Leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B4 (LILRB4) significantly impacts immune regulation and the pathogenesis and progression of various cancers. This review discusses LILRB4's structural attributes, expression patterns in immune cells, and molecular mechanisms in modulating immune responses. We describe the influence of LILRB4 on T cells, dendritic cells, NK cells, and macrophages, and its dual role in stimulating and suppressing immune activities.

Effects of resveratrol on tolerance to ischemia/reperfusion injury in aged male mice: Role of autophagy and apoptosis.

Aged myocardium is more susceptible to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Autophagy and apoptosis play important roles in cardiac I/R injury. However, whether resveratrol can reduce the I/R vulnerability of aged myocardium by regulating apoptosis and autophagy remains unclear.

One-step hexaplex immunoassays by on-line paper substrate-based electrospray ionization mass spectrometry for combined cancer biomarker screening.

Mass spectrometry (MS) is attractive as a multiplexed immunoassay readout benefiting from its high sensitivity, speed and mass resolution. Here, a simple paper-based hexaplex immunoassay with an on-line MS readout was proposed, using functionalized paper as the immune substrates, along with rhodamine-based mass tags assembled on gold nanoparticles prepared as the mass probes (MPs). Simultaneous immune capture and labeling were conducted in one step on paper substrates in 96-well plates with a high throughput within 30 minutes, and the on-line efficient dissociation of the mass tags highly facilitated the hexaplex readout of the immune signals by a newly established on-line paper substrate-based electrospray ionization-MS setup.

Methods and Results We used data from REACTION (Risk Evaluation of Cancers in Chinese Diabetic Individuals: A Longitudinal Study), which recruited a total of 259 657 community-dwelling adults aged 40 years or older from 25 centers across mainland China between 2011 and 2012.

It often affects the toenail and is characterized by an opaque, yellow-brownish nail plate that is distorted, grossly thickened, elongated, and partly curved resembling a ram's horn. Tuberous sclerosis complex is a multisystem disorder associated with high rates of mental retardation, autism, cognitive impairment, behavioral problems, or seizures.

Acute localized exanthematous pustulosis is a localized variant of acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, which is characterized by the eruption of multiple scattered pustules following drug administration. A 72-year-old woman presented with multiple erythematous pustules on her face, which had appeared two days after using cefoperazone and sodium sulbactam. Histopathological findings showed subcorneal pustules and mixed inflammatory cell infiltration in the dermis.

Primary sarcomatoid carcinoma of the jejunum with massive intra-abdominal hemorrhage: A case report and review of the literature.

Primary sarcomatoid carcinoma of the jejunum is an extremely rare condition, with only 16 cases reported in the literature to date. We herein report an additional case of a giant sarcomatoid carcinoma of the jejunum in a 62-year-old male patient, presenting as massive intra-abdominal hemorrhage. During emergency laparotomy, ~5 litres of bloody ascites was found in the peritoneal cavity and the tumor was located in the proximal jejunum.

Association between HRH4 polymorphisms and ankylosing spondylitis susceptibility.

Target: The purpose of the study was to investigate the association between the histamine H4 receptor (HRH4) polymorphisms and the susceptibility to ankylosing spondylitis (AS).

Methods: Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was used to analyze the HRH4 rs8088140 and rs657132 polymorphisms. Linkage disequilibrium and haplotype analyses were conducted with Haploview software.

Background: NY-ESO-1 antibody is one of the cancer-related antibodies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the diagnostic role of the NY-ESO-1 humoral immune response in small cell lung cancer (SCLC).

Methods: We recombined the recombinant protein of NY-ESO-1 antibody and NSE, analyzed them by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and then established the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve to estimate the diagnostic value of NY-ESO-1 antibody, NSE and their combinations.

An epidemiological study of risk factors of thyroid nodule and goiter in Chinese women.

Thyroid nodule (TN) and goiter are two common disorders of the thyroid. Despite their benign nature, both conditions are associated with multiple pathologic conditions including thyroiditis, endocrine dysregulation, and autoimmune disease. In this study we conducted a large-scale epidemiological study in Chinese women to identify risk factors implicated in the pathogenesis of TN and goiter.

High expression of CD39/ENTPD1 in malignant epithelial cells of human rectal adenocarcinoma.

The ectonucleotidase CD39 is pivotal in the conversion of immunostimulatory adenosine triphosphate (ATP) into immunosuppressive adenosine which potently inhibits host immune responses against cancer. This study investigated the expression level and prognostic significance of CD39 in human rectal adenocarcinoma. Our data demonstrated that CD39 staining strongly marked malignant epithelial cells where the protein and messenger RNA (mRNA) expression levels of CD39 were significantly increased compared with paracancerous controls.

NDM-1 encoded by a pNDM-BJ01-like plasmid p3SP-NDM in clinical Enterobacter aerogenes.

A carbapenem-nonsusceptible Enterobacter aerogenes strain named 3-SP was isolated from a human case of pneumonia in a Chinese teaching hospital. NDM-1 carbapenemase is produced by a pNDM-BJ01-like conjugative plasmid designated p3SP-NDM to account for carbapenem resistance of 3-SP. p3SP-NDM was fully sequenced and compared with all publically available pNDM-BJ01-like plasmids.

Mer receptor tyrosine kinase is frequently overexpressed in human non-small cell lung cancer, confirming resistance to erlotinib.

Mer is a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) with oncogenic properties that is often overexpressed or activated in various malignancies. Using both immunohistochemistry and microarray analyses, we demonstrated that Mer was overexpressed in both tumoral and stromal compartments of about 70% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) samples relative to surrounding normal lung tissue. This was validated in freshly harvested NSCLC samples; however, no associations were found between Mer expression and patient features.

Background: A revised classification of chronic kidney disease (CKD) was proposed by the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) in 2012. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) was considered as one of the most promising biomarkers in clinical nephrology. The aim of this study was to examine the level of NGAL in patients with different impairment of GFR based on the new classification, and to evaluate whether NGAL in serum or urine was associated with different risk categories in CKD patients.
