Stem cells of the corneal epithelium have been found to be located exclusively at the anatomical junction between the cornea and the conjunctiva, the limbus. Ex vivo expanded limbal epithelial cells on amniotic membrane (AM) are capable of restoring the corneal surface with limbal stem cell deficiency. Recent studies indicate that intact AM preserves the limbal epithelial phenotype and that distinct epithelial morphology is noted among various culture matrix.

Chronic non-traumatic myelopathy developed in a woman who presented symptoms of gait ataxia, right leg motor weakness, dysesthesia and urinary difficulty. Clinical evaluation revealed right leg weakness and global anesthesia as well as temperature, vibratory and proprioception sensation loss below the T-9 level and deep tendon hyperreflexia over the lower extremities. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an extra-intramedullary meningioma at the T-9 level.

Objective: We attempted to evaluate the therapeutic effect of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) for vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VaIN) after hysterectomy and to identify factors affecting persistence/recurrence.

Methods: Twenty-eight post-hysterectomy patients with various grades of VaIN were enrolled in this study between January 2001 and December 2003. They were managed with intravaginal 50% TCA once weekly for 1-4 weeks, and all patients were followed up every 3 months for at least 1 year.

Nipple reconstruction is usually the final stage of breast reconstruction and there are over 50 articles that describe different techniques. The majority of methods use local soft tissue as local flaps but they face the disadvantage of reduction in nipple projection after the initial two months. This is particularly troublesome in Asian females who may have wider nipples with prominent projection but small areola surface area.

Anesthetic management of a parturient with respiratory failure associated with hemoptysis, dyspnea, and orthopnea is difficult. An anesthesiologist should realize that the patient's major problem is not solved during the surgery. This circumstance is similar to a patient with associated cardiac disease scheduled for non-cardiac surgery.

Chang Gung Med J

December 2002

Division of Trauma & Emergency, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Chung Gung Memorial Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, ROC.

Background: A prospective clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the conjunctive use of an extramedullary device and the bridge-plating technique in the treatment of comminuted subtrochanteric fractures with major extension into the femoral shaft.

Methods: A Winquist criteria was used to classify 3 fracture patterns. The type 3 fractures were excluded from this study because of great extent of the fracture zone for which the bridge-plating technique is not indicated.

Although venous thrombosis is a frequently encountered problem in nephrotic syndrome, the occurrence of arterial thrombosis is much less common, and is usually associated with a poor prognosis. To the best of our knowledge, there has been only one reported case of concurrent cerebral and femoral artery thrombosis, that of a 23-year-old male who finally died. Herein, we report a case of a 35-year-old woman with nephrotic syndrome.

Dislocation of total knee arthroplasty. A report of 6 cases with 2 patterns of instability.

Acta Orthop Scand

June 1997

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Chung Gung Memorial Hospital at Kaoshiung, Niao Sung Hsiang, Kaoshiung Hsien, Taiwan.

We report 6 cases of dislocation of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We identified 2 patterns of instability in the sagittal plane, one with posterior translation of the tibia, occurring mainly in the postoperative period and usually resulting from a trauma, and the other with anterior translation of the tibia, occurring 6 months to 7 years postoperatively and with no preceding trauma. In the latter group, instability was manifested gradually as a lengthening of the posterior cruciate ligament and the posterior capsule, leading to a recurvatum deformity of the knee.
