In MRI the transverse relaxation rate, R = 1/T shows dependence on the orientation of ordered tissue relative to the main magnetic field. In previous studies, orientation effects of R relaxation in the mature brain's white matter have been found to be described by a susceptibility-based model of diffusion through local magnetic field inhomogeneities created by the diamagnetic myelin sheaths. Orientation effects in human newborn white matter have not yet been investigated.

The clinical methods to detect RNA viruses and disease-related RNAs suffer from time-consuming processes, high false-positive rates, or limited sensitivity. Here, we propose a strategy for rapid RNA detection through intra-enzyme chain replacement-mediated Cas13a cascade cyclic reaction without target amplification. A hairpin RNA mediator (a cleavage substrate for target-activated Cas13a) and a guiding RNA recognized by the cleavage product through intra-enzyme chain replacement were designed and optimized.

Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping of Venous Vessels in Neonates with Perinatal Asphyxia.

AJNR Am J Neuroradiol

July 2021

From the Division of Neurology (A.M.W., A.R.).

Background And Purpose: Cerebral venous oxygen saturation can be used as an indirect measure of brain health, yet it often requires either an invasive procedure or a noninvasive technique with poor sensitivity. We aimed to test whether cerebral venous oxygen saturation could be measured using quantitative susceptibility mapping, an MR imaging technique, in 3 distinct groups: healthy term neonates, injured term neonates, and preterm neonates.

Materials And Methods: We acquired multiecho gradient-echo MR imaging data in 16 neonates with perinatal asphyxia and moderate or severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (8 term age: average, 40.

Key Laboratory of Precision Scientific Instrumentation of Anhui Higher Education Institutes, Department of Precision Machinery and Precision Instrumentation, University of Science and Technology of China, 96 Jinzhai Road, Hefei, 230027, Anhui, China.

While many clinical laboratory tests are now highly automated, body fluid cell counting, particularly in low-cellularity samples such as cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), is often performed manually. Here, we report a simple, cost-effective method to obtain white and red blood cell counts from human body fluids such as CSF. The method consists of a compact, automated, and low-cost fluorescence microscope system, coupled to a sample chamber containing all of the necessary reagents in dry form to stain and prepare the sample.

Background: Existing evidence has shown that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can undergo malignant transformation, which is a serious limitation of MSC-based therapies. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor malignant transformation of MSCs via a noninvasive imaging method. Although reporter gene-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been successfully applied to longitudinally monitor MSCs, this technique cannot distinguish the cells before and after malignant transformation.

October 2021

Department of Radiology, Chongqing Medical University, Children's Hospital, Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Child Development and Disorders, Chongqing International Science and Technology Cooperation Center for Child Development and Disorders and Key Laboratory of Pediatrics in Chongqing, Chongqing 400014, China.

Background: Low dose CT has become a promising examination method for the diagnosis of Congenital heart disease (CHD) in children because it has a low radiation dose, but it has not been widely accepted as an alternative to standard-dose CT in clinical applications due to concerns about image quality. Therefore, we suggest that the diagnostic accuracy, image quality, and radiation dose of low-dose CT for CHD in children should be fully explored through a metaanalysis of existing studies.

Methods: A comprehensive search was performed to identify relevant English and Chinese articles (from inception to May 2019).

BMP2 Is Related to Hirschsprung's Disease and Required for Enteric Nervous System Development.

Front Cell Neurosci

December 2019

Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Child Development and Disorders, Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, China.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is derived from neural crest cells (NCCs). Defects in ENS NCCs colonizing in the intestines lead to an absence of enteric ganglia in the colon and results in Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR). Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) play diverse roles in the proliferation, migration and survival of ENS NCCs; however, whether BMPs are involved in HSCR and the underlying mechanism remains largely unknown.
