BMC Med Inform Decis Mak

January 2025

Department of Nutritional and Metabolic Psychiatry, The Affiliated Brain Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University, No. 36 Fangcun Mingxin Road, Liwan District, Guangzhou, 510370, China.

Background: The practical application of infectious disease emergency plans in mental health institutions during the ongoing pandemic has revealed significant shortcomings. These manifest as chaotic management of mental health care, a lack of hospital infection prevention and control (IPC) knowledge among medical staff, and unskilled practical operation. These factors result in suboptimal decision-making and emergency response execution.

Background: Hospital-acquired pneumonia is one of the most important causes of recurrent illness, disease progression, and even death during hospitalization. Patients with schizophrenia have the special characteristics of their disease, and at the same time, the occurrence of hospital-acquired pneumonia is more common among patients with schizophrenia due to the prolonged stay in closed wards, accompanied by various factors such as age, gender, and nutritional status.

Methods: The PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and China Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) databases were searched with a timeframe of build to February 2024 to collect studies on factors influencing hospital-acquired pneumonia in patients with schizophrenia.

Background: Research from observational studies has demonstrated a link between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Uncertainty surrounds the exact genetic cause of AD and coronary heart disease, particularly unstable angina (UA). Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was used to examine the causal genetic link between AD and UA to evaluate the impact of AD on UA.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study reviewed the effectiveness and safety of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) for treating schizophrenia, finding it does not significantly reduce psychotic symptoms compared to sham treatment.
  • - Three randomized clinical trials (RCTs) with 80 patients were analyzed, revealing that while dTMS didn’t improve overall psychopathology, it possibly enhanced some aspects of executive function.
  • - The review indicated moderate dropout rates (16.7% to 44.4%) and some reported side effects, like tingling and discomfort, highlighting the need for more extensive RCTs to explore dTMS's impact on schizophrenia further.

Article Synopsis
  • Childhood trauma significantly contributes to emotional distress, particularly anxiety and depression, among college students.
  • This study analyzed data from 2307 Chinese college students and found that a strong sense of coherence (SOC) can lessen the negative impact of childhood trauma on emotional distress.
  • Female students generally had higher SOC and lower anxiety/depression rates, despite experiencing more childhood trauma, indicating that SOC plays a crucial role in coping with these experiences.

Significance: Early diagnosis of depression is crucial for effective treatment. Our study utilizes functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and machine learning to accurately classify mild and severe depression, providing an objective auxiliary diagnostic tool for mental health workers.

Aim: Develop prediction models to distinguish between severe and mild depression using fNIRS data.

Background: Few studies have focused on functional impairment in depressed patients during symptomatic remission. The exact relationship between cognitive performance and functional outcomes of patients with Major depressive disorder (MDD) remains unclear.

Methods: Participants diagnosed with MDD were included and interviewed at both baseline and follow-up.

Seasonal patterns (SP) exert a notable influence on the course and prognosis of patients with affective disorders, serving as a specifier in diagnosis. However, there is limited exploration of seasonality among psychotic patients, and the distinctions in seasonality among psychiatric patients remain unclear. In this study, we enrolled 198 psychiatric patients with anxiety and depressive disorders (A&D), bipolar disorder (BD), and schizophrenia (SZ), as well as healthy college students.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and cognitive impairment (CI) in older adults in the U.S., highlighting gaps in existing research on how diet affects inflammation and brain health.
  • Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2011-2014, researchers assessed dietary intake and cognitive function through specific tests and found that higher DII scores were linked to poorer cognitive performance.
  • The results revealed a significant positive correlation between DII and cognitive impairment, with the highest DII quartile showing increased odds of low performance on cognitive tests, particularly the AFT and DSST.

Functional molecules have been attracting increasing attention in environmental and physiological studies. In particular, folic acid (FA) could be considered a key factor in estimating, adjusting, and making decisions in the treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders. It promotes the general significance and conceptual for considering FA molecular scientific research detections, which implies related advancement in both of biological structure and detection methods.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are commonly reported comorbidities. Adult GAD patients with comorbid ADHD are often underdiagnosed and undertreated. To explore the clinical value of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) data for assisting in the accurate diagnosis of ADHD in individuals with GAD, haemoglobin (HbO) concentration changes in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) were detected via fNIRS in 49 patients with both GAD and ADHD, 46 patients with GAD, and 34 healthy controls (HCs) during a verbal fluency task (VFT) and a GO/NOGO task.

Background: Based on the high prevalence and fatality rates associated with severe community-acquired pneumonia (SCAP), this study endeavored to construct an innovative nomogram for early identification of individuals at high risk of all-cause death within a 30-day period among SCAP patients receiving intensive care units (ICU) treatment.

Methods: In this single-center, retrospective study, 718 SCAP patients were screened from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database for the development of a predictive model. A total of 97 patients eligible for inclusion were included from Chongqing General Hospital, China between January 2020 and July 2023 for external validation.
