External compression of a vein is a relatively rare but important cause of unilateral leg edema. Here, we present a case of unilateral right leg edema caused by external compression of the right iliac vein due to a markedly distended urinary bladder, secondary to a neurogenic bladder. The patient initially had bilateral leg edema associated with chronic heart failure.

While high-level evidence is lacking, numerous retrospective studies have depicted the value of supplemental oxygen in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and other interstitial lung diseases, and its use should be encouraged where necessary. The clinical course and survival of patients with IPF who have been introduced to oxygen therapy is still not fully understood. The objective of this study was to clarify overall survival, factors associated with prognosis, and causes of death in IPF patients after the start of oxygen therapy.

Objectives: In anticancer clinical trials, particularly open-label trials, central reviewers are recommended to evaluate progression-free survival (PFS) and objective response rate (ORR) to avoid detection bias of local investigators. However, it is not clear whether the bias has been adequately identified, or to what extent it consistently distorts the results. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the detection bias in oncological open-label trials by confirming whether local investigators overestimate the PFS and ORR compared with the findings of central reviewers.

The accurate diagnosis and therapeutic strategies of thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDCs) are challenging for surgeons if the opening with exudate is far from the hyoid bone. A 7-year-old boy presented with a right supraclavicular mass and persistent pus. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed the fistula to the hyoid bone.

This study compared in-hospital outcomes of patients admitted to high-volume primary PCI hospitals (≥115/year) with those for other regional general hospitals.
Methods and results: Retrospective analysis was conducted on data obtained from 2,453 patients with AMI admitted to hospitals in Iwate Prefecture (2014-2018).

The BRCA1-interacting protein Obg-like ATPase 1 (OLA1) functions in centriole duplication. In this study, we show the role of the mitotic kinase Aurora A in the reduction of centrosomal OLA1. Aurora A binds to and polyubiquitinates OLA1, targeting it for proteasomal degradation.

Background: Intrarenal venous flow (IRVF) patterns assessed using Doppler renal ultrasonography are real-time bedside visualizations of renal vein hemodynamics. Although this technique has the potential to detect renal congestion during sepsis resuscitation, there have been few studies on this method. We aimed to examine the relationship between IRVF patterns, clinical parameters, and outcomes in critically ill adult patients with sepsis.

Although smoking is a major modifiable risk factor for many types of cancer, evidence for colorectal cancer is equivocal in Asian populations. Recent Western studies have proposed that the association between smoking and colorectal cancer is restricted to specific tumor molecular subtypes. However, no studies have evaluated the association according to tumor molecular subtypes in Asian populations.

Background: Skeletal muscle atrophy, a common complication of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and its presence upon diagnosis can indicate a poor prognosis. Patients with IPF frequently experience acute exacerbations (AE), which is associated with a high mortality rate. However, the association between skeletal muscle atrophy and short-term mortality remains unknown.

Objectives: One primary concern about receiving care at home is that survival might be shortened because the quality and quantity of treatment provided at home will be inferior to that given in the hospital. Although our previous study demonstrated a longer survival of those with home-based palliative care (PC), it lacked adjustment for some potential confounders including symptoms and treatments during the stay. We aimed to compare the survival times among advanced cancer patients receiving home-based and hospital-based PC with adjusting for symptoms and treatments.

Since the National Cancer Institute (NCI) alert of concurrent chemoradiotherapy, radiotherapy has been changed from external beam radiotherapy plus brachytherapy to platinum-based concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Therefore, concurrent chemoradiotherapy plus brachytherapy has become a standard treatment for locally advanced cervical cancer. Simultaneously, definitive radiotherapy has been changed gradually from external beam radiotherapy plus low-dose-rate intracavitary brachytherapy to external beam radiotherapy plus high-dose-rate intracavitary brachytherapy.
