Safety Profile of Biportal Endoscopic Spine Surgery Compared to Conventional Microscopic Approach: A Pooled Analysis of 2 Randomized Controlled Trials.

Objective: To compare the safety profiles of biportal endoscopic spinal surgery (BESS) and microscopic spinal surgery (MSS) for lumbar disc herniation and spinal stenosis by analyzing the associated adverse events.

Methods: We pooled data from 2 prospective randomized controlled trials involving 220 patients (110 in each group) who underwent single-level lumbar surgery. Participants aged 20-80 years with radiating pain due to lumbar disc herniation or spinal stenosis were included in this study.

Efficacy and Safety of Silodosin for the Treatment of Female LUTS: A 12-Week Prospective, Single-Center Study.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of silodosin in female patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs), addressing the limited evidence supporting alpha-blocker use in this population.

Methods: A 12-week, single-arm, prospective, open-label study was conducted from May 2021 to January 2023. Female patients aged over 18 with an International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) ≥ 8 were enrolled and treated with silodosin (8 mg once daily).

Background: Mitochondrial function influences Parkinson's disease (PD) through the accumulation of pathogenic alpha-synuclein, oxidative stress, impaired autophagy, and neuroinflammation. The mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN), representing the number of mitochondrial DNA copies within a cell, serves as an easily assessable proxy for mitochondrial function.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the diagnostic and prognostic capabilities of mtDNA-CN in PD.

Clinical features of FOSMN syndrome in Korea: A comparative analysis with bulbar-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN) syndrome is a rare neurodegenerative disorder initially characterized by facial sensory deficits, which later progress to motor deficits in a rostral-caudal distribution. This study investigated the prevalence, clinical features, and prognosis of FOSMN syndrome and compared these aspects with those of bulbar-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) within a single institutional cohort of motor neuron diseases. We identified four patients with FOSMN syndrome who had been misclassified as having bulbar-onset ALS, representing approximately 2 % of such ALS cases.

National and regional trends in the prevalence of Perthes' disease among the male population in South Korea.

Aims: We evaluated the national and regional trends from 2013 to 2022, in the prevalence of Perthes' disease among adolescent males in South Korea.

Methods: This retrospective, nationwide, population-based study included a total of 3,166,669 Korean adolescent males examined at regional Military Manpower Administration (MMA) offices over ten years. Data from the MMA were retrospectively collected to measure the national and regional prevalence per 100,000 and 95% CI of Perthes' disease according to the year (1 January 2013 to 31 December 2022) and history of pelvic and/or femoral osteotomy in South Korea.

Effects of bladder neck sparing on continence outcomes of robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy: a systemic review and metaanalysis.

Restoration of postoperative urinary continence after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is affected by diverse factors. We compared the pad-free and positive margin rates of patients who underwent RARP with or without bladder neck sparing (BNS) for prostate cancer. During this systematic review and metaanalysis, we performed an electronic search of the Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and PubMed to find original articles comparing RARP with and without BNS for prostate cancer.

Favorable long-term outcomes of autoimmune nodopathy with mycophenolate mofetil.

Autoimmune nodopathy (AN) is a rare immune-mediated neuropathy characterized by autoantibodies against nodal or paranodal proteins. Patients with AN generally respond poorly to immunoglobulin therapy, and as a newly defined condition, there are currently no established treatment guidelines. Although rituximab shows potential as a therapeutic option, its high cost, limited availability, and the need for infusion monitoring hinder its use as a first-line treatment in many countries.

Introduction: The use of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) during pregnancies complicated by systemic lupus erythematosus or refractory antiphospholipid antibody syndrome has demonstrated a significant ability to prevent pre-eclampsia (PE). As such, the potential for the administration of HCQ to prevent PE in other high-risk pregnancies is an important clinical research agenda among maternal and fetal medicine specialists. Mechanistically, the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of HCQ can offer vascular protection and inhibit the placental dysfunction-associated thrombotic changes underlying the pathophysiology of PE, fetal growth restriction (FGR) and fetal death in utero (FDIU).

Validation of the Korean version of inflammatory Rasch-built Overall Disability Scale in patients with inflammatory neuropathy.

Background And Aims: The Inflammatory Rasch-built Overall Disability Scale (I-RODS) is an effective activity measure for use in inflammatory peripheral neuropathy. The aim of this study was to validate the Korean version of the I-RODS in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), anti-myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) neuropathy, and autoimmune nodopathy.

Methods: A total of 120 patients underwent clinical evaluations, which included the I-RODS, Inflammatory Neuropathy Cause and Treatment (INCAT) assessment, and Jamar grip strength (kg) measurement.

Arthrodesis Versus Ligament Reconstruction and Tendon Interposition for Thumb Carpometacarpal Joint Arthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Purpose: Arthrodesis and ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition (LRTI) are commonly performed procedures for treatment of thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis. Although LRTI is the most common surgical treatment, CMC arthrodesis has been performed because of its reported advantages. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the differences between CMC arthrodesis and LRTI to better inform surgeons and patients when they are making treatment decisions.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between hip muscle mass and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) after total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgery for hip disease using 3D volumetric measurements of the gluteus muscle group and iliac muscle.

Materials And Methods: Between January 2020 and December 2021, 85 patients who had undergone unilateral THA for osteoarthritis or osteonecrosis of the femoral head were enrolled. Using a 3D modeler program, automatically generated 3D reconstructed images of the hip muscles were obtained, and volumetric measurements were performed.

Introduction And Objectives: Recent randomized controlled trials support the use of intravascular imaging-guided percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to improve patient prognosis. However, the subsequent risk of clinical events in patients with coronary artery disease is not determined solely by lesion characteristics or how these lesions are treated. The current study investigated whether the effects of intravascular imaging in complex PCI vary according to atherothrombotic risks.

Early management of adult sepsis and septic shock: Korean clinical practice guidelines.

Background: Despite recent advances and global improvements in sepsis recognition and supportive care, mortality rates remain high, and adherence to sepsis bundle components in Korea is low. To address this, the Korean Sepsis Alliance, affiliated with the Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine, developed the first sepsis treatment guidelines for Korea based on a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: A de novo method was used to develop the guidelines.

Background: To compare knee laxity between the conventional round tunnel and oval tunnel techniques in primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in a porcine knee model.

Methods: Twenty porcine knees were used for evaluating laxity in terms of anterior translation and anterolateral rotation. The study determined porcine knee kinematics on the Instron instruments under simulated Lachman (89 N anterior tibial load) at 15°, 30°, and 60° of flexion and a simulated pivot shift test (89 N anterior tibial load, 10 Nm valgus, and 4 Nm internal tibial torque) at 30° of flexion.

The association between locomotive function and incidence of proximal junctional kyphosis following adult spine deformity surgery.

Background And Objectives: This retrospective review study aimed to determine whether functional mobility test (FMT) results are related to the incidence of proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) after surgical correction of adult spinal deformity (ASD).

Methods: A total of 157 patients who underwent reconstructive spinal surgery for ASD between July 2019 and December 2021 were included in this study. Three types of FMTs were performed preoperatively: timed-up-and-go (TUG) test, five times sit-to-stand (STS) test, and alternate step (AS) test.
