The presence of microbial biofilms in many human chronic wounds led to the hypothesis that biofilms delay healing of these wounds. We tested this hypothesis in a population of 117 older individuals with venous leg ulcers who were receiving standardised therapy, including frequent debridement. Debridement specimens were analysed for the amount of bacterial biomass by two independent methods: a microscopic approach that scored the relative size and number of bacterial aggregates, interpreted as a biofilm metric, and conventional enumeration by agar plating for viable bacteria.

Purpose: Patients on oral anticancer agent (OAA) therapies have the autonomy to manage their cancer treatments in home settings. However, patients may not have adequate knowledge, confidence, or ability to effectively manage OAA-related consequences, which can significantly impact their treatment and health outcomes. This study aims to identify the associations between medication beliefs, patient activation, and self-rated health (SRH) among oncology patients taking OAAs and explore the potential mediation effects of patient activation on the relationship between medication beliefs and SRH.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to analyze wound-related factors (like biofilm and bacteria), symptoms (such as pain and swelling), and systemic inflammation (specifically serum CRP levels) in older patients with chronic venous leg ulcers over an 8-week treatment period.
  • A total of 117 participants received standardized care, and data were collected bi-weekly to evaluate the relationships among these factors using a Bayesian statistical approach.
  • Results indicated a strong link between biofilm presence and total bacteria, as well as moderate connections between biofilm and inflammation (CRP levels) and symptoms (like pain and exudate), emphasizing the need to assess and manage both wound-related factors and systemic inflammation for effective treatment.

Objectives: Oncology clinical trials are recommended to better reflect real-world cancer patient populations and to increase patient access to new treatments in trials. The influence of comorbidities on trial participation is unclear. This study examined the association of having comorbidities and patients' experiences with clinical trial discussion or actual participation.

Aim: The aim of the study was to provide a concept analysis of health equilibrium among patients with diabetes and introduced its operational definition.

Design: A concept analysis was conducted using a hybrid model of Schwartz-Barcott and Kim (Nursing research methodology: issues and implementations, Aspen, 1986).

Methods: Using consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research guidelines, 10 participants with diabetes mellitus were interviewed.

Aims And Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions on medication adherence, medication knowledge and clinical outcomes in adults taking medication for metabolic syndrome.

Background: Despite the significance of interventions designed to improve medication adherence, a systematic review of nurse-led intervention studies for metabolic syndrome is lacking.

Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

The purpose of this study was: (1) to characterise the association of wound area, wound exudate C-reactive protein (CRP), broad-spectrum matrix metalloprotease protein (MMPs), and symptoms of fatigue and pain in individuals with chronic venous leg ulcers (CVLUs) over time and (2) to identify factors associated with the wound healing trajectory in CVLUs. Seventy four participants with CVLU who received weekly sharp debridement were recruited from a wound care clinic during the 8-week study period. To examine associations among wound CRP, MMPs, pain, fatigue, and wound healing trajectory over time, we calculated Bayes factors (BF) based on a linear mixed model.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of the nursing practice environment and self-leadership on person-centered care provided by oncology nurses.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 145 nurses who worked in oncology wards at eight university hospitals in Seoul, Daejeon, and Chungcheong Province with at least six months of experience. Data were collected using a self-administered survey and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, the t-test, analysis of variance, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis in SPSS version 26.

Pain affects wound healing, treatment, and quality of life because it has significant impacts on physical, psychological, and social well-being. Despite the fact that more than half of chronic venous leg ulcer (CVLU) patients experience mild-to-moderate pain, the multidimensional characteristics of CVLU pain are not well documented. The objective of this study was to describe the multidimensional pain characteristics, including the sensory, affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions, of CVLU before debridement.

Background: Postural changes after unilateral mastectomy may appear in relation to the dominant hand, postoperative duration, and dynamic conditions. This study aimed to compare the postural changes by inclination angles and muscle activities in the static and dynamic sitting position between women with breast cancer who underwent mastectomy and women who did not have breast cancer.

Methods: The observational study design was conducted.

Background: This study investigated the prevalence of insulin refusal and compared the level of psychological insulin resistance (PIR) with the intention to accept insulin therapy among Korean patients with type 2 diabetes.

Methods: Type 2 diabetes patients (n=1,209) were recruited from inner city outpatient diabetes clinics in 2016. Patient demographic, insulin recommendation, diabetes treatment type, intention to receive insulin therapy, and PIR information was collected using self-reports.
