Gene editing using CRISPR/Cas9 is an innovative tool for developing new mushroom strains, offering a promising alternative to traditional breeding methods that are time-consuming and labor-intensive. However, plasmid-based gene editing presents several challenges, including the need for selecting appropriate promoters for Cas9 expression, optimizing codons for the Cas9 gene, the unintended insertion of fragmented plasmid DNA into genomic DNA (gDNA), and regulatory concerns related to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). To address these issues, we utilized a Ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex consisting of Cas9 and gRNA for gene editing to modify the A mating-type gene of .

Purpose: Fentanyl, a highly lipophilic opioid, was developed as a sublingual fentanyl tablet (SFT) for the management of breakthrough cancer pain (BTcP), and its efficacy and safety were confirmed in a randomized, controlled study. We investigated the effectiveness and safety of SFT administered to alleviate BTcP in a real-world setting.
Materials And Methods: In this prospective, open, single-cohort study, conducted in 13 referral hospitals in South Korea, opioid-tolerant cancer patients receiving around-the-clock opioids for persistent cancer pain were enrolled if the individual had BTcP ≥ 1 episode/day during the preceding week.

Background: Tracheostomy is performed in patients with trauma who need prolonged ventilation for respiratory failure or airway management. Although it has benefits, such as reduced sedation and easier care, it also has risks. This study explored the unclear timing, technique, and patient selection criteria for tracheostomy in patients with trauma.

High environmental temperatures lead to metabolic changes, body weight reduction, and high mortality in chickens, affecting poultry production worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of heat stress, assessed by the temperature-humidity index (THI), on the growth performance, physiological response, carcasses, and hematological traits of broilers. A total of 200 broilers (between 17 and 31 days old) were kept in thermoneutral conditions (21 °C; 60% relative humidity, RH) for 3 days during the adaptation period, followed by 14 days of exposure to the experimental treatments.

Peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1), an intracellular antioxidant enzyme, has emerged as a regulator of inflammatory responses via Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling. Despite this, the mechanistic details of the PRDX1-TLR4 axis and its impact on osteoclast differentiation remain elusive. Here, we show that PRDX1 suppresses RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation.

This study aims to classify citizens' intentions to participate in carbon neutrality activities, emphasizing the crucial role of public engagement in achieving sustainability goals amid the climate crisis. The climate crisis has rapidly become one of the most pressing challenges to global sustainable development, with carbon neutrality as a key objective. To understand variations in citizens' willingness to engage in carbon neutrality efforts, we conducted a Latent Class Analysis (LCA) on responses from 800 residents of Cheongju, South Korea, categorizing their willingness to participate in 13 different carbon neutrality activities.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) rarely occurs in the nasolacrimal duct (NLD), and when it does, it has nonspecific manifestations. To the best of our knowledge, one case of ACC in the NLD has been reported in the literature. Herein, we report a second case of ACC in the left NLD, concerning a man in his late 60s.

Background: Complete revascularization has demonstrated better outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and multivessel disease. However, in the case of left main (LM) culprit lesion AMI with multivessel disease, there is limited evidence to suggest that complete revascularization is better.
Methods: We reviewed 16,831 patients in the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry who were treated from July 2016 to June 2020, and 399 patients were enrolled with LM culprit lesion AMI treated with percutaneous coronary intervention.

In this study, two high-content flavonoid derivatives [3-8 biapigenin (HM 104) and quercetin-3--β--galactopyranoside (HM 111)] were obtained through the bioactivity-guided isolation of antidiabetic compounds from flowers. HM 104 and HM 111 exhibited good glucose consumption in fatty acid-induced insulin-resistant HepG2 cells. Moreover, both active compounds enhanced glucose uptake by restoring the expression of key regulators of glucose metabolism, including insulin receptor substrate 1, phosphoinositide 3-kinase, protein kinase B, and glucose transporter type 4, and by mitigating the expression of forkhead box O1 and the factors involved in gluconeogenesis.

As the energy industries, such as secondary batteries and fuel cells, expand rapidly, the demand for transition metals used as electrode materials is increasing, which has led to a rise in their prices. One promising strategy to address these challenges is upcycling, which involves recycling transition metal-based waste from various industries. In this study, a heterostructure electrocatalyst for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis is developed by upcycling iron-based waste from the automotive industry.

Introduction: Patients with cancer experience physical, mental, and social pain that affects themselves and their families. The increasing cancer incidence and advances in treatment have increased the number of cancer survivors in Korea, and there is an influx of patients in Seoul and other metropolitan areas, leading to shortages of continuous care and comprehensive life support facilities. Patients must travel long distances for treatment, which poses logistical and quality-of-life challenges.

Background: Bone remodeling is a critical process that maintains skeletal integrity, orchestrated by the balanced activities of osteoclasts, which resorb bone, and osteoblasts, which form bone. Osteoclastogenesis, the formation of osteoclasts, is primarily driven by NFATc1, a process activated through c-Fos and NF-κB signaling pathways in response to receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL). Dysregulation of RANKL signaling is a key contributor to pathological bone loss, as seen in conditions such as osteoporosis.

The purpose of this study was comparing performances of three breeds of donor satellite cells for cultured meat and selecting the optimal donor and providing insight into the selection of donors for cultured meat production. Cattle muscle satellite cells were isolated from the muscle tissue of Hanwoo, Holstein, and Jeju black cattle, and then sorted by fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS). Regarding proliferation of satellite cells, all three breeds showed similar trends.

In this study, the challenge of non-electrochemical activity in carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) is addressed by developing a modified chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) densification process specifically developed for directly spun CNTFs. This post-treatment method, well-known for enhancing the physical properties of CNTFs, utilizes the double diffusion phenomenon to efficiently integrate a diverse range of active materials, from conductive polymers like polyaniline (PANI) to metal oxides like nickel oxide (NiO), into the fibers. This universal and cost-effective approach not only simplifies the integration process but also significantly boosts both the electrochemical and physical properties of the fibers.

This paper introduces a novel TRNG architecture that employs a wave converter to generate random outputs from the jitter noise in a customized ring oscillator (RO). Using a current-starved inverter, the proposed RO offers the option of operating three different oscillation frequencies from a single oscillator. To assess its performance, the core TRNG proposed in this work was designed with multiple samples, employing various transistor sizes for 28 nm CMOS processes.

The inner ear is one of the sensory organs of vertebrates and is largely composed of the vestibule, which controls balance, and the cochlea, which is responsible for hearing. In particular, a problem in cochlear development can lead to hearing loss. Although numerous studies have been conducted on genes involved in the development of the cochlea, many areas still need to be discovered regarding factors that control the patterning of the early cochlear duct.
