Rationale: Most of the intracranial epidermoid cysts are benign, but malignant lesions are occasionally reported. These lesions appear as squamous cell carcinoma and carry a dismal prognosis. Here, we report a case of a primary intracranial squamous cell carcinoma arising in a cerebellopontine epidermoid cyst.

We developed a genetic marker set of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) by summing risk scores of 14 SNPs showing a significant association with aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) from our previous 660 W genome-wide association data. The summed scores were higher in the AERD than in the aspirin-tolerant asthma (ATA) group (P=8.58 × 10(-37)), and were correlated with the percent decrease in forced expiratory volume in 1 s after aspirin challenge (r(2)=0.

Purpose: Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has recently been observed to activate NF-kappaB and induce inflammatory responses such as asthma. Activating transcription factor 6β (ATF6B) is known to regulate ATFα-mediated ER stress response. The aim of this study is to investigate the associations of ATF6B genetic variants with aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) and its major phenotype, % decline of FEV1 by aspirin provocation.

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is a relatively rare condition characterized by severe, paroxysmal episodes of lancinating pain in the tongue, throat, ear, and tonsil. This disorder is assumed to be due to compression of the glossopharyngeal nerve by vascular structures. A 47-year-old woman complaining of sharp and lancinating pain in the right periauricular and submandibular areas visited our hospital.

To characterize an outbreak of pandemic H1N1 2009 among healthcare personnel (HCP), we conducted a cross-sectional survey of HCP who had worked in four general hospitals during the outbreak. More than one-quarter of responding HCP (27.6%) had influenza-like illness (ILI) during the outbreak.

Angioleiomyoma, a benign soft tissue tumor composed of smooth muscle cells and vascular endothelium, occurs most commonly in the extremities, the lower leg being a common site of occurrence. It rarely is found in the head and neck area, especially in the nasolabial groove. Surgical excision is the gold standard for diagnosis and treatment of angioleiomyoma; a preoperative diagnosis may be difficult.

Capillary hemangiomas are common soft tissue tumors on the skin or mucosa of the head and neck in the early childhood, but very rare in the neuraxis. A 47-year-old man presented with one month history of back pain on the lower thoracic area, radiating pain to both legs, and hypesthesia below T7 dermatome. Thoracic spine MRI showed 1×1.

Remote cerebellar hemorrhage (RCH) is rare but potentially lethal as a complication of spinal surgery. We recently experienced a case of RCH in a 61-year-old man who showed mental deterioration after lumbar spinal surgery. There was dural tearing with subsequent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) loss during the surgery.

Objective: Barbiturate coma therapy (BCT) has been known to be an useful method to control increased intracranial pressure (IICP) refractory to medical and surgical treatments. We have used BCT for patients with severe IICP during the past 10 years, and analyzed our results with review of literatures.
Methods: We analyzed 92 semicomatose or comatose patients with Glasgow coma scale (GCS) of 7 or less with severe IICP due to cerebral edema secondary to parenchymal damages irrespective of their causes.

Purpose: To evaluate the changes in laser iridotomies, intraocular pressure (IOP), angle structures, and pupil diameter after implantable contact lens (ICL) (Version 4 Staar Surgical) implantation in myopic Asian eyes.
Setting: Department of Ophthalmology, Chung-Ang University Yongsan Hospital, Seoul, Korea.
Methods: The ICL was implanted in 81 eyes of 43 patients with spherical equivalent greater than -6.

Purpose: To establish the immortalized human corneal endothelial cell line (IHCEn) by transducing human papilloma virus (HPV) 16 E6/E7 oncogenes, and to identify their characteristics when cultivated on a lyophilized human amniotic membrane (LAM).
Methods: Primary human corneal endothelial cells (PHCEn) were infected using a retroviral vector with HPV 16 E6/E7, and transformed cells were clonally selected by G418. Growth properties and characteristics of IHCEn were compared with PHCEn by cell counting and RT-PCR of VDAC3, SLC4A4, CLCN3, FGF-1, Col IV, and Na+/K+ ATPase.

Aim: To investigate whether estrogen was involved in relaxation of rabbit cavernous smooth muscle.
Methods: Relaxation response of the rabbit cavernous smooth muscles to 17beta-estradiol (0.3, 3, 30 and 300 nmol/L) were observed in vitro.

A Korean multicenter study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of transurethral alprostadil with MUSE in 334 subjects with chronic erectile dysfunction (ED) who were enrolled in 21 clinical centers. Patients with psychogenic impotence comprised about 30% of subjects. Intraurethral alprostadil was titrated in a stepwise fashion in the clinics from 250 to 500 or 1000 mcg based on erectile response and tolerability.

In vitro and in vivo studies were performed to determine the potential use of tamsulosin (TAM) versus phentolamine (PHE) for intracavernosal injection (ICI) therapy when mixed with papaverine (PAP) and/or prostagladin E1 (PGE1) or with vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. We performed isometric tension studies on rabbit (n = 15), dog (n = 5), and human (n = 10) cavernous smooth muscle strips with TAM, PAP, PHE, VIP, PGE1, and the combinations of PAP and PHE; PAP and TAM; VIP and PHE; VIP and TAM; PAP, PGE1 and PHE; and PAP, PGE1 and TAM. The effects of ultraviolet (UV) light (310 nm) on human cavernosal smooth muscles were investigated. Cavernosal strips were obtained from men during penile prosthetic surgery. When the cavernosal strips were irradiated with UV light in an organ bath, after precontraction by norepinephrine (100 nM) for 10, 20, 40 and 90 s at intervals of 3 min, the contracted cavernosal smooth muscles from the impotent men without vascular risk factors (controls) showed relaxation depending on the duration of irradiation.

Two cases of high-flow priapism that occurred after blunt perineal trauma and lasted for 35 days (case 1) and 40 days (case 2) were successfully treated by embolization of the lacerated cavernous arteries with autologous clots. Cavernous arterial blushes were demonstrated on selective internal pudendal arteriograms in both cases. Case 1 with left cavernous arterial laceration restored 80% of premorbid erectile function with successful intercourse 4 months after superselective embolization.
