Combination therapy with WEE1 inhibition and trifluridine/tipiracil against esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Despite advanced therapeutics, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains one of the deadliest cancers. Here, we propose a novel therapeutic strategy based on synthetic lethality combining trifluridine/tipiracil and MK1775 (WEE1 inhibitor) as a treatment for ESCC. This study demonstrates that trifluridine induces single-strand DNA damage in ESCC cells, as evidenced by phosphorylated replication protein 32.

Surveillance and treatment of primary hepatocellular carcinoma (aka. STOP HCC): protocol for a prospective cohort study of high-risk patients for HCC using GALAD-score.

Background: Vietnam and Saudi Arabia have high disease burden of primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Early detection in asymptomatic patients at risk for HCC is a strategy to improve survival outcomes in HCC management. GALAD score, a serum-based panel, has demonstrated promising clinical utility in HCC management.

Osseointegrability of 3D-printed porous titanium alloy implant on tibial shaft bone defect in rabbit model.

Previous studies have demonstrated the ability of osseointegration of porous titanium implants in cancellous bone. Our study was designed to (i) investigate the ability of bone ingrowth into 3D-printed porous titanium alloy implant on the cortical bone of rabbits using CT-scan and histology, and (ii) to identify the consistency of the radiology information between clinical Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and Micro Computed Tomography (μCT) in the evaluation of bone ingrowth. The porous titanium alloy implants were 3D-printed employing the Electron Beam Melting (EBM) technology with an intended pore size of 600 μm and porosity of approximately 50 percent.

Value of ultrasound-guided synovial biopsy for the diagnosis of infectious arthritis.

Objectives: To determine the value of ultrasound (US)-guided synovial biopsy for the diagnosis of infectious arthritis that could not be detected by other modalities.

Material And Methods: This descriptive study was conducted among 37 patients with arthritis (3 with shoulder arthritis, 2 with elbow arthritis, 7 with wrist arthritis, 15 with hip arthritis, 4 with knee arthritis, and 5 with ankle arthritis) who underwent US-guided synovial biopsy at Hanoi Medical University Hospital for the diagnosis of infec-tious arthritis that could not be detected by infection laboratory tests, imaging, and/or joint fluid culture. The results of US-guided synovial biopsy were positive for infectious arthritis when those of pathologi-cal analyses, bacterial cultures, and/or polymerase chain reaction test for tuberculosis were positive.

Predictive value of ACE I/D genetic polymorphism for 12-month all-cause mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

The prognostic role of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) insertion/deletion (I/D) genetic polymorphism in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is controversial and inconsistent across various study populations. This study evaluated the predictive validity of the ACE I/D variant based on 12-month all-cause mortality in Vietnamese patients after AMI. This was an observational, prospective study conducted among AMI patients at Cho Ray Hospital between January 2020 and September 2021.

Risk factors for cannula-associated arterial thrombosis following extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support: a retrospective study.

Background: Hemostatic dysfunction during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) due to blood-circuit interaction and the consequences of shear stress imposed by flow rates lead to rapid coagulation cascade and thrombus formation in the ECMO system and blood vessels. We aimed to identify the incidence and risk factors for cannula-associated arterial thrombosis (CaAT) post-decannulation.

Methods: A retrospective study of patients undergoing arterial cannula removal following ECMO was performed.

The Efficacy of Transplanting Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cell Sheets in the Treatment of Myocardial Infarction in Mice.

The transplantation of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) sheets derived from human umbilical cords (hUCs) was investigated in this study as a potential application in treating myocardial infarction (MI). Two groups of hUC-MSC sheets were formed by populating LunaGel, which are 3D scaffolds of photo-crosslinkable gelatin-based hydrogel with two different cell densities. An MI model was created by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery of healthy BALB/c mice.

Locked thumb metacarpophalangeal joint due to sesamoid bone entrapment: A case report and review of literature.

Locked thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint has been known as a relatively rare condition. We present a case of a 25-year-old male presented with a traumatic locked thumb MCP joint of the right hand. Clinical presentation showed the joint was in a hyperextention position and resistant to active flexion and extension.

Validation of a new simple scoring system to predict spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in patients with cirrhosis and ascites.

Background: Recently, a simple scoring system named the Mansoura scoring system was developed to predict spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in patients with cirrhosis and ascites. However, the efficacy of this newly developed system has not been extensively investigated. We aimed to validate a new simple scoring system for the rapid diagnosis or exclusion of SBP without paracentesis.

Reduced Sensitivity to Background Reward Underlies Apathy After Traumatic Brain Injury: Insights From an Ecological Foraging Framework.

Background: Altered reward processing is increasingly recognised as a crucial mechanism underpinning apathy in many brain disorders. However despite its clinical relevance, little is known about the mechanisms of apathy following moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). In real-life situations, reward representations encompass both foreground (gains from current activity) and background (potential gains from the broader environment) elements.

Association between early blood urea nitrogen-to-albumin ratio and one-year post-hospital mortality in critically ill surgical patients: a propensity score-matched study.

Background: Blood urea nitrogen to albumin ratio (BAR) is increasingly recognized as an early predictor for short-term outcomes in critically ill patients, but the association of BAR with long-term outcomes in critically ill surgical patients remains underexplored.

Methods: We enrolled consecutive patients who were admitted to surgical intensive care units (ICUs) at Taichung Veterans General Hospital between 2015 and 2020, and the dates of death were retrieved from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. In addition to Cox regression, we also used propensity score matching to determine the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for one-year post-hospital mortality of the variables.

Surgical management of descending necrotizing mediastinitis: strategy for thoracic interference.

Background: The present descriptive study shares the overall experience of treating all these patients where different surgical process was adopted depending on the treatment required after carefully evaluating the risk factors and comorbidities.

Methods: The present study was conducted at the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Choray Hospital, Vietnam between the period of 2010 to 2020. We have treated 95 patients altogether in this duration.

First-line atezolizumab monotherapy versus single-agent chemotherapy in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer ineligible for treatment with a platinum-containing regimen (IPSOS): a phase 3, global, multicentre, open-label, randomised controlled study.

Background: Despite immunotherapy advancements for patients with advanced or metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), pivotal first-line trials were limited to patients with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) 0-1 and a median age of 65 years or younger. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of first-line atezolizumab monotherapy with single-agent chemotherapy in patients ineligible for platinum-based chemotherapy.

Methods: This trial was a phase 3, open-label, randomised controlled study conducted at 91 sites in 23 countries across Asia, Europe, North America, and South America.

Economic Analysis of a Ketoanalogue-supplemented Very Low-protein Diet in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease in Vietnam.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to estimate the cost-effectiveness of a very low-protein diet (VLPD) supplemented with ketoanalogues of essential amino acids compared with a conventional low-protein diet (LPD) in Vietnam.

Methods: The study was conducted from payer (base case), patient, and societal perspectives. A Markov model simulated costs and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) for patients with chronic kidney disease stage 4 or 5 (CKD4+) who were followed up during their lifetimes.

Reversible leukoencephalopathy associated with organotin poisoning.

Introduction: Organotin compounds are widely used in the plastic industry. We demonstrate the role of brain magnetic resonance imaging in a patient with leukoencephalopathy.

Clinical Course: A 38-year-old man who worked with trimethyltin and dimethyltin in a polyvinyl chloride factory reported a two-week progression of impaired memory, loss of balance, apathy, tinnitus, scaly darkened skin, and psychomotor slowing that rendered him unable to continue his daily activities.

Rare Complication of Strongyloidiasis in Vietnam: A Case of Venous Thromboembolism and Duodenal Obstruction.

Strongyloidiasis, a chronic helminth infection caused by the parasitic nematode , has various clinical manifestations. Although rare, duodenal obstructions and venous thromboembolism are possible complications of strongyloidiasis. This paper presents the case of a 47-year-old Vietnamese male with a history of right lower limb edema, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort lasting for four months.

Prediction of obstructive coronary artery disease in patients undergoing heart valve surgery: A cross-sectional study in a tertiary care hospital.

Estimating the probability of obstructive coronary artery disease in patients undergoing noncoronary cardiac surgery should be considered compulsory. Our study sought to evaluate the prevalence of obstructive coronary artery disease in patients undergoing valvular heart surgery and to utilize predictive methodology of concomitant obstructive coronary artery disease in these patients. The retrospective study cohort was derived from a tertiary care hospital registry of patients undergoing coronary angiogram prior to valvular heart operations.

Endovascular management of massive hemoptysis due to pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm in a COVID-19 patient in Vietnam: A case report.

Pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm with massive hemoptysis is extremely rare in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-induced pneumonia, especially in its late stage. We report a case who presented with massive hemoptysis and pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm without pulmonary thromboembolism in their ninth week of COVID-19 infection, which was treated by endovascular embolization. The endovascular intervention was technically and clinically successful, with complete hemoptysis cessation after the procedure.

Factors associated with successful publication for systematic review protocol registration: an analysis of 397 registered protocols.

Background: Meta-analyses are on top of the evidence-based medicine pyramid, yet many of them are not completed after they are begun. Many factors impacting the publication of meta-analysis works have been discussed, and their association with publication likelihood has been investigated. These factors include the type of systematic review, journal metrics, h-index of the corresponding author, country of the corresponding author, funding sources, and duration of publication.
