A novel scoring system for the prediction of disease severity in STEC-HUS.

Background: Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli-associated hemolytic uremic syndrome (STEC-HUS) is a life-threatening condition complicated by acute kidney injury, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and central nervous system disorders. The early identification of high-risk patients is required to facilitate timely and appropriate treatment.

Methods: The medical records of patients with STEC-HUS treated at 11 hospitals in Hokkaido, Japan, were reviewed retrospectively.

Functional Analysis of a Novel Variant Identified in a Patient With MODY1.

Context: HNF4A-maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY1) is a relatively rare subtype of monogenic diabetes caused by loss of function of the gene, which encodes the transcription factor HNF4α. HNF4α is known to form heterodimers, and the various combinations of isoforms that make up these heterodimers have been reported to result in a diversity of targeted genes. However, the function of individual HNF4α variant isoforms and the heterodimers comprising both wild-type (WT) and variant HNF4α have not yet been assessed.

Background: Gastric anisakiasis typically causes severe abdominal symptoms; however, we incidentally detected asymptomatic gastric anisakiasis cases during esophagogastroduodenoscopy. The factors associated with developing acute abdominal symptoms induced by gastric anisakiasis remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the clinical factors associated with abdominal symptoms of gastric anisakiasis by comparing symptomatic and asymptomatic cases.

[A Long-Term Survival Case of Multiple Liver Metastases from Colon Cancer Treated with Intensive Multimodality Therapy].

A 60-year-old man diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer was admitted to our hospital. A CT scan revealed multiple liver metastases. The patient was administered 15 courses of FOLFIRI chemotherapy and 15 courses of FOLFIRI plus Cmab chemotherapy.

Risk factors of lower extremity injuries in youth athletes.

Objective: Lower extremity sports injuries frequently occur during an individual's growth period. The object of the current study was to analyse the risk factors for lower extremity sports injuries for youth athletes. The secondary objective was to clarify the factors related to new injuries after a lower extremity injury.

Late recurrence in patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer after 5-year cancer-free periods.

Objectives: There is no consensus about the follow-up schedule after 5-year cancer-free periods. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the risk factors for the recurrence in patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer who remained cancer free for more than 5 years.

Meckel's diverticulum with intraperitoneal hemorrhage in a child detected with screening laparoscopy: a case report.

Background: The most common presentation of symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum (MD) are intestinal obstruction, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and inflammation of the MD with or without perforation. Intraperitoneal hemorrhage because of MD is extremely rare. We report a case of MD with intraperitoneal hemorrhage in a child detected with screening laparoscopy.

Lateral lymph node recurrence of rectal cancer with a pathological complete response to chemotherapy confirmed by laparoscopic lateral lymph node dissection: A case report.

Lateral lymph node (LLN) metastasis is one of the forms of local recurrence after surgery for lower rectal cancer. We here present a case of LLN recurrence of rectal cancer that was shown by laparoscopic lateral lymph node dissection (LLND) to have a complete pathological response to chemotherapy. A 58-year-old man underwent open low anterior resection for lower rectal cancer.

Early adverse events after the first administration of zoledronic acid in Japanese patients with osteoporosis.

Introduction: The occurrence of early adverse events and the factors associated with these events in zoledronic acid-treated Japanese patients with osteoporosis were investigated.
