Immunophenotypic analysis on circulating T cells for early diagnosis of lung cancer.

Biomark Res

Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Chonnam National University Medical School, Hwasunup, Jeollanamdo, 58128, Republic of Korea.

The immune system continuously interacts with tumors, possibly leading to systemic alterations in circulating immune cells. However, the potential of these cancer-associated changes for diagnostic purposes remains poorly explored. To investigate this, we conducted a comprehensive flow cytometric analysis of 452 peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples from 206 non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, 100 small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients, 94 healthy individuals, and 52 benign lung disease (BLD) patients.

Purpose: To compare graft remodeling, as measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and clinical outcomes between patients who underwent isolated anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) versus combined anterior cruciate ligament and anterolateral ligament reconstruction (ACLR + ALLR).

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on patients who underwent primary ACLR with quadruple hamstring grafts between January 2019 and March 2022, with a minimum follow-up period of 2 years. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the addition of ALLR with tibialis anterior allografts: an isolated ACLR group and an ACLR + ALLR group.

Resuscitation in Paediatric Septic Shock Using Vitamin C and Hydrocortisone (RESPOND): The RESPOND Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol.

Pediatr Crit Care Med

December 2024

Children's Intensive Care Research Program, Child Health Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD, Australia.

Objectives: Pediatric sepsis results in significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. There is an urgent need to investigate adjunctive therapies that can be administered early. We hypothesize that using vitamin C combined with hydrocortisone increases survival free of inotropes/vasopressors support until day 7 compared with standard care.

Dual-Mechanism mRNA Delivery via Fluorinated-Sorbitol Polyplexes: Enhancing Cellular Uptake and Endosomal Escape for COVID-19 Vaccination.

Adv Healthc Mater

December 2024

Department of Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BMSGP), Chonnam National University Medical School, 322 Seoyang-ro, Hwasun, 58128, Republic of Korea.

Advancements in mRNA delivery nanoparticles have significantly improved the potential for treating challenging diseases. Due to the inherent immunogenicity and rapid degradation of mRNA, specialized nanoparticles are required for efficient intracellular uptake, endosomal escape, and protection from lysosomal degradation. Although current methods enable transgene expression but achieving a balance between efficiency and toxicity remains challenging.

To evaluate the efficacy of human placental extract (HPE) eye drops compared to that of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and human peripheral blood serum (HPBS) eye drops in a mouse model of experimental dry eye (EDE) and corneal alkali burns. EDE and alkali burn models were induced in C57BL/6 mice using desiccating stress and NaOH, respectively. In both the EDE and alkali burn models, treatment groups received CMC, HPBS, or HPE eye drops.

Background: Complete revascularization has demonstrated better outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and multivessel disease. However, in the case of left main (LM) culprit lesion AMI with multivessel disease, there is limited evidence to suggest that complete revascularization is better.

Methods: We reviewed 16,831 patients in the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry who were treated from July 2016 to June 2020, and 399 patients were enrolled with LM culprit lesion AMI treated with percutaneous coronary intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • - Patients with advanced/metastatic urothelial carcinoma who previously responded to or maintained stable disease with pembrolizumab immunotherapy may benefit from retreatment after disease progression, based on a post hoc analysis involving 49 patients from earlier clinical trials.
  • - The study found that 41% of these patients achieved an objective response following retreatment, with a notable percentage having had a complete response during the initial treatment, and the median duration of the response was around 14 months.
  • - Additionally, the retreatment led to manageable adverse effects, with only 45% experiencing treatment-related events, indicating that pembrolizumab retreatment is a viable and relatively safe option for select patients.

The α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), an ionophore, has been suggested to signal through metabotropic pathways and interact with other receptor families, such as dopamine receptors. In this study, the interaction between α4β2 nAChR and dopamine receptors was investigated through in vivo and in vitro studies. Nicotine exposure in adolescent rats is known to induce a sustained increase in nicotine's rewarding effects which was assessed by conditioned place preference (CPP) assay.

Immunotherapy with checkpoint blockade has shown remarkable efficacy in many patients with a variety of different types of cancer. However, the majority of patients with cancer have yet to benefit from this revolutionary therapy. Studies have shown that checkpoint blockade works best against immune-inflamed tumors characterized by the presence of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs).

Inflammatory disorders encompass a range of conditions, including osteoarthritis (OA), characterized by the body's heightened immune response to diverse stimuli. OA is a prevalent degenerative joint disease characterized by the progressive deterioration of joint cartilage and subchondral bone, leading to pain, limited mobility, and physical disability. Synovitis, the inflammation of the synovial membrane, is increasingly recognized as a critical factor in OA pathogenesis and progression.

December 2024

College of Pharmacy and Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chonnam National University, Gwangju, Republic of Korea.

Bacterial efflux pumps play important roles in the antibiotic resistance and excretion of virulence factors. We previously characterized that TolCV1, a component of efflux pumps, plays critical roles in resistance to antibiotics and bile and also RtxA1 toxin secretion of . In this context, we speculated that TolCV1 blockers would have a dual effect of enhancing susceptibility to antibiotics and suppressing virulence of .
