Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors in Patients with Testicular Cancer: A Systematic Review.

Germ cell tumors (GCTs) are chemosensitive neoplasms with high cure rates; however, a small group of patients present tumors with refractory chemotherapy, with a dismal prognosis and few effective management options. Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are approved for use in chemotherapy refractory GCT, the evidence supporting this indication remains scarce. Original research studies were included on patients with GCTs refractory to chemotherapy treated with ICI up to December 2023.

Cholecystectomy Is a Risk Factor for Proximal Colon Cancer That May Also Relate to its Aggressiveness.

Introduction: There are studies with mixed conclusions about the role cholecystectomy plays as a risk factor for proximal colorectal cancer (CRC).

Methods: We performed a multicenter retrospective cohort study where the records of patients with CRC were reviewed. Data was collected regarding affected colon subsegment (cecum, ascending, transverse, descending, sigmoid, or rectum, which were also combined into proximal or distal colon), history and time since cholecystectomy, histopathology reports (TNM classification and clinical stage), and KRAS, NRAS, and BRAF mutation analysis.

Early Diagnosis of Huntington Disease: Insights from Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy-A Systematic Review.

: Huntington's disease (HD) is a fully penetrant neurodegenerative disease with a profound effect on quality of life. In recent years, there has been rapid growth in the description of its pathogenesis and diagnosis. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) measurements can aid in the discrimination between premanifest Huntington's disease (Pre-HD) and healthy control (HC) subjects to establish early supportive and symptomatic management.

A rare case of transverse testicular ectopia associated with polyorchidism addressed by minimally invasive surgery: A case report.

This report describes the rare case of transverse testicular ectopia (TTE) associated with polyorchidism in a 16-month-old male, successfully managed through laparoscopic surgery. The patient presented with bilateral cryptorchidism, a palpable mass in the right inguinal canal and an absent left-side gonad. Ultrasound revealed three gonad-like structures.

Venetoclax with low-dose cytarabine, a forgotten combination in patients with acute myeloid leukemia ineligible for intensive chemotherapy: a systematic review.

Background: Based on the VIALE-A and VIALE-C studies, the Food and Drug Administration approved venetoclax in 2020 in combination with azacitidine or low-dose cytarabine for the treatment of patients with acute myeloid leukemia ineligible for intensive chemotherapy. After the publication of these studies, venetoclax/azacitidine was assumed to be superior to venetoclax/low-dose cytarabine; however, these studies were not designed to demonstrate superiority between these combinations. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review to describe overall survival, complete remission rate, and composite complete remission rate to assess response of these two regimens in patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia who are ineligible for intensive chemotherapy.

A multicentric outbreak of Candida auris in Mexico: 2020 to 2023.

Background: Candida auris, an emerging multidrug-resistant yeast, has become a global concern due to its association with nosocomial outbreaks and resistance to antifungal medications. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation, with several outbreaks reported worldwide, including in Mexico. We describe the clinical and microbiological characteristics of a multicentric outbreak in private institutions in Mexico.

Molecular epidemiology of carbapenemase encoding genes in infections in children: a systematic review.

Background: complex is the leader pathogen for the World Health Organization's list due to the escalating prevalence of multidrug-resistant strains. Insights into the molecular characterization of carbapenemase genes in complex infections among children are scarce. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review to describe the molecular epidemiology of the carbapenemase genes in complex infections in the pediatric population.

Background: No robust data are available on the safety of primary bariatric and metabolic surgery (BMS) alone compared to primary BMS combined with other procedures.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to collect a 30-day mortality and morbidity of primary BMS combined with cholecystectomy, ventral hernia repair, or hiatal hernia repair.

Setting: This is as an international, multicenter, prospective, and observational audit of patients undergoing primary BMS combined with one or more additional procedures.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a heterogeneous condition characterized by changes in behavior, personality, and language resulting from degeneration of the frontal and/or temporal lobes. A wide spectrum of clinical syndromes and an overlap with different motor disorders make this entity challenging for clinicians, both in achieving a correct diagnosis and providing proper treatment. Despite the majority of cases being sporadic, FTD has a hereditary component, and more than 10 disease-causing genes have been identified.

The Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of acute pancreatitis in children and adolescents.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) and recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP) are conditions, whose incidence is apparently on the rise. Despite the ever-increasing evidence regarding the management of AP in children and adults, therapeutic actions that could potentially affect having a poor prognosis in those patients, especially in the pediatric population, continue to be carried out. Therefore, the Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología convened a group of 24 expert pediatric gastroenterologists from different institutions and areas of Mexico, as well as 2 pediatric nutritionists and 2 specialists in pediatric surgery, to discuss different aspects of the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of AP and RAP in the pediatric population.

Carcinoid Heart Disease From a Primary Liver Carcinoid Tumor.

Carcinoid heart disease (CaHD) is part of the carcinoid syndrome. Cardiac involvement is present in 20% to 60% of patients with carcinoid syndrome and is normally from liver metastasis. We report the case of a patient who presented with CaHD disease with an undiagnosed primary tumor or a possible primary liver carcinoid tumor.

Performance of the predictive criteria of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in the diagnosis of choledocholithiasis at a secondary care public hospital in the State of Nuevo León, Mexico.

Introduction And Aims: Currently there is no ideal diagnostic/therapeutic approach for patients with suspected choledocholithiasis. The primary aim of our study was to evaluate the performance of the criteria for predicting choledocholithiasis proposed by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) in 2019.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective study was conducted that included 352 patients seen at a secondary care public healthcare institution in Monterrey, Nuevo León, that treats an open population and does not have endoscopic ultrasound or magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography at its disposal.

Background: Limited data is available from low-middle and upper-middle income countries of the factors associated with hospitalization or admission to pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for children with COVID-19.

Objective: To describe the factors associated with hospitalization or PICU admission of children with COVID-19 in Latin America.

Method: Multicenter, analytical, retrospective study of children reported from 10 different Latin American countries to the Latin-American Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (SLIPE-COVID) research network from June 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021.

A survey among healthcare professionals from seven countries reported diverse nutritional practices of late preterm infants.

Aim: To gain insight into nutritional practices and expected growth outcomes of infants born between 34 and 36 gestational weeks defined as late preterm infants (LPT).

Methods: An anonymous online survey among paediatricians and neonatologists from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan was conducted from March until October 2020. The questionnaire consisted of 40 questions on the nutritional management and expected growth outcomes of LPT in and after-hospital care.
