of specific superficial area, and porosity) was complemented with a heterogeneous kinetic analysis of limestone dissolution. The physico-chemical conditions of high acidity and a high Fe concentration were similar to those measured in leachates from the "Compañía Minera Zimapán" (CMZ) tailings impoundment located in a historical Mexican mining zone.

Caves are a useful system for testing evolutionary and biogeographic hypotheses, as they are isolated, and their environmental conditions have resulted in adaptive selection across different taxa. Although in recent years many more cave species have been discovered, cave-dwelling members of the class Ophiuroidea (brittle stars) remain scarce. The reticular thalamic nucleus (RTn) controls the overall activity of thalamo-cortical neurons information processing. GABAergic RTn neurons have one of the highest densities of D4-type dopamine receptors in subcortical structures. Esterases and lipases are lipolytic enzymes that catalyse the hydrolysis of triacylglycerols, Determination of lipolysis on agar plates is a simple approach to determine lipase or esterase action, but visual evaluation of lipolysis is frequently difficult in practice. Therefore, the aim of this work was to improve the efficiency of lipolysis visualization in tributyrin agar (mTBA) by adding calcium and/or magnesium ions in the screening of lipolytic microbial strains. Lipolytic activity was evaluated in mTBA using the well diffusion technique, where a clear zone around the inoculated wells indicated lipid hydrolysis.

Chihuahua cheese is a traditional cheese produced in Northwest Mexico that is consumed shortly after production. Cheeses prepared during autumn, winter and summer were collected from five dairies, and analyzed to determine seasonal influence on proximate analysis, texture profile and the microbiological dynamic during a ripening period of 270 days. Coliforms, coagulase-positive staphylococci, molds, yeast, as well as presumptive mesophilic lactobacilli, thermophilic lactobacilli, lactococci, thermophilic cocci and enterococci, were enumerated by plate count on selective agar.

A geochemical-environmental mapping was carried for a low polluted forest in North-western Mexico (Santiago Papasquiaro mining area), as part of the North American forests accounting for environmental behavior of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) in soil and tree components (stem wood and aciculums). Background: In order to develop new larvicidal agents derived from phytochemicals, the larvicidal activity of fifty molecules that are constituent of essential oils was evaluated against Culex quinquefasciatus Say. An efficient and alternative synthesis of exo-imidazolidin-2-one dienes is described. A condensation reaction was carried out with bis-imino derivatives, diacetyl, and triphosgene, affording symmetrically N, N-disubstituted dienes. The use of alkyl methyl α-diketones led to the formation of nonsymmetrical dienes, which underwent isomerization to provide more stable inner-outer-ring dienes under Lewis acid conditions.

Hybrid bionanocomposites based on cellulose matrix, with silica nanoparticles as reinforcers, were prepared by one-pot synthesis of cellulose surface modified by solvent exchange method to keep the biopolymer net void for hosting inorganic nanoparticles. Neither expensive inorganic-particle precursors nor crosslinker agents or catalysts were used for effective dispersion of reinforcer concentration up to 50 wt %. Scanning electron microscopy of the nanocomposites shows homogeneous dispersion of reinforcers in the surface modified cellulose matrix.

We explored in detail the ordered nanostructures and the ternary phase diagram of the polystyrene-polybutadiene-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PS-PB-PtBMA) triblock copolymer via dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations and coarse-grained models. The mesoscopic simulations show that the PS-PB-PtBMA copolymer in the bulk state can generate eight equilibrium phase regions with well-defined morphologies such as core-shell variations of spheres, cylinders, perforated layers, lamellar, gyroid, as well as cylinder-in-lamella, spheres-in-lamella, and cylinders in hexagonal lattice. The ordered phases exhibit high dependence on the chemical nature and volume fraction, thus portraying specific composition regions with high thermodynamic stability over a ternary phase diagram.

In this work, a comparative study between spray drying (SD) of fresh egg by either maltodextrin (MD) or nopal-mucilage (MN) as stabilizing vectors was made. The powders obtained were characterized for drying performance, moisture content, chemical proximate analysis, thermal analysis (TGA), chemical composition (FTIR), microscopy (SEM) and rheology (viscoelasticity and steady state simple shear viscosity). Infrared analysis showed that MN has the effect of a thickening agent rather than an encapsulating one.
