Brain metastasis leads to increased mortality and is a major site of relapse for several cancers, yet the molecular mechanisms of brain metastasis are not well understood. In this study, we established and characterized a new leukemic cell line, FIA10, that metastasizes into the central nervous system (CNS) following injection into the tail vein of syngeneic mice. Mice injected with FIA10 cells developed neurological symptoms such as loss of balance, tremor, ataxic gait and seizures, leading to death within 3 months.

Brain-Restricted Inhibition of IL-6 Trans-Signaling Mildly Affects Metabolic Consequences of Maternal Obesity in Male Offspring.

Nutrients

October 2021

Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Cologne, University of Cologne, D-50937 Cologne, Germany.

Maternal obesity greatly affects next generations, elevating obesity risk in the offspring through perinatal programming and flawed maternal and newborn nutrition. The exact underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) mediates its effects through a membrane-bound receptor or by trans-signaling (tS), which can be inhibited by the soluble form of the co-receptor gp130 (sgp130).

Impact of nicotine and maternal BMI on fetal birth weight.

BMC Pregnancy Childbirth

February 2021

Department of Gynecology, University Hospital Freiburg, Hugstetter Str. 55, 79106, Freiburg, Germany.

Background: According to the World Health Organization, smoking is the most important risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes in industrialized nations. As the individual factors (body mass index - BMI (kg/m) - and cigarette consumption) have been extensively investigated in pregnancy, we aimed to establish how maternal BMI and nicotine interact with regard to perinatal outcomes and birth weight.

Methods: Data from 110.

The Effect of Hunger and Satiety on Mood-Related Food Craving.

Front Psychol

November 2020

Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, Institute of Psychology, Christian-Albrechts-University zu Kiel, Kiel, Germany.

In addition to hunger, which results from food deprivation, fasting, or restrained eating, food craving is thought to be one of the major factors influencing eating behavior. Although food craving occurs in healthy humans with normal eating behavior, research suggests pronounced food craving to be a risk factor for binging food, which in turn might cause weight gain and obesity. In addition, negative mood seems to induce binge eating, although the underlying processes are not clearly understood.

Gait changes occur during all Parkinson's disease (PD) stages and wearable sensor-derived gait parameters may quantify PD progression. However, key aspects that may qualify quantitative gait parameters as progression markers in PD remain elusive. Longitudinal changes in gait parameters from a lower-back sensor under convenient and challenging walking conditions in early- and mid-stage PD patients (E-PD, M-PD) compared to controls were investigated.

Melatonin Secretion during a Short Nap Fosters Subsequent Feedback Learning.

Front Hum Neurosci

January 2018

Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, School of Medicine, Christian-Albrechts-University zu Kiel, Kiel, Germany.

Sleep helps to protect and renew hippocampus-dependent declarative learning. Less is known about forms of learning that mainly engage the dopaminergic reward system. Animal studies showed that exogenous melatonin modulates the responses of the dopaminergic reward system and acts as a neuroprotectant promoting memory.

(Bio-)remediation of VCHC contaminants in a Technosol under unsaturated conditions.

Biodegradation

July 2013

Institute for Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, Christian-Albrechts-University zu Kiel, Hermann-Rodewald-Strasse 2, Kiel, Germany.

The remediation of dense non-aqueous phase liquids has always been a concern of both public and scientific interest groups. In this research work a modified physical concept of (bio)remediation of a volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon (VCHC) contamination was elaborated under laboratory conditions and modeled with HYDRUS-2D. In field dechlorination is influenced by both physicochemical and hydraulic properties of the substrate, e.

In this study a liposome cell labeling system was developed for non-target-specific labeling of glioma cells with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A high non-target-specific uptake is ideal for in vitro labeling of cells and subsequently for cell tracking and visualization of phagocytic cells in vivo. The preparation of iron oxide-loaded liposomes was optimized and the biological properties of the liposomes were investigated.
