Intra-abdominal venous malformations and inferior vena cava aneurysms are rare and difficult to diagnose because of their nonspecific clinical symptoms. These vascular anomalies are important entities due to the risk of thrombosis or rupture. According to the classification of International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies, venous malformations are classified as low-flow vascular anomalies, showing absence of arterial and early venous enhancement and slow gradual filling with contrast on delayed venous imaging.

In the surgical oncology field, the change from a past radical surgery to an organ preserving surgery is a big trend. In muscle-invasive bladder cancer treatment, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by radical cystectomy (RC) is the standard of care for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) patients eligible for cisplatin. There is a growing interest in bladder preserving strategies after NAC because good oncologic outcome has been reported for pathologic complete response (pCR) patients after NAC, and many studies have continued to discuss whether bladder preservation treatment is possible for these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) compared to non-operative treatment in patients with thoracic trauma, specifically those with flail chest.
  • A total of 166 patients were analyzed; 31.3% underwent surgical treatment, and while the surgical group had a slightly shorter hospital stay and lower pneumonia rates, these differences were not statistically significant.
  • The findings suggest that while SSRF might lead to some benefits like reduced hospital stay and lower pneumonia incidence, overall mortality rates did not differ significantly between surgical and non-surgical groups.

Background Homeostasis of the vessel wall is cooperatively maintained by endothelial cells (ECs), smooth muscle cells, and adventitial fibroblasts. The genetic deletion of fibulin-4 () in smooth muscle cells () leads to the formation of thoracic aortic aneurysms with the disruption of elastic fibers. Although is expressed in the entire vessel wall, its function in ECs and relevance to the maintenance of valvulo-arterial integrity are not fully understood.
