The vitamin D receptor TaqI TT genotype is associated with type 1 diabetes in the Black South African population.

J Nutr Sci

December 2024

Department of Chemical Pathology, National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS), Johannesburg, South Africa.

Polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene (BsmI (rs1544410), FokI (rs2228570), ApaI (rs7975232), TaqI (rs731236)) and low vitamin D concentrations have previously been associated with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Vitamin D is thought to mediate the switch from a pro-inflammatory Th1 response to an anti-inflammatory Th2 response which is protective against the development of T1D. These associations are inconsistent across studies and population groups.

The relative potential contribution of volume load and vascular mechanisms to hypertension in non-dialysis and dialysis chronic kidney disease patients.

Front Cardiovasc Med

April 2024

Cardiovascular Pathophysiology and Genomics Research Unit, Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Physiology, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Background: Hypertension is highly prevalent and particularly difficult to treat adequately in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The relative contribution of volume overload and vascular mechanisms to blood pressure measures in CKD and whether these effects differ in non-dialysis compared to dialysis patients is unknown.

Methods: We determined the potential impact of volume load (stroke volume) and vascular mechanisms (inverse of total arterial compliance (inv TAC) and systemic vascular resistance (SVR)) on mean and brachial and aortic systolic blood pressures in 67 non-dialysis and 48 dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients.

FGFR2 genetic variants in women with breast cancer.

Mol Med Rep

December 2023

Department of Internal Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of The Witwatersrand, Johannesburg 2193, South Africa.

Black African populations are more genetically diverse than others, but genetic variants have been studied primarily in European populations. The present study examined the association of four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2, associated with breast cancer in non‑African populations, with breast cancer in Black, southern African women. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole blood samples of 1,001 patients with breast cancer and 1,006 controls (without breast cancer), and the rs2981582, rs35054928, rs2981578, and rs11200014 polymorphisms were analyzed using allele‑specific Kompetitive allele‑specific PCR™, and the χ or Fisher's exact tests were used to compare the genotype frequencies.

Laparotomy incisions provide easy and rapid access to the peritoneal cavity in case of emergency surgery. Incisional hernia (IH) is a late manifestation of the failure of abdominal wall closure and represents frequent complication of any abdominal incision: IHs can cause pain and discomfort to the patients but also clinical serious sequelae like bowel obstruction, incarceration, strangulation, and necessity of reoperation. Previous guidelines and indications in the literature consider elective settings and evidence about laparotomy closure in emergency settings is lacking.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how different left ventricular mass parameters relate to left ventricular function in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients.
  • It finds that non-hemodynamic remodeling parameters have a stronger association with impaired left ventricular systolic function compared to traditionally determined left ventricular mass indices.
  • The research concludes that traditional left ventricular mass indices are less effective in identifying impaired systolic function because they reflect both adaptive and non-hemodynamic changes in the heart.
