Chiral molecules, a cornerstone of chemical sciences with applications ranging from pharmaceuticals to molecular electronics, come in mirror-image pairs called enantiomers. However, their synthesis often requires complex control of their molecular geometry. We propose a strategy called "electromagnetic enantiomers" for inducing chirality in molecules located within engineered nanocavities using light, eliminating the need for intricate molecular design.

Suppressing the photodegradation of organic electronic materials is crucial for their device applications. This study proposes a method to mitigate the photodegradation. With focus on the molecular design of triphenylamine derivatives commonly used in organic electronics, it was demonstrated that spin distributions of the derivatives would be a good quantum descriptor for predicting the photocyclization resistance to not give carbazole derivatives.

The zinc finger and BTB domain-containing 11 gene (zbtb11) is expressed in the Xenopus anterior neuroectoderm, but the molecular nature of the Zbtb11 protein during embryonic development remains to be elucidated. Here, we show the role of Zbtb11 in anterior patterning of the neuroectoderm and the cooperative action with the transcription factor Otx2. Both overexpression and knockdown of zbtb11 caused similar phenotypes: expanded expression of the posterior gene gbx2 in the neural plate, and later microcephaly with reduced eyes, suggesting that a proper level of zbtb11 expression is necessary for normal patterning of the neuroectoderm, including eye formation.

Asymmetric total synthesis of (-)-fasicularin was achieved in nine steps from a commercially available inexpensive material, by leveraging (1) an aryl radical-mediated, copper-catalyzed Sonogashira-type cross-coupling, (2) a Au-catalyzed tandem intramolecular alkyne hydroamination/iminium formation/intramolecular allylation, and (3) a tandem hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis/intramolecular reductive amination as key transformations.

Significance: The advancement of multichannel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has enabled measurements across a wide range of brain regions. This increase in multiplicity necessitates the control of family-wise errors in statistical hypothesis testing. To address this issue, the effective multiplicity ( ) method designed for channel-wise analysis, which considers the correlation between fNIRS channels, was developed.

Background: Although alcohol-intoxicated patients have difficulties evaluating their consciousness level and being transported prehospital, there is some evidence that the survival outcomes for alcohol-intoxicated patients with head injuries are better. The present study evaluated whether the survival and brain function outcomes in alcohol-intoxicated trauma patients with head injuries were better than those in sober patients using the Japan Trauma Data Bank (JTDB), a nationwide trauma registry in Japan.
Methods: The 17,823 patients with blunt trauma, including head injuries, who were registered in the JTDB database between January 2019 and December 2021 were retrospectively analyzed.

The electronic and vibrational cryogenic ion spectroscopy of protonated tryptophan (TrpH) and dopamine (DAH) complexed with methanol has been recorded. These two biological chromophores exhibit ultrafast photochemistry due to excited-state proton transfer (ESPT). We have established the relationship between the structure of the complexes and their photodynamics and compared them with recent results obtained in hydrated complexes.

An earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.5 (Mw) struck the northern Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, at 16:10 local time on January 1, 2024. This earthquake triggered a tsunami that propagated along the coastline of Ishikawa, Toyama, and Niigata Prefectures facing the Sea of Japan and significantly damaged coastal communities and infrastructure.

As a novel synthetic method for unsymmetrical macrocycles, we herein developed a post-synthetic modification of calix[4]arenes by insertion of a terminal alkyne into an inert C(methylene)-C(aryl) bond of the macrocyclic framework. In this transformation, C-iridated calix[4]arenes, readily synthesized through C-H bond activation of the parent calix[4]arene, undergoes C(methylene)-C(aryl) bond cleavage followed by insertion of an alkyne to provide a ring-expanded calix[4]arene complex. Removal of the iridium metal from the resulting complex was readily accomplished by a simple treatment with an acid.

Daily rest period (DRP) refers to the interval between the end of one workday and the start of the next. This study examined the joint association of DRP and sleep duration with subsequent sick leave among Japanese daytime employees. Participants (n=5,593) were measured for DRP and sleep duration at baseline and for sick leave at 1-year follow-up.

Machine learning (ML) is increasingly applied across various fields, including chemistry, for molecular design and optimizing reaction parameters. Yet, applying ML to experimental data is challenging due to the limited number of synthesized samples, which restricts its broader application in device development. In energy harvesting, photoanodes are crucial for solar-driven water splitting, generating hydrogen and oxygen.

Efforts to regulate and monitor emerging contaminants are insufficient because new chemicals are continually brought to market, and many are unregulated and potentially harmful. Domestic wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove micropollutants and are important sources of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment. In this study, non-target screening, an unbiased method for analyzing compounds without prior information, was used to identify compounds that may be emitted in wastewater treatment plant effluent and should be monitored.

The gas phase protonation sites of six naturally occurring nicotinoids, namely nicotine (NIC), nornicotine (NOR), anabasine (ANB), anatabine (ANT), cotinine (COT), and myosmine (MYO), consisting of a common Pyridine and differing -Pyridine rings, have been determined for the first time at the physiological temperature from cryogenic ion trap infrared spectroscopy and electronic structure calculations. The protonation site on either of these two rings is related to the nicotinoid's biological activity. At room temperature, NIC is a mixture of Pyridine and Pyrrolidine (-Pyridine) protomers, whereas NOR, ANB, ANT, and COT are pure Pyridine protomers and finally MYO is mostly a Pyroline (-Pyridine) protomer.

Nanostructuring in α-CuSe while optimizing carrier concentration holds the promise of realizing further high thermoelectric performance at near room temperature. Nevertheless, controlling the amounts of Cu vacancies, which work as acceptors, in nanostructures is considerably more intricate than in bulk materials. Hence, controlling the amounts of Cu vacancies while maintaining the α-phase and nanostructure shape poses a formidable challenge.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a noninvasive approach to cancer treatment, wherein cell death is initiated by singlet oxygen (O) production via energy transfer from excited photosensitizers to ground-state O. Effective clinical photosensitizers necessitate water solubility for in vivo administration. Hydrophobic dyes, such as phthalocyanines, cannot be used directly as photosensitizers.

Background: This study aimed to delineate the interplay between depression, hopelessness, and episodic future thinking (EFT), focusing on cognitive biases towards negative future thinking that are central to depressive symptomatically.
Methods: A Japanese university student was utilized to scrutinize divergences in EFT across groups stratified by varying degrees of depression and hopelessness. The research leveraged a modified future thinking task (FTT), the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Beck Depression Inventory-II to gauge participants' levels of hopelessness and depressive symptoms.
