The inclusion of natural ingredients to preserve meat and meat products has increased in recent years. This study evaluated rosemary (REO) and garlic essential oils (GEO) as well as chipotle pepper oleoresin (CPO), alone or in combination, as preservatives on beef hamburgers (BH). Six treatments were evaluated: T1 (control, without additives), T2 (GEO 1%), T3 (REO 1%), T4 (CPO 0.

The health benefits of physical activity (PA) are widely recognized; however, biological maturation contributions are a subject that has been little studied, which is why the aim of this study was to analyze the effect of a six-week training program at moderate-intensity on the muscular strength and aerobic capacity in children between nine and 13 years (13 ± 1.0 years) according to their maturation state. Twenty-six schoolchildren (15 girls) participated in a six-week physical exercise program based on aerobic/anaerobic capacity and coordination skills.

Cucumber fruit is rich in fiber, carbohydrates, protein, magnesium, iron, vitamin B, vitamin C, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and antioxidants. Agrochemical-based production of cucumber has tripled yields; however, excessive synthetic fertilization has caused problems in the accumulation of salts in the soil and has increased production costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of three strains of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on cucumber fruit growth and quality under greenhouse conditions.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been proposed as nanovehicles for drug or antigen delivery since they can be functionalized with different biomolecules. For this purpose, different types of molecules have been chemically bonded to CNTs; however, this method has low efficiency and generates solvent waste. lipase is an enzyme that, in an organic solvent, can bind a carboxylic to a hydroxyl group by esterase activity.

cheese is obtained from whey proteins. The production of this cheese is the most economical way to recover and concentrate whey proteins, which is why it is frequently made in some Latin American countries. Four cheese treatments were prepared with different concentrations and combinations of salts (sodium chloride and/or potassium chloride) and were conventionally or vacuum packed.

The microalga Chlorella sorokiniana and the microalgae growth-promoting bacteria (MGPB) Azospirillum brasilense have a mutualistic interaction that can begin within the first hours of co-incubation; however, the metabolites participating in this initial interaction are not yet identified. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used in the present study to characterize the metabolites exuded by two strains of C. sorokiniana (UTEX 2714 and UTEX 2805) and A.

In this article, the use of a square Hartmann screen test to measure the radius of curvature of a corneal topography calibration test sphere is presented. The proposed technique is based on the image formation principle by specular reflection on convex reflective surfaces. Applying an inverse Hartmann test, a de-magnified virtual image (Hartmanngram) is obtained; considering their own scaled reference screen plate, a zonal wavefront retrieval approach is used and the radius of curvature obtained.

The maximal fat oxidation rate (MFO) assessed during a graded exercise test is a remarkable physiological indicator associated with metabolic flexibility, body weight loss and endurance performance. The present review considers existing biomarkers related to MFO, highlighting the validity of maximal oxygen uptake and free fatty acid availability for predicting MFO in athletes and healthy individuals. Moreover, we emphasize the role of different key enzymes and structural proteins that regulate adipose tissue lipolysis (i.

The reticular thalamic nucleus (RTn) is a thin shell of GABAergic neurons that covers the dorsal thalamus that regulate the global activity of all thalamic nuclei. RTn controls the flow of information between thalamus and cerebral cortex since it receives glutamatergic information from collaterals of thalamo-cortical (TCs) and cortico-thalamic neurons. It also receives aminergic information from several brain stem nuclei, including serotonergic fibers originated in the dorsal raphe nucleus.

Fluorination of pharmaceutical agents has afforded crucial modifications to their pharmacological profiles, leading to important advances in medicinal chemistry. On the other hand, metallodrugs are considered to be valuable candidates in the treatment of several diseases, albeit with the caveat that they may exhibit pharmacological disadvantages, such as poor water solubility, low bioavailability and short circulating time. To surmount these limitations, two approaches have been developed: one based on the design of novel metallodrug-delivering carriers and the other based on optimizing the structure of the ligands bound to the metal center.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of high-intensity ultrasound as pre-treatment in the development of fermented whey and oat beverages. Oat malt was produced, incorporated into a whey formulation (35, 50 and 65% v/v of whey) and ultrasonicated (at 40 kHz and 11 W/cm) for 0, 3 or 10 min, prior to fermentation with 431. The treatments were identified as 35/65/0, 50/50/0, 65/35/0, 35/65/3, 50/50/3, 65/35/3, 35/65/10, 50/50/10 and 65/35/10, referring to the whey percentage, oat percentage, and the ultrasound time (min), respectively.

Rennet milk curds were prepared under 4 different temperature and acidity conditions. The development of different types of inter-protein chemical bonds (disulfide, hydrophobic, electrostatic, hydrogen, and calcium bridges) was monitored for 60 min after curd cutting. Hydrophobic inter-protein interactions originally present in casein micelles in milk were substituted by electrostatic, hydrogen, and calcium bonds throughout the curd curing period.

Ketoprofen is a commercially available drug sold as a racemic mixture that belongs to the family of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs known as profens. It has been demonstrated (in vitro) that ()-ketoprofen is around 160 times more potent than its enantiomer ()-ketoprofen, while accumulation of ()-ketoprofen can cause serious side effects, such as dyspepsia, gastrointestinal ulceration/bleeding, pain, salt and fluid retention, and hypertension. In this work, four commercially available lipases were systematically assessed.

During apple juice and cider-making processes, phenolic compounds undergo enzymatic oxidation. 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (CQA) is one of the major hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives and it is the preferential substrate for polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in apple juices. Consequently, CQA dehydrodimers (MW 706 Da) are among the main products resulting from CQA oxidation.

Multidrug-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes can be monitored as indicators of contamination in several environments. Mangroves are among the most productive ecosystems, and although they can be resilient to the action of climate phenomena, their equilibrium can be affected by anthropogenic activities. Regarding the presence and persistence of multidrug-resistant bacteria in mangroves, it is common to think that this ecosystem can function as a reservoir, which can disperse the antibiotic resistance capacity to human pathogens, or serve as a filter to eliminate drug-resistant genes.
