Research studies involving human subjects require collection of and reporting on demographic data related to race and ethnicity. However, existing practices lack standardized guidelines, leading to misrepresentation and biased inferences and conclusions for underrepresented populations in research studies. For instance, sometimes there is a misconception that self-reported racial or ethnic identity may be treated as a biological variable with underlying genetic implications, overlooking its role as a social construct reflecting lived experiences of specific populations.

Loss of Cdc42 causes abnormal optic cup morphogenesis and microphthalmia in mouse.

Front Cell Neurosci

November 2024

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Vanderbilt Eye Institute, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN, United States.

Congenital ocular malformations originate from defective morphogenesis during early eye development and cause 25% of childhood blindness. Formation of the eye is a multi-step, dynamic process; it involves evagination of the optic vesicle, followed by distal and ventral invagination, leading to the formation of a two-layered optic cup with a transient optic fissure. These tissue folding events require extensive changes in cell shape and tissue growth mediated by cytoskeleton mechanics and intercellular adhesion.

The continually high disease burden of influenza and the relatively low effectiveness of current influenza vaccines call for enhanced vaccine strategies. We previously generated unique S-HA1 pseudovirus nanoparticles (PVNPs) displaying the receptor binding HA1 antigens of the H7N9 subtype as an influenza vaccine candidate and characterized their features in biochemistry, biophysics, structure, and immune response. In this follow up study, we created new S-HA1 PVNPs displaying the HA1 antigens of other common influenza viruses, including two H1N1 strains, one H3N2 strain, and an influenza B virus, respectively.

Pulmonary MRI in Newborns and Children.

J Magn Reson Imaging

December 2024

POLARIS, Division of Clinical Medicine, School of Medicine & Population Health, Faculty of Health, The University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK.

Lung MRI is an important tool in the assessment and monitoring of pediatric and neonatal lung disorders. MRI can provide both similar and complementary image contrast to computed tomography for imaging the lung macrostructure, and beyond this, a number of techniques have been developed for imaging the key functions of the lungs, namely ventilation, perfusion, and gas exchange, through the use of free-breathing proton and hyperpolarized gas MRI. Here, we review the state-of-the-art in MRI methods that have found utility in pediatric and neonatal lung imaging, the structural and physiological information that can be gleaned from such images, and strategies that have been developed to deal with respiratory (and cardiac) motion, and other technological challenges.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the impacts of exposure to mixtures of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and brominated flame retardants (RBFRs) on childhood respiratory issues, particularly wheeze and hay fever, in a sample of 377 pregnant women and their infants.
  • - Researchers measured the levels of OPEs and RBFRs in house dust and urine at various prenatal and postnatal stages and used advanced statistical methods to analyze the results.
  • - Findings indicate that increased exposure to certain OPEs during pregnancy and infancy is linked to a higher risk of respiratory problems, suggesting that these chemical mixtures could be contributing factors to adverse respiratory outcomes in children.

Circulation

December 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. (E.D.S., Y.-C.T., B.E., A.B., O.M., S.S., A.S.H.).

Article Synopsis
  • - Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) was traditionally seen as caused by rare, high-risk single-gene changes, but new research indicates common low-risk variants (LowSVs) also play a significant role in the disease.
  • - In a study of over 6000 patients, 12 LowSVs were discovered, which are relatively common in the general population and more prevalent in HCM patients, suggesting they may influence disease severity and risk.
  • - While LowSVs alone are linked to a later onset of HCM and fewer complications, their presence alongside more severe genetic variants increases health risks significantly.
