Background: Whether extended lymphadenectomy for right colon cancer leads to increased perioperative complications or improves survival is still controversial. This trial aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of complete mesocolic excision (CME) versus D2 dissection in laparoscopic right hemicolectomy for patients with right colon cancer. This article reports the early safety results from the trial.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 is currently of global concern. Cancer patients are advised to stay at home in case of potential infection, which may cause delays of routine diagnosis and necessary treatment. How colorectal surgeons should manage this during the epidemic remains a big challenge.

Background: Lymph node metastasis (LNM) remains a major obstacle to treat colorectal cancer (CRC). Increasing evidences have suggested that bufadienolides contain several fractions displaying antitumor activity and may be applied in lymphatic chemotherapy. However, effects of the highly efficient and lowly toxic (HELT) bufadienolides on CRC in lymphatic chemotherapy have not been reported.

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (HvKP) is hypermucoviscous organism, carrying genes of rmpA and aerobactin, causing serious community-acquired infection and metastatically spread in young healthy hosts. Neutrophils play an important role during innate immune response against bacterial infection by phagocytosis and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Whether neutrophils can effectively defend against HvKP remains unclear.

Objective: Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKP) has been characterized as the major pathogen associated with the development of liver abscesses. Although the prevalence of K. pneumoniae in liver abscesses in Chinese patients is on the rise, methods for the early laboratory identification and recognition of hvKP are lacking, and hvKP detection and surveillance are thus limited.

Background: Most patients with displaced femoral neck fractures are treated by THA and hemiarthroplasty, but it remains uncertain which if either is associated with better function and lower risks of complications.

Questions/purposes: We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to determine whether THA was associated with lower rates of reoperations, mortality, complications, and better function compared with hemiarthroplasty.

Methods: We searched the PubMed, Embase, Chinese Biomedicine Literature, and Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials databases and identified 12 RCTs (including a total of 1320 patients) for meta-analysis.

Objectives: To investigate clinical effects and manual operational point of Bryan cervical disc prosthesis in Asian, to observe the stability and range of movement (ROM) postoperatively.

Methods: Bryan disc prosthesis replacement applied in 8 cases (10 levels) of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). Clinical (JOA grade and Odom's scale) and radiological (X-ray of bending, extending; left and right bending position) follow-up was performed 3 months postoperatively, (mean follow-up 3.

Objective: The anterior cervical autograft or allograft interbody fusion had become an accepted fusion technique for treating patients with degenerative disorders of the cervical spine. In this retrospective review, a comparison of allograft and autograft of bone was presented.

Methods: A retrospective review of 103 patients who had undergone allograft fusion and 145 patients with autograft fusion between 1997 and 2003, was conducted.

Background: To investigate the relationship between expression of fragile histidine triad gene protein, Fhit, and clinicopathological characteristics of human lung cancer.

Methods: Fhit protein expression was detected in 92 cases of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human lung cancer by citrate-microwave-SP immunohistochemical method, of which 52 were non-small cell cancer (NSCLC) and 40 small cell cancer (SCLC). Its relationship to histological grade, lymph node metastasis and histological classification were analysed.

The objective of this study was to investigate the expression of the catalytic subunit of telomerase, telomerase reverse transcriptase (TRT), and the possible relationship between the TRT expression and poor healing or cancer transformation in radiation-induced chronic human skin ulcer. Rabbit antibody to human TRT and SP immunohistochemical method were used to detect TRT expression in 24 cases of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded chronic human skin ulcer tissues induced by radiation, 5 cases of normal skin, 2 of burned skin, and 8 of cancer. The positive rate of TRT expression in chronic radiation ulcers was 58.

Telomerase activity in radiation-induced chronic human skin ulcers.

J Environ Pathol Toxicol Oncol

February 1999

Department of Pathology, Chinese General Hospital of People's Liberation Army, Beijing, PR China.

An increasing activity of telomerase is considered to be a reliable molecular biological marker for malignancy. There is much research work on telomerase detection in malignant tumors, but no such investigation was carried out in chronic skin ulcers induced by radiation. We investigated the levels of telomerase activity in radiation-induced chronic human skin ulcers and the possible relationship between the enzyme and cancer transformation.
