Objective: We conducted experiments to elucidate the impact of ischemic change on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) using immunohistochemistry.
Methods: Medical records of consecutive patients over 60 years of age who underwent transurethral resection of the prostate for BPH between January 2009 and September 2012 were evaluated. As vascular risk factors, the presence or absence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, current smoking, obesity, dyslipidemia, and diseases related to bladder function were investigated.

Background/aim: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common in the world and its prevalence is rapidly increasing. Jagged-1-activated Notch signaling by apurinic/apyrimidinic endodeoxyribonuclease 1 (APEX1) promotes CRC, and high expression of Jagged-1 is associated with poor prognosis. However, its clinical implication is unknown.

Background/aims: Frequent bleeding after endoscopic resection (ER) has been reported in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). We aimed to evaluate the association and clinical significance of bleeding with ER in ESRD patients on dialysis.
Methods: Between February 2008 and December 2018, 7,571 patients, including 47 ESRD patients on dialysis who underwent ER for gastric neoplasia, were enrolled.

Background: Bronchobiliary fistula (BBF) is a rare disease characterized by an abnormal connection between the biliary system and bronchi. Traditional causes of BBF include trauma and infections, and more recent causes include malignancies and certain cancer treatments. Ramucirumab is an antivascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 monoclonal antibody, currently used as a second-line treatment for gastric cancer.

Background And Objectives: Hypertension is becoming one of the most common health conditions in children and adolescents due to increasing childhood obesity. We aimed to provide the auscultatory blood pressure (BP) normative reference values for Korean non-overweight children and adolescents.
Methods: BP measurements in children and adolescents aged 10 to 18 years were performed in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 1998 to 2016.

The adaptor-related protein complex 5 subunit mu 1 (AP5M1) is an evolutionally conserved protein with ubiquitous expression in human tissues. However, the major function of AP5M1 in living organisms is unclear owing to few published studies. Here, we demonstrate that AP5M1 is a potent apoptosis-inducing molecule in cervical cancer cells.

Noxa is a weak apoptosis activator consisting of a BH3 domain and a mitochondrial-targeting domain (MTD). BH3 binds Mcl-1 and Bcl2A1 and inactivates their anti-apoptotic activities, while MTD delivers BH3 to mitochondria. Previously we revealed that MTD may also function as an inducer of necrosis via conjugation with octa-arginine, which induces cytosolic Ca influx from mitochondria.

During ligand-mediated receptor endocytosis, the small GTPase Rab5 functions in vesicle fusion and trafficking. Rab5 activation is known to require interactions with its guanine nucleotide-exchange factors (GEFs); however, the mechanism regulating Rab5 interactions with GEFs remains unclear. Here, we show that the SH3-adapter protein SPIN90 participates in the activation of Rab5 through the recruitment of both Rab5 and its GEF, Gapex5, to endosomal membranes during epidermal growth factor (EGF)-mediated endocytosis.

Background: Cardiac hypertrophy is associated with functional changes in cardiomyocytes, which often results in heart failure. The low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) is a large multifunctional endocytic receptor involved in many physiological and pathological processes. However, its function in the development of cardiac hypertrophy remains largely unclear.

Noxa, a Bcl-2 homology 3 (BH3)-only protein of the Bcl-2 family, is responsive to cell stresses and triggers apoptosis by binding the prosurvival Bcl-2-like proteins Mcl1, Bcl, and Bcl2A1. Although the Noxa BH3 domain is necessary to induce apoptosis, the mitochondrial targeting domain (MTD) of Noxa functions as a pronecrotic domain, an inducer of mitochondrial fragmentation, and delivery to mitochondria. In this study, we demonstrate that the extended MTD (eMTD) peptide induces necrotic cell death by interaction with the VDAC2 protein.

BMAP-27, a member of cathelicidin family, plays an important role against microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi. BMAP-27 may exert antimicrobial effects through membrane integrity disruption, but the exact molecular mechanism remains unclear. To identify the structural features important for antimicrobial activity and propose a mechanism underlying antibacterial effects, we determined the nuclear magnetic resonance structure of BMAP-27 in a membrane-mimetic environment and investigated its interactions with lipid membranes.

Background: Current diagnostic tests for hereditary spherocytosis (HS) focus on the detection of hemolysis or indirectly assessing defects of membrane protein, whereas direct methods to detect protein defects are complicated and difficult to implement. In the present study, we investigated the patterns of genetic variation associated with HS among patients clinically diagnosed with HS.
Methods: Multi-gene targeted sequencing of 43 genes (17 RBC membrane protein-encoding genes, 20 RBC enzyme-encoding genes, and six additional genes for the differential diagnosis) was performed using the Illumina HiSeq platform.

Since the introduction of the Papanicolaou (Pap) smear system in 1943, cervicovaginal cytology has been used as a standard screening test for cervical cancer. The dissemination of this test contributed to reductions of the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer worldwide. In Korea, regular health check-ups for industrial workers and their family members were introduced in 1988 and were performed as part of the National Cancer Screening Program in 1999.

Background: Intubation using direct laryngoscopy is a risky and painful procedure that is associated with undesirable hemodynamic changes such as tachycardia, hypertension, and arrhythmia. Recently, intravenous oxycodone was introduced and used for the control of acute postoperative pain and to attenuate intubation-related hemodynamic responses (IRHRs), but there is insufficient information regarding its proper dosage. We investigated the attenuating effects of different doses of oxycodone and fentanyl on IRHRs.

Background: Spontaneous isolated posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) dissection has been reported more frequently since high-resolution vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging (HR vw-MRI) was introduced to the field. The intimal flap or double lumen, which is commonly reported to be a direct sign of the dissection, is not easily detectable on HR vw-MRI because the size of the PICA is very small and tortuous.
Case Presentation: Two patients with posterior circulation ischemic stroke due to spontaneous isolated PICA dissection underwent HR vw-MRI.

The histological features of thrombus in stroke patients with cancer are not well known. Using immunohistochemical staining of thrombi retrieved during mechanical thrombectomy in stroke patients, thrombus compositions were compared between 16 patients with active cancer, 16 patients with inactive cancer, and 16 patients without any history of cancer. The active cancer group showed higher platelet and lower erythrocyte fractions than the inactive cancer or the control group.

The aim of the present study was to elucidate the diagnostic and prognostic implications of parafibromin immunohistochemistry (IHC) in parathyroid carcinoma (PC). We performed a meta-analysis to examine the rate of loss of parafibromin expression from 18 eligible studies. In addition, a diagnostic test accuracy review was conducted to investigate the diagnostic role of parafibromin in PC.

Hepatic fibrosis results from chronic liver injury and inflammatory responses. Sestrin 2 (Sesn2), an evolutionarily conserved antioxidant enzyme, reduces the severities of acute hepatitis and metabolic liver diseases. However, the role of Sesn2 in the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis remains obscure.
